How to Style a Flannel Shirt

For many years, a flannel shirt held little to no appeal for me. A flannel shirt was not an article of clothing that I could see myself wearing and being excited to style. Additionally, I couldn’t imagine it being worn any other way but casual. Since I’m pretty much extra all the time, flannel shirts were not an option I’d consider. That is until I began blogging and posting on social media. Opening my eyes to new possibilities outside of my norm has been exciting. It is always one of my recommendations to try new things even if you’re stepping outside of your comfort zone and norm. You just might be surprised what you discover you like. Flannel shirts fit that category for me. I have always liked plaid and fun colors. Today flannel shirts come in many color combinations and many styles so you’re bound to find at least a few that you like. Here is how I took one flannel shirt and styled it multiple ways from fancy to casual! Let’s start with fancy! My favorite!

Flannel Shirt Look 1

Since we’re are in the midst of December and the holidays, a classic black and red buffalo plaid flannel seemed like a perfect choice! I love any reason to pull out my tulle skirt so pairing these together seemed like a fun, fancy idea. I’ve added tights and my matching kitten heels pumps. A statement necklace adds interest and elevates the look. If you wanted, you could also add a belt. The best part is that this outfit is not only holiday ready it’s also super comfy!

Flannel Shirt Look 2

Did you catch my two blogs about the faux leather trend that is going strong? (Click HERE and HERE) A flannel shirt will pair great with faux leather skirts, pants, joggers, leggings and here with my faux leather shorts. You can see I kept the same elements from look 1 and traded my skirt for my shorts. If you live in a colder climate like I do, wearing tights helps to keep you warm. If you’re in a warmer climate, you easily wear the shorts without tights. You could also roll up the sleeves and add tennis shoes instead of heels for a more casual look. How cute are these…

Plaid Lace Up Sneakers

Flannel Shirt Look 3

You can add a blazer or jacket with the flannel shirt in order to create a more tailored look. To make the look more festive, you could add a velvet blazer or even think sequins for a fancier holiday look but keeping it tailored. I love this fringy jacket that has been in my closet for quit some time. It’s cuddly and extra warm. It would also be easy to trade my faux leather shorts out for a pair of black dress pants.

Black Velvet Blazer

Black Sequin Blazer

Flannel Shirt Look 4

Flannel shirts go great with jeans and faux leather leggings. These leggings are THE BEST and are under $20! I have more expensive pairs and these are my absolute favorites! They don’t roll, stay in place, hold me in just right and are super duper comfy! Leggings or jeans and a flannel are always an easy styling option. To keep it kind of festive, I layered my flannel over a holiday t-shirt. My holiday t-shirt says “Merry and Bright”. I liked the matching trees in plaid and checks. I matched my socks and added a fun sparkly pair of boots.

Lastly, I enlisted the help of all my stylish friends to share how they’ve styled their favorite flannel shirt or shacket. To see my previous blog on shackets and the shacket trend, click HERE.

Gratitude and Giving Thanks

The month of November and the Thanksgiving Holiday Season are the perfect times to reflect on all that is good and the abundance of blessings in our lives! Gratitude is such an easy practice and yet so powerful with so many benefits so I try and practice it daily! To see my previous post on Gratitude: click HERE. The Oxford Dictionary defines the word thankful as “pleased and relieved.” Both of those are great feelings. … The Oxford Dictionary defines the word grateful as “showing an appreciation of kindness.” This is where the difference lies; being thankful is a feeling, and being grateful is an action.

When I look at and reflect on my list over the years, the things I’m grateful and thankful for don’t change much but the specifics change slightly! Here is my 2021 Thanksgiving and Gratitude Reflections!

Grateful to Celebrate a Milestone Birthday

Sequin Top

Tulle Skirt

Star Denim Shorts

Star Tennis Shoes

It often catches me slightly off guard when I hear someone complain or vent about getting another year older. Even the saying, “Getting old ain’t for the faint of heart!” while perhaps somewhat true, I much prefer this quote: “Old age isn’t so bad when you consider the alternative.” Celebrating my 60th birthday with all my family and girlfriends this past year felt like such a wonderful opportunity to appreciate another year and allow me to look forward to more opportunities for adventures and experiences in my future! A gift so many never get. (To read a previous blog post on why you should do birthday pictures at any age, click HERE.) My mantra continues to be: You’re never too old! It’s never too late!

Grateful for Life Long Friends

High School Girlfriends
College Girlfriends

Tie Dye T-shirt Dress

Along with turning 60, I was able to take two wonderful girlfriend trips to celebrate our birthdays! I can’t imagine my life without them in it! Our friendship and our time together always fuels my soul and brings me such a sense of gratitude and thankfulness! (To read about our celebratory trips, click HERE and HERE.)

Grateful for My Health

Bike Shorts

Rolling Stones T-Shirt

Workout Leggings

While I do have a rare autoimmune disease called, Scleroderma and did catch Covid this past year (even though I am fully immunized), my overall health is good! (To read a previous post about Scleroderma, click HERE.) Maintaining good health and fitness continues to be a priority for me, which in turn enables me to continue doing the things I love and being active no matter my age! I was able to try several new fitness activities this past year. Additionally, I got to go zip lining with my granddaughter and step-daughter during my birthday week. I also got to take my granddaughter and step-daughter to aerial yoga in trees, which we’ve been trying to schedule for some time! I’m grateful to be able to maintain my health and fitness level because without these most other aspects of life either aren’t possible or become much more difficult! On a side note, as I added these pictures I began to think that I look adventurous but quit frankly I am not! I do like to try new things and have new experiences but would never define myself as adventurous! Remember…You’re never too old! It’s never too late! I’m grateful my body continues to allow me to enjoy activities outdoors with those I love!

I don’t like roller coasters at all but I do want to live life in the FRONT ROW!

Grateful to Wake Up and Go to a Job I Love

There is no denying that this is potentially the absolute most difficult year of my professional career, which started in 1984. As educators, we thought the last year and a half was difficult but I knew that returning after not having been in school for a year and half would be more of a challenge! I was undoubtedly correct although I sure wish I would have been wrong! However, I still find myself happy to get up and go to work supporting teachers and the most challenged students across my district. I am thankful and grateful to do what I know I am here to do and am definitely living my purpose! Each day at work I continue to be able to find glimmers of joy and pride in our staff and our district and fun interacting with children! It’s really all about the kids! They say the darnedest things which usually cause me to laugh! I view the kids with the most difficult behaviors as a puzzle to be solved not a problem to be removed and delight when I can help a teacher or team help their student/s! On a side note, going to work every day gives me reason and pleasure to dress up!

My “Pearls” Look

Organza Sleeve Top

Plaid Pants

During a recent student observation in a kindergarten classroom, the sweetest little girl said, “Excuse me! You’re so pretty and I love all of your pretty jewelry especially the pearls! When is snack?” What kindergartener knows her gem stones? She’s definitely a little fashionista in the making!

My “Rich Girl/Lady” Look

Leopard Print Pants

Suede Moto Jacket

While in a lunchroom of fourth and fifth graders, a student approached me from behind and tapped on my shoulder. She said to me, “From behind you look like a rich girl!” As she looked at me head on she clarified and stated, “I mean lady!” Once she saw my face, she realized I was too old to be a girl! LOL!

Apparently, My Super Hero Look Alike!

Lastly, I was observing a first grade boy who mostly like has Autism. After spending the afternoon with him, he told me that I reminded him of ghost spider especially my hair! You see he’s a huge fan of Marvel super heroes! Apparently, ghost spider is an archenemy of Spiderman, which is one of his favorites. You know I had to Google ghost spider. Here she is…do you see the resemblance?

Eternally Grateful for MY LOVE

Camo Puffy Vest

Mix Media Sweater

Chaser AC/DC – Stacked Animal Recycled Vintage Jersey Rolled Short Sleeve Tee

Tie-Dye Top

It goes without saying that I’m grateful and thankful for the love of my life…my one true love! I know that some people search for this type of love for a lifetime. Therefore, it’s a gift to know, to be loved and to love each and everyday for the past 34 plus years! Like all couples we have our daily challenges and our ups and downs but when it comes down to it, he’ll always be the one I want by my side! As we’ve dealt with and continue to deal with some medical challenges for Len I’ve been reminded that it’s the little things that are really the big things worthy of being celebrated! I’m reminded that each day brings with it a new opportunity, a fresh start, and great things ahead! We have each other, our love and our daily fun and laughter for which my heart is full of gratitude!

So there you have it: friends, family, health and a daily purpose fulfill me and provide me with endless gratitude and thankfulness each and every day of the year!

Please know that I include each and everyone of you in my list of gratitudes! I appreciate your kind words and comments along with your daily support and encouragement both here and on the blog and on the social media platforms! Sharing my love of all things fashion with you brings me great joy and gratitude! I’ve met so many wonderful women both virtually and in person! Your friendship motivates and fills me with joy!

Fashion Trends and Friends wishes you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving Holiday!

Stylish Monday and Link Up Party

Faux Leather Looks – November 2021 Part 2 of 2

The faux leather trend is going strong and doesn’t show any signs of going away especially now that you can find faux leather in almost any color! You can wear it casually – think joggers, make it edgy or fancy it up! You know that I love all of those! I’ve already shared all of my faux leather wardrobe with you in my blog post titled Faux Leather Weather. You can see that blog post HERE. Since that blog post, I’ve already added two more fun pieces to my closet so of course I want to share them with you.

Faux Leather Jumper

Does this ever happen to you? You’re walking through a store for one reason and something grabs your eye. The next thing you know is that you’re in the fitting room and making a purchase you had no plan prior to seeing it? I’m sure I’m not the only one. That’s the case with this jumper and striped puffy sleeved turtleneck. It can easily be paired with any color and style of top. Since I’m tall (5’8″), I opted to wear it over leggings. I was really feeling this look and felt so fall trendy and fun! Fashion is always an emotional connection for me!

SHOP FAUX LEATHER DRESSES

Faux Leather and Suede Pink Jacket

I spotted this jacket at the same time I spotted the jumper. I wasn’t looking to add another jacket to my wardrobe put when you spot the cutest pink one it’s hard to say no. I managed walking away in the moment; and then I couldn’t stop thinking about it – styling it over and over and over again in my head! The jacket went on sale plus I had a coupon so I ordered it on line. Sold! I paired it with my newest Hard Rock Cafe graphic tee, distressed jeans and added my matching faux suede boots! Voila! This is the perfect weekend look for running errands, going out to lunch or a movie or shopping.

Faux Leather and Suede Styling by Stylish Friends
From Around the World

Nina – Sharing a Journey – “I love a little faux leather and suede in the fall!  There are so many options!  When I saw Spanx new faux suede flairs, I had to have a pair–get styling tips on how to create a few fresh looks with faux leather and suede..”

Nancy –  Nancy’s Fashion Style – “I love to wear faux leather. Back in the days I used to wear a lot of real leather, it’s not my thing anymore. The only downside with faux leather is that we have a white leather couch, that doesn’t work very well together. So sadly I can only wear faux leather when I go out!”

Nicole – High Latitude Style – ‘I found these pink faux leather booties at Value Village two years ago. Of course, the color and zipper details called my name. Despite they got a lot of wear in the long Interior Alaska winters, they still look like new.”

Shelbee – Shelbee on the Edge – “I always love the edginess that leather can add to any outfit. I recently spotted these wide legged faux leather trousers in Charlotte Russe for a mere $15. I liked them so much that I also bought them in black and now I have all sorts of sassy styling ideas rolling through my mind.”

Lucy – Lucy Bertoldi.com  “I adore faux-leather and all the styling possibilities that go along with it!  Today’s outfit is a perfect example of how you can mix colors to obtain a look that flows, just by having the fabric as the element that pulls it all together. Faux-leather is master at accomplishing this- even with colors that you wouldn’t necessarily think of styling together!”

Amy – Amy’s Creative Pursuits –  “I love to change the look of a dress with a lightweight jacket like this faux suede one from Stitch Fix.”

Ada – Elegance and Mommyhood  “Faux Leather has been trending for the past decade – as long as I have been a mother pretty much. And speaking of mothers, my layered look today is very cool and put together for a busy mom with little ones, that’s me. The star of the show is this Pinot Noir Faux Leather Moto Jacket with a built-in grey sweatshirt hoodie. How cool is that?! More faux leather comes via the chic shoes that can pass both as sneakers and as oxfords. Both of these leather pieces are 2 of the 5 items I purchased this Summer during the NSale.”

Joy –   Joyous Styling  “Faux Leather Shacket styled EXTRA! Embossed leggings and sequin booties add a touch of unexpected glamour.. my sleeveless turtleneck has ruching and is a closet mainstay.”

Western Wear Trend – Fall 2021

Five Ways to Incorporate Western Wear Trends into Your Wardrobe…Start with Cowgirl Boots

The western wear style of this season is equipped with fringe, cow print, straight-cut jeans, and prairie dresses. Classic western elements marry modern looks with a western flare. Grab some suededenim, and cow spotted fabric, and get ready to get inspired. I must admit that I’m stepping into this trend lightly. I do love and own many fringed items and love all things faux leather, faux suede and straight-cut jeans. (To see a previous blog post on the faux leather trend, click HERE.) Prairie dresses aren’t for me…I don’t think. I am always open to try new things but I’m currently taking a pass on this trend. I’ve heard many refer to it as “The Little House on the Prairie” Look. However, I’ve seen it look so cute on some. In order to dabble in this trend, I purchased some cowgirl boots! My first pair and I LOVE them! Corral Women’s White Glitter Inlay & Crystals White Cowgirl Boots

Look 1: Cowgirl Boots, Color Block Flannel and Shorts

One of my favorite fall activities that is an absolute must do for me is going to the local pumpkin farm: Sugar Grove Pumpkin Farm. They have the absolute cutest set up! This year I met the owner Mikaya; and she was so friendly and of course welcoming. If you live in my area, add this location to your must visits in the fall. Now onto what I wore to the pumpkin farm. The weather was absolutely beautiful! It was one of those sunny, warm with a slight breeze fall days that allowed me to wear my ombre denim shorts. Flannel is an easy match with all things denim and gives off a western vibe! This color blocked flannel seemed like the perfect top accessorized by my statement necklace and blinged out cowgirl belt!

Look 2: Cowgirl Boots, Jeans, Skull Tank

Pairing my cowgirl boots with black jeans, my lace skull tank and lace zip up cardigan for a Halloween Western Vibe is look 2. This seemed liked a fun look for the Halloween season and gave me another reason to wear my boots! I’ve had these pieces in my closet for quit some time.

Look 3: Cowgirl Boots, Denim Dress and Jacket

This denim dress is new along with my boots! The frayed hem at the bottom and on the cuff of the sleeves along with the faded denim adds some interest. The oversized fit is great for covering any midsection flaws although I felt as though it was a lot of material so I opted to layer on my jacket and belt it to give a more defined midsection. Initially, I thought the dress might be too short as I’ve mentioned before I’m tall (5’8″). As long I didn’t bend over, I was fine. To complete the look, I added the same statement necklace that I’m wearing in the pictures with my shorts and flannel. Additionally, I like to pop my collar. (It’s a style trick/tip to flatter you neck. To see a blog post on popping up your collar, click HERE.) I can envison layering this dress over leggings in the winter and even adding a sweater over the dress. How would you style this denim dress and boots?

Look 4: A Shacket, Jeans, Graphic T-Shirt and Cowgirl Boots

The shacket trend is going strong this fall/winter season! This yellow shacket with the fringe detail pockets grabbed my attention immediately when Mr. FTF and I were on our annual fall get away to Saugatuck, MI. (To see a previous blog about the shacket trend, click HERE.) One of my favorite stores to show while there is Glik’s, which sadly isn’t in my neck of the woods. Did I need another shacket? Of course I didn’t but the fringetastic pocket detail and yellow sold me. Pairing it with this “Stay Wild” t-shirt and adding my blingtastic cowgirl belt completed my look! I ordered the t-shirt from Sikeology although I did see it in Holland, MI. It was one of those “wish I would have gotten it moments” so I had to search the Internet or it. The black 7 for All Mankind jeans have been in my closet for several years. Along with my rhinestone cowgirl belt, I added some rhinestone earrings and necklace…just call me Rhinestone Cowgirl!

Look 5: Shelbee on the Edge

You’ll recognize Shelbee from my monthly participation and collaboration for Stylish Monday’s and Link Up Party. Here’s how Shelbee styled her new white cowgirl boots!

I have been obsessed with cowgirl boots and western styles for as long as I can remember. The vibe goes perfectly with my wild bohemian soul. Back in August, I randomly bought a $1 scratch off lottery ticket after a particularly bad weekend and I won $5,000! After using most of the money wisely, I did treat myself to a new pair of cowgirl boots. I have been wanting a white pair and when Julie mentioned she was also in the market for white cowgirl boots, it was just the nudge I needed to go for it. This is my 10th pair of cowgirl boots in my ever growing collection and I took them out for their inaugural spin on a girl date. You can read about that fun experience on my blog.

Shelbee – Shelbee on the Edge

Let’s Chat

I had hoped to publish this blog the Thursday before Halloween hence many of the pictures have a Halloween/Fall vibe. Life happens and delayed this publishing but regardless of the backgrounds in the pictures you’ll still get the idea of the many styling options for a little or a lot of western wear. Fashion Trends and Friends does hope you had a wonderful Halloween Weekend!

Hopefully you’ve gotten some inspiration for adding to or incorporating a western wear look! A friendly reminder to always have fun and wear all the things that you love, that brings you joy and happiness and you’ll look terrific! Do you already own cowgirl boots? Time to pull them out and rock them!

Fall Fashion Trends for Millennials and Mid-Lifers

Fall Fashion Favorites 2021

This is our fourth consecutive year of showing how mid-lifers don’t have to limit their thinking, styling or favorite shopping spots based on age! If you’re new to Fashion Trends and Friends, this is the premise and purpose behind our blog and why we first got started. We believe that no matter your age or your size you can be cute and trendy if that is important to you. To prove my point, I have been working with my favorite millennial Brittany for the past four years collaborating on this Fall Fashion Trend blog. Brittany picks out some current trends that she’s loving as a (currently) 26 year old; and I purchase the same or very similar outfit as a (currently) 60 year old. We put our own spin on the styling, which is often very similar and share our love of fashion no matter our ages and sizes! It is my hope that we inspire you to broaden your thinking and that you don’t limit yourself!

The Past Three Years

2018

Our very first collaboration was in 2018. Brittany chose this fall vest, which I still have in my closet and am still wearing! You can still get this vest and it comes in eight colors! It looks great open as Brittany styled it or belted as I styled it to give my waistline more definition. To see our first collaboration post, click HERE. To shop the vest, click HERE.

2019

In 2019, Brittany chose jumpsuits, which continue to trend and are super easy to style. While we don’t have identical jumpsuits on, we’re showing that the trend can be worn and styled no matter your age. Brittany’s jumpsuit is strapless and mine can easily be worn as a cold shoulder or I could wear a bralette underneath or a tank. Mine has an elastic waist and I added the belt for some interest and matching accessories. Accessories are a must in my styling book and always complete and elevate a look! Jumpsuits also continue to trend! To see our blog post from 2019, click HERE. To shop my jumpsuit (it comes in 31 colors and pattern choices), click HERE.

2020

One of Brittany’s favorite places to shop is Lime Lush. This is not a website I typically think of shopping but every time Brittany reminds me I can find really cute things. One of our looks last year was this cold should sweater by Lime Lush. The camel color and turtle neck are perfect for fall. The cold shoulder trend continues and we’ll show you that the new spin is having one cold shoulder. Brittany elected to leave her sweater untucked; and my preference was a half tuck. I added leopard accessories and Brittany chose gold. To see the blog post from 2020, click HERE. This exact sweater is no longer available, but here is a similar sweater.

This Year’s Fall Favorites – 2021

Look 1: Dresses

This year’s trends starts with what I’m calling “Pumpkin Spice” dresses! The color really screams fall! Both dresses give definition at the waist. Brittany’s ties and my has elastic. I loved the tiered skirt on mine, which is currently on trend. We both choice our over the knee boots. I opted for black and gold accessories and Brittany chose a more neutral palette. Both dress are from Lime Lush: My Dress – Rust Orange Tiered Ruffle Satin Short Dress (it also comes in wine red and forest green). I did size up 1 to ensure the length was slightly longer and it fits perfect. For reference I’m 5’8″. Brittany’s Dress – Pumpkin Long Sleeve Surplice Wrap Satin Dress. Over the knee boot similar to mine can be found: HERE.

Look 2: Black and White

Originally Brittany had chosen a black and white flannel similar to what I’m wearing, which I ordered. It was too small in the chest area and the buttons pulled. This is often a problem for me as a larger chested gal. I returned it but Brittany kept hers. I ordered a different brand and sized up for an oversized look and almost a shacket feel. Plus I wanted to be able to wear it over a tank or a tee. (To see last week’s blog on shackets, click HERE.) We decided to show you two different but complimentary looks. Brittany’s classic cream colored cable knit sweater pairs perfectly with jeans – both blue and black. She paired it with her cute cream colored booties. To shop Brittany’s sweater: Cream Cable Knit Lightweight Sweater With Ribbed Turtleneck

My black and white checked flannel will be so simple to style so many ways. It’s a wardrobe classic just like Brittany’s cable knit sweater. I’m thinking I might do a blog post on how to style this flannel up and down to show it’s versatility! This faux leather skirt was first shared with you in the blog titled Faux Leather Weather. To see the blog post, click HERE. I kept on my over the knee boots and added some statement jewelry pieces to fancy up the look! The flannel is rather long so I tied it at the waist to give more definition. To shop this flannel (it comes in 45 color choices), click HERE.

Look 3: One Shoulder Sweater

Bare shoulder sweaters continue to trend. This year you’ll see a lot of one bare shoulder options. Brittany chose this beautiful rich forest green color, which is perfect for fall and will look great for the holidays. I opted for a similar style but with a buckle accent and leopard and cream print. I added my leopard accessories – booties and earrings and cuff by LD Watkins Design. (To see a blog post about LD Watkins Design, click HERE.) To shop Brittany’s sweater – Forest Green Mock Neck Cold Shoulder Top To shop my sweater – Cream And Camel Leopard Lightweight Crochet Knit Sweater (I sized up 1 for a looser fit.) On a side note, it was super windy this day hence my hair, earrings and shoulder strap are all flapping in the wind!

Look 4: Striped Bare Shoulder Fall Sweater

Here is our Matchy Matchy look for 2021! We always like to get at least one item that is identical and share how we’d style it as well as prove that age doesn’t matter! I think it also disproves the myth that you shouldn’t wear vertical stripes as they make you look wider. This sweater has more of a color blocking feel to me than stripes. I particularly like that the top has some type of elastic that keeps it up and in place. Additionally, you can pull up one side to give a more one shoulder look. Brittany chose to keep it untucked. I prefer it half tucked. It was the perfect sweater for going on a date night to see Paranormal Cirque de Sol later that night with my hubby! To shop our matching sweater – Black Striped Off Shoulder Long Sleeve Sweater

Brittany and I are both girlie girls! We share the same passion for all things fashion and beauty so I couldn’t close out this blog post without sharing our fall manicures with you!

After our fall fashion trends millennial mid-lifer photo shoot, we finally had the opportunity to go out to lunch together! We’ve been meaning to do this for years but our busy schedules have gotten in the way so this was a real treat for both of us so a lunch date selfie was a must!

Later that evening…headed out in my off shoulder sweater with Mr. FTF for dinner and Paranormal Cirque de Sol!

Stylish Monday and Link Up Party – October 2021

Fall Trend Shacket Styling

This Monday’s styling theme is shackets and my fabulously fashionable friends from around the world and I are excited to share our spin on this hot fall and winter trend! What is a shacket you ask? The shacket is a combination shirt and jacket—that can be worn as both. Most shackets have the silhouette and details of a traditional button-down shirt (one or two chest pockets, buttons along the front and a classic collar), but are made of thicker material more like an actual jacket. Usually done up in flannel, cotton canvas or denim, they sometimes incorporate military details like epaulettes on the shoulders. If there are also pockets on the lower half, you may see it referred to as a chore jacket.

Take inspiration from ‘90s grunge and wear one open over a floral midi dress and trendy combat boots. Or go for a more tailored approach and button one up over a pair of skinny jeans and pointy-toe ankle boots. Even better if you add a waist-cinching belt. Shackets have long been applauded as a spectacular layering piece, but they’ve recently become even more popular.

Shacket 1

This is my newest shacket; and I was attracted to it because of the color and the pockets! I love shackets for the warm and ease of styling. I opted to pair this particular shacket with my newest graphic tee (neon pink and yellow) and high top sneakers (yellow and leopard accents) adding leopard accessories (belt, earrings and cuff). It’s a super comfy and casual look perfect for weekends hanging out, running errands or doing outdoor fun fall things! If you want to give a trend a try, you don’t need to spend a lot and of course a shacket can easily be paired with what you already have in your wardrobe. The loose fit keeps it comfortable and hides any midsection flaws.Where would you wear this look?

Shacket: Amazon. Def Leopard
T-Shirt: Shop the Willow Tree
Distressed Jeans: My Closet High
Top Sneakers: Macy’s

Shacket 2

This particular shacket is super long compared to others, which being 5′ 8 ” I really like the added length. Since it’s longer, it’s easier to wear with leggings because my backside is well covered. It was purchased last fall when the trend was just hitting the stores. I purchased it a local boutique: Flair on Third. Since the shacket is enough of a statement on it’s own, I styled it with a monochromatic (all black) top and leggings. Add some accessories because you know my thoughts on accessories, they complete a look and you’re good to go. This is super simple styling at it’s best.

Shacket: Flair on Third Black
Long Sleeved T-Shirt: My Closet
Leggings: Spanx Fur
Lined Booties: My Closet

Shacket 3

This shacket was also purchased last spring. It might be my favorite of all of them that I own. The details of the collar and cut plus the belt make it a more tailored option and it feels dressier than the others. Similar to the styling of shacket #3, I wore a light weight long sleeved black sweater and my leggings in order to make the shacket the focal point in the look. Too elongate my legs and create a more slimming effect I could have worn black boots. I’ve heard some influencers comment that the shacket trend isn’t for them because it’s too boxy. Adding a belt is a way to solve for that complaint. However, I’d also like to acknowledge that not all trends or for everyone. My recommendation is to always give new things a try but stay true to what you love and feel confident wearing!

Shacket 4

I call this look my lumbar jack look! Some times I will style a look around a particular item. In this case, I wanted to create a look around my Ceclia of New York boots. They’re navy blue with red and white shoe strings and blue fur. I actually won them several years ago. I’be been wanting to give axe throwing a try. Does that surprise you? If I go, this might be the perfect outfit for the adventure! Where would you wear this look?

Shacket Styling by Stylish Friends

From Around the World

Amy – Amy’s Creative Pursuits –  “I never thought I would like shackets because I don’t like the over-sized look on my body type, but this cute one from Amazon is over-sized in length, and not so much in width, so it gives a more fitted, polished look.”

Nicole – High Latitude Style – “While shackets are an Alaskan favorite, I have owned only two shackets so far. The first shacket was the classic Buffalo plaid skirt in red with black. I used to wear it for snow shoveling in late spring and early winter (late September, first week of October). The second one was a DIY patching project. I had bought the piece as a shirt, but it was too stiff to be worn as such. Therefore, I patched it to turn it into a shacket. I still wear it in late spring and early fall as cover-up when a cotton cardigan would be too cold and a jacket would be still too warm. Given that in Alaska the transition seasons are very short (2-4 weeks), I don’t get much wear out of my shacket.”

Shelbee – Shelbee on the Edge – “When shackets started trending last fall, I wanted to try out the trend without spending too much money. So I hit the thrift shops and found this olive green corduroy shirt jacket that is quickly becoming an autumn wardrobe staple.”

Nina – Sharing a Journey -“Is the shacket trend for you? Learn what it is,how to get the look for yourself, and a few styling tips to make the shacket your own.”

Lucy – Lucy Bertoldi.com  “October’s sombre vibes has me styling up this sheer, black ‘shacket’ which I love wearing over tanks or sleeveless outfits; like this tulle dress for example. It’s perfectly light, chic and edgy- whether it’s worn as a shirt, or jacket.”

FAUX LEATHER WEATHER – Trends 2021

5 Faux Leather Trends to Add to Your Wardrobe

The faux leather trend is continuing strong into the fall and winter! Additionally, you can find faux leather in a multitude of colors and clothing options. Neutral colors like black, caramel and wheat will guarantee an elevated feel when buying into this trend and will be in your wardrobe for years to come. The best part about investing in this faux leather trend is the versatility of owning multiple leather pieces. You can, of course, style them together for a runway-informed look. On other occasions, break the pieces up for a myriad of outfits that range from elegant to casual and everything in between. There are no limitations on the amount of faux leather you can wear in an outfit. You can have a touch of faux leather … think sleeves of a top or a full on faux leather look from head to toe. You can decide the amount and look you want to achieve. Isn’t fashion so fun?!

FAUX LEATHER WEATHER OUTFITS

Here are some outfits to inspire your fall and winter wardrobe.  Keep in mind that if you want to try out this trend you can start on a smaller scale with touches of faux leather. Or you go bold with faux leather looks from head to toe. If you wear what you love and feel confident, you’ll always look amazing!

1. Faux Leather Shorts

This outfit was originally shared on a blog post on how to style graphic t-shirts – in particular this t-shirt 10 different ways. You can also see the three different shoe options change the look and feel each time. This is an easy way to change the overall vibe of your look to fit the event. To see the previous blog post, click HERE. Faux leather shorts pair easily with any graphic t-shirt!

These faux leather shorts were added to my wardrobe last fall and I find myself wearing them even more this year! No matter your climate, faux leather shorts can be perfect for warmer climates as well as cooler/cold climates. In Illinois, I can wear them with bare legs while we still have warmer temps and as it cools off and becomes colder I’ll simply add wearing the faux leather shorts over tights. The beauty of faux leather shorts is that they can easily be dressed up or dressed down, worn with heels or worn with sneakers. You get the idea – the styling options are endless!

This first look I wore to a dinner party with five other couples. We get together with for dinner. The faux leather shorts are easily dressed up with this blouse, which is a rich purple with white and shimmer accents so it seemed fitting to add my silver metallic sandals!

Metallic Ruffle Wrap Front Peplum Top: Express
Faux Leather Shorts: My Closet
Metallic Silver Sandals: My Closet

The second look is more sassy and kind of bad assy appropriate for a night on the town! The top has puffy faux leather sleeves and the booties are trimmed with metal accents! I got the top last year but it’s available again this year! Accessories always complete the look; and I opted for some statement rhinestone pieces.

As the weather cools off, you can add tights and a sweater. This look is easily put together and super comfortable. The embellished combat boots, which have been in my closet for quit some time but are still trending complete the look!

This look was actually worn a year ago when Mr. FTF and I went out to celebrate our anniversary. Similar to the first look I wore a blouse with sheer leopard print sleeves and my leopard print sandals. Our anniversary is in September so it’s still usually warm enough to go bare legged. We celebrated at our favorite restaurant and did a drive by the church we were married in.

Last winter I shared numerous ways to style this buffalo plaid flannel shirt including pairing it with my faux leather shorts giving it a winter/holiday vibe. The buffalo plaid pumps along with my statement necklace make this look feel dressier. You could easily wear over the knee boots as well.

2. Faux Leather Tops

Above I’m wearing a top that has faux leather puffy sleeves – two trends in one! I also paired this top with these plaid pants with side stripes. The tuxedo stripes are olive and cobalt blue both with shimmer. The cobalt metallic boots pull out the color in the side stripe and add a pop of color. In hind side, I might not pair this together again. What do you think? This top is easily worn with jeans’ and I think I’m going to pair it with my faux leather skirt (shown below) at some point.

If your really feeling this trend, you can get a completely faux leather top. I particularly like it because it’s actually pretty warm and very comfortable. It pairs with almost anything similar to the shorts and the top with faux leather sleeves. You can easily dress it up as I did with these shimmery leopard pants or wear it with jeans, skirts, etc. One tip I would add is consider sizing. I don’t particularly like super clingy things nor do I think it’s always figure flattering. Therefore, you might want to size up for a more flattering look. It will really depend on the cut of the top.

3. Faux Leather Pants

Faux leather joggers are seriously one of my most favorite pair of pants that I own! I purchased them last year and found myself wanting to wear them almost every single day! There’s not a single thing you can’t wear with them! They are super comfy and easy to throw on and look polished. Additionally, I have a pair of black faux leather pants and a pair of cropped pants with a high waist. Faux leather comes in many color choices. Last year, I added these cream colored cropped pants and love the comfort and fit!

Faux suede jackets or faux leather bomber jackets are an easy layer to throw on for some warmth during cooler fall evenings. This leopard cami and leopard booties are an easy match with the joggers. A perfect fall look for doing almost anything!

The minute I saw this sweater with the various animal prints and colors I knew I had to have it! Joggers pair great with sweaters, cardigans and dusters! You probably recognize the boots from one of my shorts looks above!

This leopard print cami is different from most as it’s olive colored, which is a trend color this fall although it’s been in my closet for quit awhile! The faux leather fringe jacket on the right has also been in my closet for a long time. I purchased it at Chico’s many years ago. While the joggers are newer and trending, they will pair great with many items you already have! It can be easy to incorporate a new trend with your existing items if that’s important to you! The lug heeled boots started trending last year and continue to trend this year.

These faux leather pants are not quit as comfortable as the joggers probably because they are more fitted but I think they look great! Similar to the joggers they pair with almost anything – sweaters, blouses, faux fur, graphic t-shirts! I’ve had these for a couple of years now. The pink trim on this faux fur leopard jacket was what sold me on this jacket, which I also got several years ago. If you’ve been following me, you know I like unique one of kind pieces! The pale pink booties are by Cecelia of New York.

These high waisted cropped faux leather pants enable me to hold my middle section in and show off whatever shoe or boot I’m wearing! Since I love to be matchy matchy, I played off of the snakeskin print trim on the blouse by adding my snakeskin print belt and boots with snakeskin print heels! Voila! I wore this look to work.

The cropped faux leather pants dress up easily by adding any type of sparkly top and shoes as shown here! This is a great holiday look. The sparkly sequin sleeves of the top, the glitter belt and glitter heels on the boots give the whole look a festive vibe!

Faux leather isn’t only black! I’ve noticed a lot of really pretty shades of brown, cream, rust and even other brighter colors! These cream colored faux leather cropped pants are super comfy and easily dressed up by adding something sparkly for the holidays or worn with a classic fair isle sweater and cream colored boots!

SHOP FAUX LEATHER PANTS

4. Faux Leather Moto Jacket

A faux leather moto jacket or any faux leather jacket are so easy to add to any look both for warmth and style and fun! The best part is that they aren’t limited to just black although black is a good place to start and can easily become a wardrobe stable! This black moto jacket with studs has been in my closet for many years. I still reach for it when I want an edgy look. Faux leather leggings are another way to add the trend and can literally be worn with everything!

One of my favorite colors to wear is yellow – all shades of yellow! This mustard yellow moto jacket is perfect for fall. It’s a tad too big on me now but I think I can still pull it off especially over bulkier items like sweaters.

This faux leather red moto jacket with silver studs might be one of my favorites! Moto jackets are timeless and will remain in my wardrobe for a good long time!

SHOP FAUX LEATHER MOTO JACKETS

5. Faux Leather Skirt

This faux leather skirt is one of my most recent purchases and to say that I LOVE it is an understatement! Similar to the shorts, I think it’s going to be so cute with so many looks – sweaters, graphic t-shirts, sparkly tops…I’m excited to keep wearing it and styling it! I wore it to work with this multi animal print top and my snakeskin print sandals. Had to show you the back of the top with the fun opening! I initially bought the skirt in my size, which was kind of short and a little more snug than I like. Sizing up one was the trick giving me some extra length and a more flattering look! Tip: Don’t get caught up in the size or number! Sometimes I get to size down; and sometimes I need to size up for the most flattering look on my body! This is not uncommon depending on the maker and the cut. The skirt also comes in a beautiful cognac color!

Why You Should Take a Girl’s Vacation

Girl’s 60th Birthday Road Trip: Lori, me, Annie and Lynn

Part 2 – Grand Haven, Michigan

Did you catch my blog post about my girl’s trip to Palm Springs, California (Part 1 of 2)? To read that post, click HERE. To recap the research on why it’s a great idea and the benefits:

long term happiness

improved mental health

critically important as we age

increased longevity

and I’d add just plain FUN, JOY and LAUGHTER!

This particular trip was with my closest college friends! We met our freshman year in Stevenson North (dorm) at Northern Illinois University August 1979. We became roommates our junior and senior year! I’m blessed to call them my forever friends. Similar to my grade school/high school friends, we’ve been by each other’s sides for all the good times and all the challenging times – when necessary, we send up smoke signals and circle up with support! With the exception of Annie, who lives in California, I see Lynn and Lori regularly as we live in relative close proximity. Our get togethers are usually marathons spanning an entire day of eating, drinking, laughing, shopping, etc. So getting to spend uninterrupted quality time all together on our trip was such a wonderful gift. Many zoom meetings and researching destinations went into planning our final destination.

Celebrating Our 50th Birthday Ten Years Ago

We took our first celebratory trip ten years ago to celebrate turning 50! First, we flew into the Hamptons and spent several days there. Then we went on to New York City for the remainder of our trip. In preparation for this post, I took a trip down memory lane and pulled out my photo albums. I don’t recall if I took the pictures with a camera (which I think I did) or used my phone and sent them to be printed. My how the times have changed but our friendship hasn’t and has stood the test of time! We are FOREVER FRIENDS!

Here’s a couple of pictures from that trip, which we still reminisce about and laugh about today! There were quit a few “moments” that have become classics in our memories! We did all the touristy type things!

Celebrating Our 60th Birthdays

Road Trip to Grand Haven

We left from Lori’s house on a Friday. Most of that day was spent driving as there was quit a bit of traffic and construction on the way up. Despite the longer ride, we had lots of fun singing to our old disco tunes, laughing and getting caught up! We are never at a shortage for conversations! There might have been quit a few bathroom pit stops along the way! LOL Once we got checked into our hotel we headed out to find a spot to eat. We totally lucked out with Snug Harbor. We got right in and had a beautiful view!

Snug Harbor Grand Haven, Michigan

There is great walking along the river and a large band shell. We were thrilled to find live music that night! The locals were super friendly and offered us suggestions on what to do, where to eat and what to see.

The band was good and the people watching was great! It totally felt like a slice of Americana and summer! Kids and parents alike were dancing and enjoying themselves. We even saw kids flipping into the lake! Boats sailed by and the sunset was beautiful! The end to a fabulous day one together!

Day Two

Right outside of our hotel was a walking, running, biking path. So we headed out in the morning to get our walk in before we went out for the day. We tried to identify activities that we all enjoy and the days that the weather was suppose to cooperate with said plans. We decided the second day would be our day of shopping and our official birthday dinner out in our 60th finery! Downtown Grand Haven had many shops and eateries.

Morning Walks

Morning Walk

The path lead along the river, which provided beautiful scenery including the gorgeous homes, boats and landscaping! The hydrangeas were so vibrant and colorful!

Shopping

Any day is a good day for the perfect outfit in my opinion! You know we had to stop and take a picture by this sign!
This sign cracked me up so of course I had to get a picture of it! Although Mr. FTF is a good trooper when it comes to carrying my bags for me!

Celebrating

We wanted to find a restaurant that was high energy and a lot of fun the night we went out in our 60th birthday tiaras, sashes and glasses. We did some pre-celebrating, dancing, laughing and drinking in our rooms prior to heading out as well as a photo shoot before the storm blew in and almost blew us away!

Lori gifted each of us these fun Vintage 1961 glasses! We used them to get the party started!
Vintage 1961 Glasses

Everyone we encountered was super friendly and always wished us a happy birthday! We received so many compliments and well wishes! The girl in this picture was vacationing from Texas. She was loving on us big time!

The Grand Haven Musical Fountain is a synchronized display of water and lights in Grand Haven, Michigan located on Dewey Hill on the north shore of the Grand River, not far from the Grand’s mouth at Lake Michigan and Grand Haven State Park. Shows run nightly from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Each night is a different theme. It was the perfect way to end our evening!

Day Three

Rosy Mound Natural Area

This was definitely Annie’s happy place! Rosy Mound is a classic Great Lakes dune area including high wooded dunes, wooden walkways, and beach access. A .7 mile (one way) hiking trail from the parking area to the Lake Michigan shoreline includes 1,000 feet of stairs up and down the dunes, scenic views of the woods, and Lake Michigan. Believe me when I tell you it was A LOT of stairs! This was truly a beautiful park and a perfect weather day for a hike!

It was easier for me to take two stairs at a time and run/jog when going up!

Love Lynn’s expression regarding all of the stairs we did! She was sure her watch was wrong in calculating the steps/miles we put in that day! LOL

On our hike back, we were stopped by the nicest man. He directed us to take a different return route in order to see the redwood pines and the sun shining through! It was spectacular! Grateful he told us about it or we probably would have missed it! The pictures don’t do it justice! It was so peaceful and serene! For some reason, it reminded me of the bamboo forests in Maui – same feeling of serenity and peace!

Grand Haven State Park and Beach

After our hike, we put on our swimsuits, packed up some drinks and snacks, and headed to the beach for some sun and fun! Grand Haven State Park has a beautiful sandy shore on Lake Michigan along the west side of the park and the Grand River along the north side of the park. The park consists entirely of beach sand and provides scenic views of Lake Michigan and the Grand Haven pier and lighthouse.

Lori gave me this book as part of my birthday present. We had fun reading some of the affirmations and facts while sunning on the beach!

Doesn’t everyone wear their rhinestone encrusted 60 glasses on the beach? Why not? We do!

We tried to eat dinner at Noto’s at the Bil-Mar. Both the inside and the outside dining looked really great. Due to Covid, most places were short workers. As a result, their waiting list was full until they closed that evening plus they had an event going on inside. We ended up driving around trying to find someplace to eat. We landed at Porto Bello. It didn’t really matter where we ended up as we still had a good time! We went for a few drinks at Tip a Few before heading back to our hotel where we hung out together and continued our conversations…we’re never at a loss for things to chat about!

Last Day ~ Heading Home

We slept in a little before we grabbed breakfast, packed up the car and headed out. We had decided that we were going to stop downtown Grand Haven for one super quick shopping stop and some smoothies at Jumpin Java Coffee House. Their Very Berry smoothie is absolutely DELICIOUS!!! The four of us highly recommend it!

Us our junior year in college! That was THEN!
Us today! This is NOW!

Lynn’s shirt sums up our trip and our friendship: “The Best is Yet to Come”! We may all be 60 but we still have lots of living, lots of fun and lots of adventures in our future! Always remember: You’re never too old! It’s never too late! So grateful for these wonderful women and can’t imagine my life without them in it! Looking forward to our 70th Birthday Celebration Trip! Where should we go? Maybe we should start going away together more often … like our 65th might be fun!
