Body Scrub

Lori shares how to make a two ingredient body scrub!

How to Make Your Own Body Scrub

During the pandemic, we haven’t been able to get out for massages, facials and spa treatments. The good news is you’ve probably saved a lot of money! On a recent get together, Lori shared with me her favorite body scrub. Oh and by the way, it’s homemade, super easy to make (only two ingredients) and feels amazing on your skin!

The Result

Body Scrub – Gift Jars

Lori gifted me a container of the scrub and I love it! My skin is so soft after each use; and as Lori states I don’t need to apply my lotion. That’s a big win in my book as it’s also a time saver! It smells great and works like a great exfoliant sloughing away the dry skin spots; or as Lori calls them “barnacles”.

SHOP THE INGREDIENTS

Cane Sugar and Coconut Oil…so easy for those of us who are challenged in the kitchen!

You might already have the ingredients in your house! I love this scrub so much and it’s super easy to make so I’m thinking it’s a great gift to make and have on hand…think thank you gifts, hostess gifts, stocking stuffers, etc. All you need to do is add a cute bow. You could even make some cute personalized labels to put on the jar!

Please let us know if you give this body scrub a try. We’d love to know what you think of it. Or if you have your own recipe (provided it’s not too complicated), we’d love to hear about it. Do you have a favorite exfoliant? Leave us a comment! We love to hear from you!

Sizzl’in Summer Styles

Stylish Monday and Linkup Party

Summers in Chicagoland can be a mixed bag of weather! Midwesterners laugh and say that if you don’t like the weather stick around; it will change in a few seconds. In general, it can be very hot and humid. Being an educator and having most of my summers off, my summer uniform tends to be a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. FTF did a previous post on wearing shorts over 50: click HERE. We also did a post on wearing the currently trendy bike shorts: click HERE.

This summer it has been mostly hot, which I love; and I’ve been more inclined to wear dresses, which is slightly out of my norm but so easy to style, super comfortable in the heat and cute for heading out with friends and loved ones on a social distancing basis.

Little White Dress

This little white dress can easily be dressed up as I’m wearing it; or down if you prefer a more casual look. I added my gold wedges and some fun summery statement jewelry. This dress is fully lined and is a decent length on me. The flutter sleeves and empire waist add some interest and detail! I choose to wear this when I was meeting my Chicago Midlife Blogging friends for a shopping and dinner date!

On My Right: Michelle of https://www.instagram.com/overfiftyandblessed/

Little Black Dress

This little black dress is also easy to dress up or down and add any pop of color for some interest! I wore this look on the day I trained the new teachers in my school district. It could be worn out with friends, date night, etc. Similar to the white dress, it’s easy to pull on, style and go. Due to the low square neckline, I opted to wear my bralette so that I wouldn’t have to wear a strapless bra. The puffy sleeves add some interest. The cut of both dresses is figure flattering!

Little Black Dress: Target
Jewelry: My Jewelry Armoire (Chico’s)
Peep Toe: My Closet

Leopard Print Dress

This leopard print dress was a huge hit! It has so much going for it. Similar to both previous dresses, you simply put it on add some accessories and go! I added neutral accessories but you could add any pop of color for some additional interest! I wore this dress out to drinks and to a shopping fundraiser. The material doesn’t wrinkle, which is a big winner in my book! All three dresses are from Target! Target has really upped their game! Each dress was under $30! Remember you don’t have to break the bank to be cute and on trend!

Striped Dress

Yellow and blue are two of my favorite colors to wear! Additionally, I love stripes so this dress called my name immediately. Tiered dresses are currently trending as well! If you’re an avid FTF follower, you’ll recall that I shared this dress on my blog post about lemon print summer styling: click HERE. Similar to the white dress, I like the flutter sleeves. Like all of the other dresses shared here, you can throw this dress on, accessorize and go! That’s styling made easy for sure! All of the dresses have a similar cut, which is figure flattering.

Striped Dress: Loft
Neon Yellow Sandals: Amazon
Lemon Earrings and Necklace: Cora’s Den

All four of these dresses have been great for bringing some “sizzl’in style” to my summer wardrobe but they’ll also transition into fall by adding jackets, cardigans and even wearing them over leggings and jeans! That will really be a big bang for my buck! Don’t forget to think about how to transition your pieces into several seasons!

Back Porch Make Over Part 1 of 2

Lori and I on Her Back Porch

Interior Design

Yes, you read that right! Lori reached out to me to help her decorate her back porch. Fun fact about me: My first major in college was interior decorating, which lasted all of about a year and half. I truly thought I would be learning to design and was surprised to find out how much drawing was involved. While I truly love interiors, I had no confidence that I would make it into the college of design after spending two years putting together a portfolio and knowing they took a very few number of students. In case you’re wondering, it turned out just fine. I landed in special education and elementary education, which still fulfills me to this day and is truly my passion. Additionally, it’s perfectly fine to have numerous passions!

FTF hopes you enjoy our vlog!  Technology isn’t our thing so our videos are pretty much the raw, unedited real deal!  Although I have to say, I think we’re getting a lot better! Hope you find the humor in our authentic selves!

Before Pictures

Lori’s porch is a good size and has lots of potential. It doesn’t look bad. We’re going to take good to great with some additional decor and plants.

Lori opted to keep her current furniture and cushions, which you can see are multi-colored stripes along with the navy lumbar pillows. Her wicker furniture is an indigo color.

Virtual Shopping

As mentioned in the video, Lori and I did all of our shopping on line while I was with her. All of the items she purchased came from the following: Grandin Road, Pottery Barn and Amazon. It’s super easy to work with Lori because she knows what she likes and is very decisive! We got together this past weekend and some items have already arrived. We hope you come back for Part 2 to see the finished makeover.

This is not a sponsored post and solely our own opinions.

Aerial Yoga in Trees

Feature a Friend:

Meet Holly of Aviana Yoga

Holly: Aviana Yoga

If you’ve been following Fashion Trends and Friends for some time, you are aware that I’ve been on a health and fitness journey for two years. Initially on my journey, I lost over 50 pounds. To read that blog: click HERE. Once I lost the weight, my goal shifted to fitness and finding fitness activities that I could actually go and do and be excited about doing. To read that blog: click HERE. The first class that I tried was aerial yoga and loved it from the start! Luckily, my gym offered classes once a week. Once I started taking the classes, I never stopped! Aerial yoga was something that I could definitely get excited to go and do each week. Then the pandemic came along this March and my gym closed down. WW (Weight Watchers) had to go to virtual meetings. During one of the weekly meetings, a member mentioned that there was an aerial yoga class being offered near by and was being offered outside in trees. As you can imagine, I looked it up immediately and have been able to attend classes all spring and summer outside in trees! FTF hopes you learn more about aerial yoga and enjoy my interview with Holly!

How Did You Get Interested and Started in Aerial Yoga?

Holly answered, “I found aerial yoga as a way to support my body in ways in which traditional mat yoga practices could not.  I come from a background of riding and massaging horses for a living, which led to my body sustaining some injuries which inhibited the progression of my mat yoga practice from expanding into inversions.  When I came across the aerial yoga hammock as an option to receive support while being able to invert, new doorways of possibility opened up for me.  At the time I discovered it, I had already branched into teaching Stand Up Paddleboard yoga so it seemed only natural to step further along the path of alternative yoga options as ways that I could help open new doorways in people’s mind to what is possible for them.”

Plow Pose: I’m in the purple hammock/silk.
My friend Diane is in the red hammock/silk. This was Diane’s first time doing yoga ever.
Handstand!
Diane and I after our session together! I love to bring friends so they can have the same amazing experience!

What Are the Benefits of Aerial Yoga?

According to Holly, the benefits include: “Healthy complexion, immune boosting, deep tissue muscle release, core strength, improved balance, and connection back to your inner child for FUN, playfulness and POSSIBILITY!  It is also very balancing to the nervous system.” I know that Holly had a hard time answering this question as there are countless benefits. She covers all of them in her book, which is mentioned below.

Aerial yoga has got you covered on all 4 of these!
Backbend Stretch

What Type of Training is Required to Become an Aerial Yoga Instructor?

Holly and I

Holly recommends that someone attains their 200 hour certification in yoga and then branch into at least a 50 hour certification in aerial yoga.  The program that Holly offers is a 50 hour program that provides everything a yoga instructor needs to feel comfortable creating a safe space for sharing this amazing practice with others. I’ve had two other yoga instructors both of which were trained by Holly! Both of them were great yoga instructors! Holly also consulted on setting up the gym where I practice aerial yoga.

I’m on the left and my friend Cathy is on the right. We’re in three legged downward dog pose!

What Other Interests Or Passions Do You Have?

Shoulder Stand

Holly stated, “I love gardening, foraging, Stand Up Paddleboard, travel, hiking, and playing with my dog. I’m looking forward to hopefully getting trained in paragliding since I fell in love with it in Costa Rica; and it truly allows you to have wings!” Maybe the next fitness activity I should try should be Stand Up Paddleboard yoga! Have any of you tried it?

Hip Hang: I’m on the left. My friend Cathy is on the right.

What Is Your Overall Goal and Mission?

Cathy and I Love Aerial Yoga in the Trees

Holly responded, “To stay anchored in compassion, emanate love, and continue to grow as a person that is connected to the earth and helps others see their potential and possibility to live with greater integrity and in harmony with nature; the nature of themselves and the nature of the earth.” I can tell you that Holly exudes all of these!

What Classes and Services Do You Offer?

Soma Studio – Batavia, Illinois

Holly currently offers aerial yoga in the trees at her homestead and is branching back into studio offerings at SOMA Studio in Batavia.  At her homestead, you can receive 1 hour aerial yoga session for up to 3 people at a time as well as massage therapy sessions out of the healing room. The massage sessions are offered by Michael Toniolo and all of Holly’s students receive 20% off a relaxing massage.  Holly offers sisters’ circles with each full moon and new moon on the property. She will be closing the season with a women’s campout at her homestead.

At SOMA Studio you can find workshops for children’s aerial yoga, restorative aerial yoga (that is with the hammock low to the ground) and playful hip height aerial yoga.

“In this colorful yoga guide Holly gracefully outlines the benefits of aerial yoga while offering a playful insight on essential oils, chakras, and the idea of embodying the goddess within.”

Being able to continue my aerial yoga practice at Holly’s homestead has been such a gift during the pandemic! It’s also a beautiful and relaxing sensory experience: the sun shining on your skin through the trees, the birds singing, the smell of the evergreen trees, the chickens clucking! I leave feeling relaxed, refreshed, stretched out and centered each and every time. If you live in the area and would like to join me, please leave a comment or email me! So far all the friends that have attended have loved it! I thought aerial yoga in my gym was amazing until I did aerial yoga in the trees!

Lemon Print Summer Styling

Citrus Style

The lemon trend is here to help you “squeeze” all the joy you can out of summer! The fashionable fruit motif is sure to add fresh-squeezed fun to your day and zest to your style! Don’t lemons and yellow just say summer?! It’s such a happy print and seems to return each season, which I have to say I’m not “sour” about! Enough play on words…this is a print any age and size can wear and look summer chic!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Vitamin C – C for Chic That Is…

We are in the full swing of summer in Illinois…super hot and super humid! I’m not complaining because for me the hotter the better. This lemon print romper is the perfect solution for those hot days! My criteria for rompers is easy on and off especially when thinking about frequent trips to the bathroom…LOL! Additionally, this romper has adjustable straps, which is a huge plus in my book. Lastly, it fits my torso. Finding rompers that aren’t too short can be a real challenge! To create more definition at the waist, I added a yellow belt. Green or white would also work well. Accessories complete the look. Large flower earrings and necklace are playful for summer! The peep toe lemon print shoes are borrowed from my mom! All in all this look is “easy peezy lemon squeezy”!

Lemon Print Romper

Romper: H & M
Accessories: My Wardrobe
Lemon Peep Toe Shoes: My Mom’s Closet
Yellow Belt: My Closet

If you’d prefer to be able to wear a bra with straps vs. a strapless bra, you can simply add a tee or in my case, I’ve added a Halftee. To see a previous blog post on this great layering solution, click HERE. The Halftee allows me to wear my regular bra without adding a lot of bulk underneath. How cute are these lemon earrings and lemon wedge necklace?! The change in accessories switches the look and feel of this romper.

Lemon Earrings and Necklace: Cora’s Den
Cora’s Den is a small family owned business in Arkansas. Love that they will customize items for you; and they have great service and delivery. I’ve been trying to support small business especially owned by women!

This lemon print romper can be worn casually and for many occasions. Being as we can only socialize outside it’s perfect for lunches or dinners out, family BBQ’s, date nights, etc.

Flashback

Did you ever have a lemonade stand as a child? I had one with a neighbor boy. He was selling bags of popcorn; and I was selling lemonade. Actually, it looks more like Koolade in the picture. The perfect arrangement right?! People would eat the popcorn and be thirsty for Koolade. The only problem was that we lived at the very end of a dead end street. No one came down that far to even know we were having a sale. Plus if they did, they probably wouldn’t have seen us behind the bushes! As a young girl, it felt like we sat there all day long and not a single sale! Now I’m wondering why our parents didn’t tell us it probably wasn’t a good idea especially since this escapade most likely required their assistance! LOL

Lemon Print Shorts

High waisted paper bag shorts/pants continue to trend. In order to elevate the look of the shorts, I paired them with my Marc Fischer wedges and a light weight eyelet top. You could dress these shorts more casual by wearing a white, yellow or green tee and some flat sandals even some flip flops. Gold banana leaf earrings also add an element of dressiness to this look.

High Waisted Paper Bay Shorts: H & M
Eyelet Top: Kohl’s
Marc Fischer Wedges: My Closet

Lemon Print Top

Not all lemon prints are the same and many have varying colored backgrounds. Depending on your size you might want a smaller print. Because I am tall (5’8″) and average build, I can pull off larger prints. If you’re more petite, large prints can overwhelm so go for smaller prints like this top. This top can easily be worn with navy blue shorts, denim shorts, white pants, navy blue pants, yellow jeans…and the options go on and on.

Lemon Print Top: My Closet (Loft)
White Scalloped Shorts: My Closet (Loft)

Lemon Print Accessories

Maybe prints aren’t your thing. You can always get in on the trend by adding in accessories like my Cora’s Den jewelry, or a lemon purse, shoes, etc. Don’t let prints put a wedge (see what I did there) between you and the lemon print trend! This striped dress is a perfect example of how to add the lemon trend without going overboard. All I’m missing is a cute lemon wedge cross body bag!

Over 80 Styling Featuring My Mom

Since I borrowed my mom’s shoes for this post, I thought it would be fun to include her. She was more than eager to participate. My mom just turned 83 on July 16th. You know my motto: You’re never too old! If you love something and feel good in it, you should go ahead and wear it. If you exude confidence, that’s what everyone will notice.

My mom shopped her closet for her whole look! Yellow is super trendy right now so it’s easy to wear it and add lemon accents in your accessories or in this case, my mom’s lemon print shoes. Her linen top is Ralph Lauren. She layered it over a sleeveless white tunic and her white capris.

My mom got her purse on a girl’s road trip. We like that the black and polka dot/paisley print pop against the pale yellow and white. Her jewelry was from a vacation to Door County, Wisc.

Hats are a constant in my mom’s wardrobe! She wears them often, which causes her to confidently stand out in a crowd. As she put this hat on, she wanted to make sure I knew that this is exactly how she’d wear it. I already knew that…LOL! Accessories always complete a look!

My mom wanted to point out the criss cross detail on her capris at the ankle. She likes details just like I do! Here are the cute lemon print shoes. They’ve been in her closet so long that she doesn’t remember where she got them. Mom and I enjoy sharing shoes and jewelry!

Star Spangled Style

Fun with July 4th Fashion

Happy July friends! July is my favorite month of the year for many reasons! We’re fully into summer and it’s usually hot! Heat, sun, flowers, blue skies…all make me happy! July makes me think of fun outdoor activities with family and friends like going to the pool, cookouts, vacationing, July 4th fireworks and celebrations…did I mention my birthday is July 4th?! Probably for that reason I love to decorate my house both indoors and outdoors in patriotic colors and wear red, white and blue! Do you like to decorate, dress and celebrate the 4th?

Truly, the whole summer season feels very patriotic. Memorial Day kicks off the season, followed by the Fourth of July, and finally Labor Day unofficially closing the season. There are many chances to wear our red, white and blue. In fact, you don’t even need a holiday for an excuse; red, white, and blue can be worn all summer long.

American Vibes

Jean Shorts

Jean shorts seem like a summer staple and can be worn all season and into the fall. Jean shorts are a perfect place to start your look especially if you’re wanting to be casual. Why not pair your jean shorts with a little sparkle and some sequins for a slightly elevated look? These distressed Bermuda jean shorts are a recent purchase from Old Navy. They have a nice amount of stretch in them and if you’re at all self-conscious about your thighs, they give nice coverage. I’ve paired it with not one but two sequined tops…a red sequin tank top underneath my navy blue and white striped sequined t-shirt. Silver slides and red, white and blue accessories complete this look.

If sequins aren’t your thing, you could easily wear a striped blue and white t-shirt with a red tank top or even a solid colored t-shirt in your preferred color. Accessories are always a must for me in order for me to feel finished and polished. Now is the perfect time to add some holiday pieces to your collection if you don’t already have some.

Necklace: Previously Purchased at Stein Mart
The bracelets are actually three separate pieces, which I’ve had for some time. I like to layer and stack my bracelets of course you could easily just wear one or two.

This t-shirt is oversized and could easily be worn over bike shorts or leggings. (To see our previous blog post on bike shorts, click HERE.) I wanted a more fitted look so I tied the sides together in a knot. The tee is slightly sheer so I’m wearing a bralette. To say I’ve been on a quest for a bralette is an understatement. I recently purchased this bralette at Flair on 3rd Boutique in Geneva. This particular bralette is simply worn over your own bra, which is a major win for me! Bralettes are intended to be seen and yet provide coverage. The sleeves on the t-shirt could be pulled down further if I wanted a full bare shoulder.

Red, White and Blue Star Earrings: Cora’s Den
Bralette: Flair on 3rd Boutique
Jean Shorts: My Closet (New York and Company)
T-Shirt: My Closet

Jeans

Not all patriotic holiday looks need to be red, white and blue. This look can easily be worn for Independence Day or any time of year. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of all things stars. Stars have been and continue to be trending on all items of clothing. This star burnout crop top can easily be worn over any color. I paired it with a silver tank. The jeans are embellished with star appliques and sequined stars. I’ve added my star earrings and necklace and silver slides. For a pop of color, I added my red sunnies! This actually might be one of my favorite looks!

Star Burnout Top: My Closet (Amazon)
Star Embellished Jeans: My Closet (I.N.C. Macy’s)

White Jeans & White Pants

White jeans and white pants are wardrobe staples, which you probably already own. These looks are slightly more dressy but can also be styled more casual. The color combination of the top caught my eye because it’s red, white, blue and pink! Love the addition of pink and can easily be worn year round. I wore this look last year to a Memorial Day Festival to watch my husband’s band play. I was probably overdressed for an outdoor festival but you know that I don’t care! Any solid colored top would look great with the white jeans and don’t forget you’re accessories!

Top: My Closet (Stein Mart)
White Jeans: My Closet (Old Navy)

This navy blue with sequined stars t-shirt can easily be worn with shorts and jeans. It pairs great with these wide leg white pants. Styling tip, if you go wide on the bottom half of your body, go more fitted on the top half. These wide leg, high waisted pants are super comfortable and very cool especially if it’s hot out. Silver slides are a great investment and go with so many looks – from casual to dressy! In the past, I’ve worn the sequin star top with jean shorts.

This flag clutch is covered in sequins and beads. It’s the perfect accessory!

Star T-Shirt: My Closet (New York and Company)
High Waisted White Pants: My Closet (I.N.C. Macy’s)

Sequins

Sequins and July 4th go hand in hand don’t you think?! You knew I would need to have a whole separate category for holiday sequin looks in addition to the ones previously shared! Besides Christmas and New Year’s, July 4th is the perfect holiday to go blingy! You can wear a little bit of sequins or go full out! Which do you think I prefer?! LOL!

Sequin Top: My Closet (New York and Company)
Red Shorts: My Closet (J.C. Penney’s)

This navy blue t-shirt is covered in round sequins in a multitude of colors. I also have this t-shirt in white. The navy tshirt came out two years ago. They brought out the white tshirt last year. If you love something, I recommend buying multiples. Both would go great with white shorts, white jeans, jeans, jean shorts…you get the idea. I opted for my red shorts.

Vacation Last July: John F. Kennedy Space Center: NASA

This sequin look is super comfortable! The shorts are pull on and came out last year around Pride celebrations in June. The multi-colored sequin striped sides caught my attention! The shorts pair great with this sequin multi color star t-shirt. This is a look I wear all summer long and is perfect for the 4th!

Sequin Star Top: My Closet (I.N.C. Macy’s)
Sequin Striped Shorts: My Closet (H & M)

I added a little side twist to give the t-shirt a little more shape and not interfere with the stars at the hem of the t-shirt.

The star sunnies were purchased in a boutique in South Dakota two years ago while we were on vacation.

Pattern Shorts

Last weeks blog featured all the ways to wear gingham and I featured these navy blue gingham shorts. (To see that blog post, click HERE.) The gingham shorts are perfect for July 4th. A plain navy blue top and a white denim vest were easy to add to the shorts. I added my red, white and blue scarf and a vintage Trifari flag pin that was a birthday gift from my dear friend Cindy. (To read a previous blog post on Trifari Jewelry, click HERE.)

Gingham Shorts: Old Navy
Navy Blue Top & White Denim Vest: My Closet (Chico’s)
Red, White and Blue Scarf: My Closet (Boutique in Door County, Wisc.)

These red shorts with embroidered white stars are perfect for any July 4th celebration! This graphic Party in the USA t-shirt keeps the look casual and comfortable.

Graphic T-Shirt: My Closet (J.C. Penney’s)
Red Star Shorts: My Closet (J.C. Penney’s)

In my opinion, Old Navy always has a great selection of July 4th/Independence Day T-Shirts for the whole family. You can always get them on sale and have them for years to come. I grabbed a couple this year for my self. This t-shirt has tiny stars, which are a little difficult to see. Why not wear a star t-shirt with the star shorts?!

Star T-Shirt: Old Navy

July 4th Celebrations

I’ve always loved having my birthday on July 4th and was often told I was “born with a bang”! I was actually due to be born on July 7th. My mom tells me that it was raining on July 4th, 1961 and the family picnic was in question so why not go have a baby?! It was and always will be special because I was born on my paternal grandmother’s birthday so it was always a dual celebration. I’m pretty sure the fireworks are for me…right?!

Katy Perry says, “‘Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on show ’em what your worth
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y.” That’s my plan as I head into 5-9! I intend to make chapter 59 one not to be forgotten!

My 1st Birthday! I think my mom looks like she’s out of a magazine – 1962! The cake on the table is on a white platter. You’ll see that white platter in almost every birthday picture so it must have been special. I still have it!
Apparently, I needed some encouragement to dive into my cake!
Many of my cakes were red, white and blue!
My favorite cake as a child had Cinderella’s carriage on it! Unfortunately, the pictures are difficult to see so I didn’t include it.
You can see my birthday candle on the table. Every year it got pulled out and the old age was burned down until the new age was reached. It was a fun tradition. My mom still buys that candle for a special and unique baby shower gift! I still have the gold bracelet I’m wearing here. My granddaughter Violet has also worn it in several portraits.
Celebrating my birthday with my Grandma was always a delight! Now as an adult I’m wondering if she minded sharing her special day with me. I’m pretty sure the answer is no, she didn’t mind at all! I loved my grandma dearly! The statue on my cake this year was a collectible. It had July on sash and a red ruby, which you can see in the picture. (July’s Birthstone)

Gingham Trends

How to Wear Gingham

Gingham is a print that has been around for ages! In the fashion world, gingham, like florals and polka dots, rolls around every summer. When I think of gingham, I think of the traditional black and white. However, this summer you can find gingham in almost every color with updated trends like puffy sleeves, ruffles and in accessories like headbands, shoes, necklaces and bags. I even saw a how to on how to paint your nails gingham. Since gingham is a trend that doesn’t seem to go away and is simply updated, it’s a great idea to have a few pieces in your wardrobe. Similar to polka dots, gingham makes me happy! How about you?

Black and White Gingham

This black and white gingham blazer was purchased last season but has the puffy sleeve trend that continues to go strong this year! I shared this look with you last week when we were talking about styling bike shorts. You can read that blog post: HERE. The mix of a classic print like gingham along with trendy bike shorts works! You can pair this blazer with any black or white bottoms – shorts, pants, jeans. A pop of color would look great..think red shorts or pants or even yellow, which I’ll show you shortly!

This black and white gingham top has slit sleeves and small embroidered daisies. Here it’s paired with black shorts and my black and white gingham slides. I was gifted this cigar box purse. One side is the old cigar box and the other side is covered in gingham material. This would be a great DIY project for you crafty gals!

Here is the same top paired with black jeans and yellow pants. These pictures were taken several years ago. The jewelry (pin and earrings) in these pictures is vintage and was once my grandma’s!

Yellow Gingham

I recently read that matching the color of your gingham to your hair’s tone brings out the natural highlights for instant lock luster! It’s no secret that one of my favorite colors to wear is yellow perhaps that is because it goes well with my hair color and skin tone. That might be a whole other post! I didn’t own any yellow gingham so opted to order this yellow gingham dress. It’s fully lined and has pockets. It’s light weight and perfect for summer.

Gingham Dress: Amazon
Wedges: My Closet (Marc Fischer)
Crossbody Bag: My Closet (Francesca’s)

If you’re not a fan of wearing sleeveless and/or always cold like myself, it’s easy to layer on a lightweight summer sweater.

SHOP THE DRESS

The dress runs true to size and comes in yellow, black, blue and red!

Blue Gingham

Besides yellow, blue is a favorite color to wear. Originally, I bought this top to wear for the Memorial Day and July 4th Holidays. However, it can be worn all spring and summer. The red embroidered detail and bell sleeves adds extra interest as does the fact that it buttons up the back. It’s been in my closet for some time and is slightly too big for me but I like it too much to part with it yet! Do you ever do that? It could probably be altered by a good seamstress. I’ve also paired this top with white jeans and red sandals. It would be cute with red or white shorts.

This is my COVID hair before the salons were open again…UGH!
Blue Gingham Top: My Closet (Stein Mart)

Gingham shorts are a cute option! These blue gingham shorts would pair great with any colored top especially a white or blue tee. I decided to pattern mix by pairing floral with the gingham.

SHOP THIS LOOK

Red Gingham

I’ve been doing a lot of on line shopping since stores have been closed. On line this top looked more white and red, but in person what I thought looked white actually looks pale pink. This red is more on the orange side and did not look right with any of my red short options. Therefore, I paired it with my white shorts and rolled with the pale pink in my slides and a belt even though these shorts don’t have any belt loops. The pleated flutter sleeves and the pleated neckline add additional interest. This top could also be worn with white jeans, blue denim shorts or red shorts if you had the right shade. This would be a cute look for July 4th!

Gingham is a safe bet. It’s a classic with some modern spins this season. If you don’t have any gingham pieces, consider adding some to your wardrobe. You won’t regret it and will be able to wear it for years to come! Gingham and summer go hand in hand! I’m thinking I need some pink gingham in my life and perhaps a jumpsuit…LOL!

How to Style Bike Shorts

Bike Shorts Trend

If you’re a mid-lifer like myself, you probably recall the bike short trend of the ’80s. The style was originally created for functional purposes: to hide marks created by sitting on a bicycle seat for extended periods. The stretchy shorts, most often falling somewhere between mid-thigh and knee, are the ultimate pull-on-and-go piece. And their latest iteration finds them more versatile than ever. Sure, it’s an easy pairing to an oversized T-shirt or hoodie, but it also works well under a sheer dress, with a puff-sleeve top, or paired with an oversized cardigan, worn as a shirt. Team your bike shorts with an oversize blazer and heels and you’ve got a dressy ensemble that feels glamorous without being overdone.

I don’t believe that I wore them in the ’80s but perhaps my memory fails me! Since I’m comfortable wearing leggings, I decided to give bike shorts a try. Bike shorts, in my opinion, are the shorter version of leggings!

Look 1 Bike Shorts and Blazers

When styling bike shorts, think about how you’d style your leggings. Since they’re fitted to your legs and mid section, you’ll want to pair them with something loose fitting and even oversized on the top. That’s why bike shorts pair great with blazers. For the first look, I decided to pair the bike shorts with this gingham, oversized, puffy sleeved blazer along with a loose fitting cami.

Gingham Blazer: My Closet
Cami: My Closet (Express)
Bike Shorts: Amazon
Gingham Slides: My Closet

Here is a similar look pairing the bike shorts with a boyfriend blazer and cami. I’m not really a fan of how my hips look in the bike shorts so I prefer this longer boyfriend cut blazer and longer cami to the gingham blazer and white cami. My torso is on the long side so I have to look for long items but not quit tall lengths. Both of these looks could easily be worn out for a date night, lunch date with girlfriends, shopping…Where would you wear this look?

Boyfriend Blazer: My Closet (Express)
Cami: My Closet (Amazon)
Bike Shorts: Amazon
Pumps: My Closet (Sam Edelman)

Here’s how my two IG friends styled their bike shorts with blazers. I’ve introduced you to both of these lovely ladies in the past so you might recognize them. First is Cindy, of Cindy Scurry. Cindy frequently participates with myself and the others of Stylish Mondays.

Cindy looks great with her blazer belted, which adds some definition and highlights her tiny waist!

Cindy adds an element of interest by a pop of color – yellow above and red below. Wearing a neutral color on your feet elongates you legs! Who doesn’t want longer, leaner looking legs? Although Cindy doesn’t need any help!

Next, is Mary Anne of Macribbs. I featured Mary Anne last year in the spring. To read that post, click HERE. Mary Anne shared with me that she had been looking for leopard print bike shorts since last spring but they sold out at H & M. (Mary Anne lives in Canada.) She was particular with the length she wanted the shorts. Mary Anne got her shorts at SHEIN for $7. The deal, coupon loving queen thinks that’s amazing! Fashion doesn’t have to cost a fortune!

Here’s how Mary Anne styled her leopard print bike shorts with a black blazer. Isn’t the pop of pink in her purse a great addition? Don’t be afraid to add in pops of color!

Mary Anne put a slightly different spin on the blazer by pairing the bike shorts with a trench coat! This looks fabulous and inspires me to give this look a try! Again notice the pop of color in her purse. Don’t forget that leopard is considered a neutral and, therefore, pairs great with any color. Love the addition of the booties! Mary Anne looks so chic!

Look 2 Bike Shorts and a Kimono

Last week, I shared this look with you for my post on Jackie Ayers and Dytology. To see that post, click HERE. As you’re aware, kimonos continue to trend, which was also a previous post linked above on Stylish Mondays. My drape front hoodie by Dyetology seemed like a perfect match to the bike shorts. I added a plain black cami and black peep toes for a column of color. A column of color is slimming. This look is slightly more edgy so I’d probably wear it out to my husband’s band gigs, date night or a night out with girlfriends.

Drape Front Hoodie: Dyetology
Black Cami: My Closet
Peep Toe Booties: My Closet (Shoe Carnival)

Mary Anne paired her leggings with a shorter kimono and flip flops for a more casual look.

Mary Anne also styled her leopard leggings with a distressed sweater for a slightly more edgy look. It’s too warm in Illinois for a sweater right now but the bike shorts will transition great into fall with big oversized sweaters and booties.

Look 3 Bike Shorts and Jean Jackets

This look would be great for almost anything with the exception of going to work (at least for me). I swapped out the drape front hoodie for my black jean jacket and the peep toes for the silver slides. Then I traded out the black cami for a black trimmed in silver tee and took the jean jacket off. I probably wouldn’t wear the second look without a jacket as it’s too body hugging for my liking.

Jean Jacket: My Closet
Silver Slides: My Closet
Black with Silver Trim T-Shirt: Macy’s

Mary Anne paired her leopard leggings with a Mickey Mouse leopard print t-shirt, jean jacket and cream colored peep toes for a more casual look.

Look 4 Bike Shorts and Oversized T-Shirts and Oversized Sweatshirts

Bike shorts and large oversized t-shirts are an easy match! It’s super comfortable and would look good on most body types! In addition to my black bike shorts, I got a hot pink pair. My Jimi Hendrix graphic t-shirt and blue jean jacket were an easy pairing along with my leopard print P448s.

For a super casual look that I’ve actually just been wearing around the house, in the yard, etc., I’ve added my NIU Huskies oversized t-shirt. (shout out to my alma mater) Thought I’d throw on my cropped jean jacket, which I think looks cute with the oversized tee. If I added some jewelry, I might actually go out in this look. You know that I tend to be fancy so this is super casual for me and not something I’d wear out although I would wear it to run on a quick errand.

NIU T-Shirt: My Closet (NIU Bookstore)
Cropped Denim Jacket: Portland, Oregon
Sequined Slides: My Closet

On cool summer morning or evenings, leggings pair great with oversized sweatshirts. This look will also transition great into fall. Mary Anne added her baseball hat, backpack purse and tennies for a super casual look.

The leopard bike shorts paired with the mules and oversized Blonde sweatshirt is still casual and can be worn anywhere!

Look 5 Bike Shorts and Whatever You Like

By now you’ve figured out that bike shorts similar to leggings can pretty much pair with anything depending on your comfort level but the ease of wearing them and styling them is not deniable!

Mary Anne’s last look is pairing the leopard bike shorts with this asymmetrical sweater, pearls and pumps! What a fabulously fancy look! Wouldn’t you agree?! (Love how Mary Anne matches her carpet!)

Cindy’s last look is so chic: white and black top, black jacket, black bike shorts and black pumps!

Feature a Friend

Meet Jackie of Dyetology

Jackie Ayres
Owner and Designer of Dyetology

Meeting interesting, creative women is one of the best parts about blogging and the investment of time on social media platforms. Some time ago I began to see posts by Jackie and by other women wearing her creations and raving all about them. Tie dye has been trending at least since last year and is going strong this year. Perhaps you were a fan of tie dye back in the 70’s. If you’re an FTF follower, you know that I’m a big fan of tie dye. To see a previous post, click HERE.

What sparked your interest in tie dye?

“I have my BFA (bachelor’s of fine arts) in Fashion Design. While I was getting my Fashion degree I took 2 years of “Surface Design” where I learned how to dye fabric, screen printing, batiking  – anything to do really with adding color to fabric! I fell in love with it and then when it came time to do my senior collection, which consisted of 7 outfits that we had to design, draft the patterns for the designs, sew the pieces etc…I ended up hand-dyeing most of the collection.”

When and why did you decide to start your own business?

“I spent 17 years in Corporate designing for big brands. I had worked my way up the ranks and had a title, a salary, a team etc….however I wasn’t happy and I wasn’t fulfilled. I had started dyeing again as a creative outlet from my day job. I wanted to do something completely different than what I was doing in my day job. It lead me back to working with my hands (vs on a computer all day). I am a kinesthetic person which means I love to touch and feel everything! I love working with fabrics and I love working with color- so dyeing is the perfect combination of the two. I didn’t return to dyeing with the intention of starting a business, that happened organically.  I eventually left my Corporate job to go all in on Dyetology and haven’t looked back.”

How do you decide on the colors you use in each item?

“Channeling my inner astronaut 👩‍🚀 in our new Cosmic color way! 🌌 Pinks, turquoise, and gray fade into a linear pattern, creating an out of this world look 🌠 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I love the Easy Shirts because they can be worn year round. In the cooler months I layer them with a jean jacket or open cardi. Then when the temps rise these babies keep cool, calm, and collected… they are so soft and flowy and breathable 💃”

“I do so much color development and testing before I land on a final colorway. I am constantly collecting color inspiration on my phone (so easy basically having a camera with you at all times). Nature is a huge source of inspiration to me as nature’s color palettes are perfect aren’t they? From there and I will tinker with dye combinations that I think will yield what I’m going for in my head!  It can take as many as 5-10 “tests” to get it right…and sometimes it just doesn’t work out! Additionally, I have learned through the years which colors my ladies LOVE and always try to have that in my line for them to choose from.”

How long does it take you to create a piece?

“It depends on the piece- the hand dyeing process takes 2 days from start to finish and takes approximately 11 steps. Then if the garment has additional embellishments, details etc that can take additional hours to complete.”

What’s your favorite item/s to make?

“One of A Kind” Denim Jackets

“I just launched some “One Of A Kind” denim jackets that combines my love of denim (I spent 5 years at Lane Bryant designing denim and to this day was one of my favorite things to design). They are hand-dyed and embellished with all sorts of embellishments, trims etc and each one is unique. These have been so much fun to make!!”

This embellishment loving gal will definitely be getting one of these amazing denim jackets as soon as they’re ready!

What’s the best part about being a business owner?

“So hard to narrow down to 1 thing so I will tell you where I get the most enjoyment- creating pieces that are beautiful and also feel amazing on (I use natural fibers for my materials like cotton, silk, rayon, bamboo etc so it’s soft, breathable and feels great) and women also feel beautiful while wearing them. That gives me so much joy to get notes from my ladies telling me how much they love their new piece and how wonderful they feel in it! That’s priceless. The other part of being a business owner you get to decide to where/how you want to make a difference. After I read an article that socks are the most needed clothing item in homeless shelters, I decided right then and there I was going do a sock mission. I was already making socks and so it would be easy to do. So now for every sock purchase, we donate a pair to a local homeless shelter and they are the same yummy bamboo sock quality that you buy as the customer.  Our “Socks for Hope” mission was started in 2017 and we have donated over 2k pairs to date. I also have been able to donate and parter with local organizations and give back.”

What are your tips and tricks for styling tie dye pieces so you look current and trendy vs. old school; or maybe old school is new school…LOL

“Since the “tie dye “ trend started on the runways a few years ago and now trickled down to mainstream I’ve seen an evolution from the the high end designers doing more a traditional tie dye look with bright colors, spirals etc….It’s evolved into so many more colors and patterns and that’s been fun for me since what I do is really hand-dyeing vs. the traditional tie dye look. I wrote a blog post for my ladies on“How to Wear Tie Dye in a Modern Way” . I love to mix it up with a statement jewelry, a fun shoe, graphic tees with your hand-dyed/tie dye piece to look modern!!”

Drape Front Hoodie

Drape Front Hoodie in Candy Land

While we’ve been sheltering in place during the pandemic, I was trying to support small businesses and especially women in business. It made total sense to order the drape front hoodie from Jackie! The drape front hoodie is so unbelievable soft and super easy to style! It’s truly a unique piece as I haven’t seen it anywhere else. I chose moon stone because I felt as though the colors (kind of neutral) would be super easy to pair with so many other colors. I have to admit that I was really torn between moon stone and candy land…so candy land is also still on my radar!

The hoodie pairs great with a graphic t-shirt, and jeans…for a casual and hip look! I would wear this for a day of errands, fun with girlfriends, seeing my husband’s band play…the options could be endless! The hoodie drapes beautifully and covers the back side and hip area quit nicely especially if those are areas of concern for you.

Drape Front Hoodie: Dyetology
Jeans: Express
Graphic T-Shirt: Evereve

The hoodie can be worn many ways and throughout all of the seasons which makes it so versatile! The second way I opted to style it was by pairing it with biker shorts, a cami, statement necklace and peep-toe shoes. (Biker shorts are trending so look for a future post on that trend…think leggings but shorts!) The biker shorts and cami create a column of black, which is slimming. This look could easily be worn for all the same activities as the look above.

Details make my heart sing! When I received my drape front hoodie, Jacki included a tie dye face mask and a wrist wrap just because; and I have to say that the mask is my favorite of all my masks! Additionally, she sent a hand written note of thanks. Lastly, I adore that the hoodie has a Dyetology tag! You know that I have many tie dye items in my wardrobe but none as special as the items by Jackie!

Jackie’s passion about her work and supporting others is so evident! On her website she writes:

“I love making clothes for women that not only make them beautiful but also get them noticed- in a good way. I mean who doesn’t love it when someone sees your outfit and says “ Oh my goodness, I LOVE your shirt! It’s so beautiful! Where did you get it?

I am passionate about helping women to look and feel their best! I hate seeing women frustrated with their closets and getting dressed each day. I love to give quick and easy styling tips to help women get out the door quicker and stress-free.”

I hope you’ll give Jackie a follow on all of her platforms and add some beautiful one of kind tie dye pieces to your wardrobe. You won’t regret it!

5 Ways to Style Colorful Kimonos

According to Stylecaster: “Inspired by traditional Japanese robes, contemporary kimonos have been given a modern update—prints, fringe, varying lengths—and will give any outfit a cool, boho vibe. And if you think they’re only appropriate for music festivals, think again: Kimonos can be worn with anything in your closet, from skinny jeans and heels or layered over a mini dress for some serious ’70s vibes.”

Kimonos are here to stay. They’re the perfect thing to wear on a summer day that’s not too hot—or a spring/fall day that’s not too cold. They flutter through the breeze oh-so perfectly, and let’s be honest, they’re so darn pretty. There is no real right or wrong way to wear them.

Full Disclosure: Today’s posts includes looks from my closet that I’ve had for some time and pictures I had previously taken for social media posts, etc. My hair is looking pretty horrendous from months of outgrowth. However, I have an appointment tomorrow! Relief is in sight! Can you relate?

Look 1 Kimonos with White Jeans

The colors, satin trim, light and airy nature of this kimono was so appealing to me. It pairs perfectly with white jeans (or you could pair with white pants) and my beaded handmade belt from Costa Rica. Because a kimono is loose fitting and flowing, I opt for a fitted tank underneath to give some shape to my body. Styling tip: when you wear something loose fitting and flowing on top, pair it with more fitted bottoms! A kimono is a great option to cover up your arms and behind if those are areas of concern for you. I wore this look to work but it could be worn almost anywhere…think a lunch date with girlfriends, shopping, running errands, dinner date with the hubby. The options are endless!

Tank: Shopped My Closet (Chico’s)
Beaded Hand-Made Belt: Vacation in Costa Rica
White Jeans: Shopped My Closet

Citrus prints are trending especially all things lemons! I liked the color combination of pink and yellow and the interesting crocheted detailing in the back of this kimono. This is also a look I wore to work but like the look above can be worn almost any where. You can easily switch out the jeans and wear it with pants or even white shorts. I’ve seen many bloggers wear kimonos with shorts. Since colored jeans are trending, I’d even pair this kimono with pale pink or yellow jeans. To see a previous post on colored denim, click: HERE

Look 2 Kimonos with Blue Jeans

This is my newest kimono, which was actually purchased last summer while on sale. I liked the fringe on the bottom, the bright colors (which don’t show as bright as they are) and how it pairs great with neon colors! The t-shirt is actually more of a neon orange than it shows. In order to give the t-shirt a more fitted look, I knotted it in the center. You could also do a half or full tuck. The capri jeans have an interesting detail/hem with similar colors and some beading. Throw on some jewelry and you’re out the door. I actually wore this look when I was meeting with my local blogging friends for the first time this past summer. We met or appetizers and drinks. Looking forward to when we can do that again!

Kimono, Capri Jeans and Jewelry: Shopped My Closet (Chico’s)
Peep Toe Booties: Shopped My Closet (Amazon)

All but one of my kimonos have been purchased at Chico’s. The next two are reversible and it’s such a great idea since you’re able to to get so many looks out of one item! The material on this kimono. is heavier than the others adding some more warmth (for this cold gal)! There are many colors that can be paired with this kimono. The embellishment on the jeans match the pattern in the kimono and that a win for this matchy matchy girl! Plain jeans would pair well as well as colored denim or shorts.

Kimono, Jeans, Tank, Jewelry: Shopped My Closet (Chico’s)

The reversible side has the cutest elephant print! I opted to wear a fuchsia colored tank with the elephant print. It also wears well with a cream colored tank. The other great thing about kimonos is that no matter your size you can continue to wear them. The picture on the far left and right is during my weight loss journey and the middle picture is at goal weight. To read about my weight loss journey click: HERE. I can continue to wear the kimono. However, you probably notice that in the middle picture I used a small rubber band to create a knot and flipped it under. This is a styling trick to create a more fitted look.

These pictures were taken recently as opposed to my opening statements about previously taken pictures. I hadn’t worn this kimono since I was very heavy and wanted to try it at it my current weight. I’ve styled it similarly to how I originally styled it with the exception of different jeans. This kimono is also reversible although I have yet to wear it on the other side. I think I’m not as fond of the print but should push myself to figure it out. What would you wear it with?

Kimono, Navy Blue T-Shirt, Tassel Jeans, Jewelry: Shopped My Closet (Chico’s)
Peep Toes: Amazon

Look 3 Kimono with Shorts

Pairing a kimono with shorts is not a look that I’ve worn previously. As mentioned, I’ve seen many others wear kimonos with shorts and I think it looks super cute on them. In all honesty, I’m not particularly fond of how this outfit turned out. In hind sight, I think the material is too heavy to be paired with shorts. I think a thinner airier kimono would pair better. Think my first three kimonos would be a better match for shorts. What do you think?

Shorts: Shopped my Closet (New York and Company)

Showing you the reverse side to this kimono. It’s a golden yellow with fuchsia design. I’m thinking a fuchsia top with black jeans might work well.

Look 5 Kimonos with Swimsuits

Kimonos make great swimsuit cover ups! I have several that were purchased for that sole purpose. However, they’d be easy to pair with pants, jeans and shorts. This first look was inspired by a favorite blogger of mine!

Swimsuit, Kimono: Shopped My Closet (Amazon)
Sandals: Shopped My Closet (Steve Madden DSW)
Swimsuit, Kimono, Sunglasses: My Closet (Amazon)

While this look is now several ears old, I would still wear it exactly the same today. The sunnies I crafted myself to look like a very expensive pair. I don’t wear jewelry to the beach or pool but wanted a glammed up look for these pictures! This kimono would be cute with a white cami and black jeans or black jean shorts! It would also pair great with white jeans.
