Denim for Days

A good pair of jeans is essential for any wardrobe. The problem is that it can be overwhelming to find the best-fitting jeans, especially for your body type. I’m here to get rid of that overwhelming feeling and help you find the perfect jeans, as well as where to shop for them! This post is for anyone who:

  • Struggles to find the right jeans for their body shape
  • Wants to learn more about different denim styles and fits (as well as current trends)
  • Struggles to find good quality jeans

Type of Jean Fits

For the purpose of this post, I will be focusing on the 6 most common denim fits such as Skinny, Straight, Wide Leg, Relaxed (Boyfriend), Bootcut and Flare. Below, you’ll find detailed descriptions of each jean fits to help you make more informed purchasing decisions going forward.

Skinny Jeans

  • Body-hugging
  • Fits snuggly through the hip, thigh and hem
  • Pencil silhouette
  • Made with stretch for comfortability and flattering fit

Straight Jeans

  • Clean lines – perfect to wear from day to night
  • Straight from the hip and thigh to hem
  • Relaxed fit through hip and thigh
  • Some styles have a taper
  • A great alternative to skinny jeans

Wide Leg Jeans

  • Loose and comfortable fit in comparison to other jeans
  • Available in straighter cuts or can get wider from the knee to hem

Relaxed – Boyfriend Jeans

  • Loose fit jeans
  • Straight in the hip and thigh
  • Baggy cut that sits low on the hips
  • Available in a slim fit, an alternative to the classic boyfriend style

Bootcut Jeans

  • Slim in the hip and thighs, widens below the knee
  • Flared at the hem

Flared Jeans

  • Similar cut to boyfriend jeans – fitted at hips and thigh
  • Wider flare from the knee down
  • Available in cropped kick flare styles to wide flare cropped jeans
  • Flare styles vary from narrow to wide bell bottom styles for a slight seventies take.

Jean Styles for Your Body Shape

I’m pretty sure I’m an hour glass – I have always had and probably always will have lots of curves…LOL! However, I do like to try various styles to see if it will look good on me or not. Over time, I have found that the wide leg is not flattering although I have a pair. In order for them to look good I need to wear a more fitted top and tuck it in otherwise it’s too much material. My preference has been skinny jeans, which I feel are most figure flattering. I was reluctant to try flares or boot cut but am glad I did because I do feel they look pretty good on me if styled correctly. Bootcut jeans fit slim through the hip and thigh with a slight flare from knee to ankle while the flare jean have a looser and wider fit. You might have heard that skinny jeans are out…who sits around making up the rules and trends?! I say find the style, cut, and wash that work with you and wear them with confidence! Quit frankly I think every style of jeans look great when wore and styled with confidence!

Boot Cut

Boot Cut is often my last go to choice so I decided to start here first because they’re figure flattering and easy to style. They were out of my comfort zone but shouldn’t have been! My hope is that you try new things and surprise yourself that you like something you thought you wouldn’t!

These pictures were taken a while ago. I was very reluctant to try on these jeans thinking they wouldn’t fit me (much too small!) nor would they look good. I’m glad I allowed the sales women to convince me otherwise. I think the dark wash and cut elongate and thin out my legs. You know I love my graphic tees and blazers making this an easy look to assemble! The boot cut jeans would be cute with a sweater in the winter months. Boots, of course, look great with boot cut jeans. I’m tall (5’8″) so I am very appreciative of the length on these jeans! Additionally, I like the high cut as it tends to hold in my midsection!

This is my second pair of boot cut jeans. I was willing to give these a try since I had success with the previous pair. The wash is slightly different than the first pair although still a dark wash. However, these are also high waisted and fit my body type well. These dark wash, high waisted, boot cut jeans look dresser than my go to skinny jeans and distressed jeans. Therefore, I like to pair them with blouses and blazers. Both blouses pictured feature animal prints and mixed prints. Blazers are having a major moment this springs! The white jacket is actually denim. Blazers and jackets transition great between seasons here in the midwest!

My Newest Jean – Super High Waisted Medium Wash Ripped Slim Jeans & High Rise Light Wash

Jeans can be quit challenging when trying to determine good sizing and fit. Therefore, I like to go on line and order several pairs in several sizes and washes and styles. Then I can try them on at home and decide which I like best. Most recently I ordered four pairs, which is how I found these two pairs. Going in to a store I have a similar plan of attack. I find the ones I like the best and grab them in my size and additional sizes. Once you find a brand, cut and size that fits you good, it makes future shopping easier. I have found that some brands that have curvy fits allow me to actually size down because it fits me best. Otherwise, I often have to size up to accommodate by hips and booty. Don’t get yourself worked up over the size. Look for fit and flattering cuts on your body type. If you have mid-section issues, high and medium rise are most likely going to be more flattering than low rise.

Denim Jumpsuit

This denim jumpsuit was purchased last year but I opted to include it in this blog post because denim jumpsuits are currently trending. You know that my criteria for all jumpsuits is it has to be easy on and easy off for quick trips to the bathroom. Several other features were very appealing to me: puffy sleeves, button detail at the ankle, belted waist and the wash. I ordered this on line and was super excited that it fit me. By adding interesting accessories and shoe options, this jumpsuit can be worn so many ways! It makes getting ready super easy – one and done!

If you follow me, you’re absolutely not surprised by the inclusion of this category! Jeans with rhinestone and pearl embellishments, snakeskin print, tuxedo side stripes, varying washes, patches…and the list could go on and on! Here is my most recent purchased pair of jeans with some added interest at the hem, patches and varying colors on the knees. They also have an interesting waist line. It’s important to mention that I got these jeans on sale for about $17.00. I was going to pass on them even though I liked them, liked how they fit and liked that they were comfortable on me. Once I saw the sale price, I changed my mind! I love a good sale and coupons! Did you notice I started and am ending in AC/DC graphic tees?! Did I need another AC/DC graphic tee? Absolutely not…BUT it about color and design. While hard to see, this tee has blue, pink and metallic silver. I knew I wanted to wear my new belt buckle and silver metalic booties with the tee.

From Around the World

Nina – Sharing a Journey – “Are you tired of jeans?  Skinny jeans were with us for such a long time I actually was bored.  Things have changed my friends, it’s time to try the new silhouettes.”

Suzanne – Ask Suzanne Bell – “Think jeans aren’t for you?  Think again. Like many women, I hate shopping for jeans. It’s a pain in the butt. So perhaps you’ve given up – convinced yourself that jeans are not for you.  Like swimsuits and bras, jeans are not a one style fits all. But with some guidance, I think you will find that jeans can be a classic staple. Find the fit for you, and you’ll have a wardrobe workhorse for life.”

Nancy –  Nancy’s Fashion Style – “I am, and never have been, a huge denim lover. Although I have to say that I already own 3 pairs of jeans! But I did love this jumpsuit years ago, it was a bit snug so gave it away. Might have to shop for another one! I think I will love denim one day!”

Nicole – High Latitude Style – “This look triples on denim with the shirt, skirt and booties. Unfortunately, denim or the good old blue jeans are not a good idea in winter in Alaska. It dries too slowly and hence your sweat may freeze. Therefore, denim is either a cover-up in summer in the form of a jacket or mosquito protection when gardening in the form of jeans. Ever since my college time, I had a denim skirt despite they don’t drape nicely.”

Shelbee – Shelbee on the Edge – “I am embracing the resurgence of the 90s denim trends with my oversized black distressed dad jeans. I remember wearing my dad’s jeans exactly this way 30 years ago!”

Amy – Amy’s Creative Pursuits –  “Denim dresses never go out of style, but they are really trending right now.  I have had this denim dress in my closet for years.  I normally wear it in the warmer months, but here I styled it for cooler temperatures.”

Ada – Elegance and Mommyhood – “A pair of dark wash skinny jeans will never ever go out of style – I don’t care what “the style experts” say. Dark skinny jeans are something every woman needs in her closet. I paired mine with the color of the year in a gorgeous shade of lilac.”

Emma – The Style Splash – “Until recently, I had never owned a denim dress or skirt…and then I bought two denim vintage dresses on eBay! I love the style of this dress, with the shoulder pads and embellishment. Oh, and it has pockets too!”

Sweater Trends

The Sweater That Looks Great on Everyone

Fashion and trends should always feel good to wear. It should accent your positives, puts a pep in your step, make you stand tall and proud! Think about that item or outfit that you put on and feel cute, special, your absolute best self! Do you know that feeling and that outfit?! You probably also know the opposite feeling when you put on an item or an outfit that you’re not feeling so great about for one reason or another. Sometimes something will look so cute on someone else but not on you. Then you come across the item that looks great on everyone and you LOVE IT on YOU! That’s this sweater! It actually comes in fourteen colors and style options, sizes s through lx, and is under $31.00. The sweater is a fun spin on animal print. Our sweater weather season in Illinois can run pretty much through fall, winter and even into spring so sweaters can get lots of wear and be styled so many ways! I chose the blue because it’s one of my favorite colors to wear; and I think I look good in most shades of blue. The first time I wore this sweater I had “that feeling”! Would you agree that your day is always much better when you’re totally feeling your outfit and feeling fabulous?!

How I Styled the Sweater

Playing off of the leopard/cheetah sleeves on the sweater I opted for leopard accessories with my belt, earrings, cuff and booties. The hide on hair leopard earrings and cuff are made by my friend LaDonna of LD Watkins Design. T(o read a blog post about LaDonna, click HERE.) My distressed boyfriend jeans are a comfy go to. I think the medium wash is a good match for the shade of blue in the sweater. Lastly, I couldn’t resist adding my faux fur leopard jacket.

Next, I wore the sweater with my faux leather pants. Playing off of the cream color in the sleeves I wore my lug sole boots and a cream colored belt. Did you see my post last week on these boots? (Click HERE to see that post.) You could also wear a faux leather skirt or faux leather shorts with the sweater. Faux leather continues to be super trendy. Cream colored or black dress pants would be another option.

Trending Boots

Lug Sole Booties

Sebrinel Lug Sole Booties

Lug-sole boots are without a doubt my favorite shoe trend for winter because they’re functional, warm, and stylish all at once. They cap off a feminine look with edge and help us channel ’90s grunge in a rugged silhouette. Plus, there’s truly a shape — long, tall, or somewhere in between — for every taste. If you’re unfamiliar, the lug sole is made of rubber and has grooves at the bottom for added grip, but they also play up the design of the shoe, oftentimes working to accent or contrast the upper.

In my opinion, they’re the next best thing to wearing sneakers for going out on a walk in cold temperatures. Some famous versions that are recognizable anywhere, include Prada, Ganni, Dolce Vita, Steve Madden, Sam Edelman, and more, so you can shop at every price point and maybe even collect lug-sole boots for your wardrobe at a few different heights. Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite ways to wear the look. You can guess that I chose this particular pair of lug sole booties because of the rhinestone embellishments.

Look 1

You originally saw this look on my post about winter coat trends. You can see that post, HERE. I could hardly wait to start wearing these boots when they got delivered. The first way I styled them was with my wide leg cropped faux leather pants, fair isle sweater layered over my white button up blouse and added my winter white puffy coat. It’s a monochromatic look with a touch of metallic in the fair isle sweater. I picked up on the rhinestone embellished boots in my accessories.

Looks 2 and 3

For a more casual look, I paired the lug sole booties with my Love sweater and distressed jeans. I think booties and jeans are an obvious match. However, I wanted to share how my jeans could be easily switched out to my red dress pants for a work appropriate look. By switching out one or two items, you can easily change the look and feel of an outfit and get more wear out of each piece in your wardrobe.

You might recall a very similar look that I shared with this exact sweatshirt except in black! When I find things that I love, I will often get them in multiple colors. Additionally, it went on sale plus I had a coupon! I am the self appointed coupon, bargain queen!

The rhinestones on the boots are a nice compliment to the rhinestones on the sweatshirt plus you already know that I adore all things embellished! This sweatshirt has many things going for it – rhinestone embellishment, puffy sleeves, super comfy yet looks super stylish! That’s a trifecta in my books. The faux leather joggers are a frequent go to and the lug sole boots pull the look together!

Thinking about transitioning your wardrobe from winter to spring…it might be a tad early here in Illinois but wanted to share a spring look option with these boots! These faux leather shorts seemed like a great styling option especially since we had a 50 degree day…although still too cold for me hence the tights. The cable knit sweater and winter white tights and boots create a monochromatic look. These shorts were a recent purchase from a local boutique, Jade. I do love supporting local, women owned businesses! I layered on my vintage (once my mom’s coat) camel faux fur collared coat. I was feeling pretty sassy until I got in my car to go to work. Once I sat down, the shorts were much too short. Full disclosure, I ran back in the house and changed into look 5 1/2. I knew I wouldn’t be comfortable at work. The more I thought about the shorts I knew if I couldn’t sit down comfortably I probably wouldn’t wear them at all so I sadly returned them after having worn them for about 10 minutes. Since I loved this look, I’ll probably look for a different pair of faux leather cream colored shorts that are a tad longer so I can sit comfortably! Tip: I tried them on in the store and felt perfectly comfortable in them; however, I should have tried sitting down!

Nothing like a bathroom selfie…LOL! This is what I changed in to – swapped out the shorts for my plaid pants. I didn’t have much time to change so this is what I grabbed. I have a pair of cream colored corduroys that I wish I would have thought of grabbing in order to keep my monochromatic look. However, that will give me another option for another day!

Puffy Coats, Quilted Coats &

Colorful Outwear Accessories

When winter first starts, it’s beautiful and even fun! Fresh white sparkly snow that glistens when the sun shines is very beautiful and serene! Living in Illinois plus always being cold causes me to have quit the coat and winter accessories collection. I view my outer wear and outer accessories an extension of my outfit. It’s the final finishing touch that pulls the whole look together, to the point where I sometimes dislike taking mine off when I finally get inside. This year’s trends included the puffer, which has been going strong for a few winter seasons now but of course there’s usually a slightly different spin each year; and quilted coats. Warm and stylish are my top priorities when it comes to winter coats!

Puffer Coats

Yes, puffers are in every single season, but this year it’s all about the ones that feel so good, you start to doze. Think duvet-inspired styles that might as well be the outerwear equivalent to wearing a cloud.

BCBGeneration revamps the classic puffer coat with this chic version designed entirely in sleek faux leather and finished with thumbhole cuffs. The thumbhole cuffs is an added benefit that I was surprised to find out that I really like! They actually keep my hands relatively warm although I also add mittens or gloves on really cold days! The wing collar adds extra interest. Winter coats can be cute, trendy and keep you warm! Additionally, I’m able to wear it with casual looks and dressier looks! This coat is a total WINNER in my winter coat collection! I size up one in order to be able to wear lots of layers underneath!

One of my most favorite colors to wear is blue – all shades of blue! This arctic blue puffer coat caught my eye and I knew I’d wear it with so many outfits! The soft colors in this fair aisle sweater and the light wash jeans are such a good match with the coat. Believe it or not it’s super lightweight and feels like I barely have a coat on. The bungie straps at the waist allows you to adjust the fit. It also comes in red, rust and moss sizes xxs – xxl. Doesn’t every girl need a silver quilted coat in her winter wardrobe lineup? I was traveling to Orlando, FL in January for a conference. Leaving Illinois was going to be especially cold at that time of year and Orlando was actually having a bit of a cold spell. Additionally, I know that most conference centers are kept cold no matter the time of year not to mention I’m just always cold…so you get the picture, I needed to be warm! However, I didn’t want to travel on the plane or haul around a big, thick puffer coat. My solution is the super thin but super warm quilted silver coat. Silver is basically a neutral so I picked outfits that would match and of course had to bring my silver booties! Both the coat and the booties got lots of attention and compliments during the conference and any time I wear them! Remember, you can be cute and warm if it’s important to you! This coat I purchased in my regular size and am still able to wear layers underneath.

I wanted you to be able to see the front and back as it’s got a bit of high low styling and fully covers your behind! I love the stand up collar. While it looks kind of puffy, it’s actually very thin but very warm!

Winter in Illinois gets to be rather long and dreary after a few months! One way to cheer yourself up and keep it bright is adding a pops of color through your winter outer wear. I like to keep my scarf on as part of the entire look! Bright colors can be an instant mood lifter! They’re easy to find in all lengths, colors and materials!

Love Is In the Air

Valentine’s Looks for Millennials and Mid-Lifers

If you’ve been following with Fashion Trends and Friends, you know that we (Lori, Cindy and I – friends since college) originally got started with the premise that no matter your age or your size you can always look cute and trendy if that is important to you! My advice has and always will be to wear whatever brings you joy and that you feel great wearing! Additionally, don’t be afraid to shop any where; or limit yourself to only shopping at stores that cater to our demographic!

For the past five years, I’ve had the great pleasure of working with my favorite fashion passionate millennial friend Brittany (Lori’s niece)! She’s currently 26 and I’m 60. We’re proof that you can wear anything no matter your age! Would you agree? We typically post in the fall and have also done a Lilly Pulitzer post together. (To see that post, click HERE.) When Brittany reached out asking if I wanted to do a Valentine’s post, I was all for it! You see we both love dressing for the holidays!

Look of Love 1

Brittany is wearing the cutest pink heart sweater from Limelush along with her peep toe booties from Steve Madden and the cutest Kate Spade crossbody heart bag! Brittany is wearing the cutest heart earrings by Brianna Cannon. If I wasn’t on my self-imposed “no shop January”, I would have gotten a red heart shaped bag or a purse that says Love! Accessories always elevate and complete a look so if you don’t want to go full out holiday attire, think about adding touches! I’m wearing a tunic dress, which with my height it requires me to wear leggings. I prefer the added warmth any way. My faux suede red booties are rimmed with metal studs and have a block heel. I added my red glitter heart earrings and cuff bracelet made by LDWatkins Designs. (To see a previous blog post about LaDonna of LDWatkins Designs, click HERE.)

Brittany and I decided to do a matching heart scarf with light pink, pink and purple hearts and a tassel detail on the ends! The scarf can be tied multiple ways and worn with various colors. I paired the scarf with my pink tunic sweater from a local boutique in my area. Brittany opted for a buttery soft tee from Lilly Pulitzer. Take a close look at Brittany’s super fun pumps with the heart heels! This is a great way to create a holiday look without breaking the bank and can easily be worn year after year. Plus you could wear it whenever you want. Don’t just save it for Valentine’s Day.

Couldn’t resist adding this blooper…Maize wanted in on the fun but was uncooperative when it came to sitting pretty! LOL The picture taking challenge is REAL! Not to mention it was freezing!

She did have on a cute Valentine’s scarf!

Brittany paired her beautiful embellished Lilly Pulitzer sweater with her dark wash jeans, feather sandals, pearl headband and heart earrings! I shopped my closet for my whole look, which was purchased last year. My Love sweater has a sequin letter o in the shape of a heart. The pants are faux velvet; and I wear them all winter long. Plus my fabulously fun glitter heart earrings and cuff. We had to add my heart shaped glasses..another fun easy add to for a festive look! Plus you know I love my red lipsticks! Fashion Inspired by the Winter Olympics

Red, White and Blue Winter Styles

The 2022 Winter Olympics are about to kick off; and I don’t know about you but I’m a huge fan of all things Olympics including the fashion! Everything about the Olympics appeals to me not just the fashion but also the human stories about the athletes along with the inspiration, dedication and determination that embodies so many of them! Attending an opening ceremony some day is on my bucket list although preferably during the summer olympics! I truly look forward to seeing the uniforms the athletes wear for opening and closing ceremonies along with their competition uniforms and this year’s outfits don’t disappoint. Ralph Lauren is back at it again, designing Team USA’s ceremonial outfits for the 14th year since it first debuted styles at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

(Getty Images/Ralph Lauren)

“The Opening Ceremony looks—which include an anorak, mid-layer jacket, pants, gloves and boots, all of which include recycled polyester fiber made with post-consumer plastic bottles—were revealed on Jan. 20 and described as a “modern and fresh take on sportswear.”

(Sebastian Kim/Ralph Lauren Corporation)

TEAM USA LEGGINGS

TEAM USA MITTENS

“Team USA’s uniform for the Closing Ceremony will feature red, white, and blue buffalo plaid puffer jackets, intarsia turtleneck sweaters with the American flag, and blue fleece leggings for women, and white fleece pants for men. This year’s unisex uniforms also continue the recent tradition of committing to a level of sustainability, which usually means using recycled and/or responsibly sourced materials.” Each uniform also includes gloves and boots made of recycled polyester and as always, each facet of the uniform is manufactured in the United States.

Which is your favorite…the opening ceremony or closing ceremony outfit? I love the closing ceremony puffer coats, USA leggings and flag sweaters!

Fans can purchase a Team USA outfit from RalphLauren.com. Of course, it’ll cost you a pretty penny if you’re looking to buy the exact outfit (try nearly $2,000 for the puffer jacket alone), but it would be pretty awesome to say you have the same uniform as Team USA!

RED, WHITE AND BLUE WINTER LOOKS

Look 1

Whether you plan to watch the Winter Olympics at home, at your favorite establishment or at a watch party, you can assemble a cute red, white and blue look to support Team USA and it doesn’t have to break the bank! This fair isle sweater is a perfect nod to the team USA sweater of the athletes. I’ve paired it with my navy joggers and Cecelia of New York Trekker boots for a look I’d wear to work as well as a party. This sweater would also be cute paired with red or white pants or jeans. I topped off the look with my red, white and blue plaid shacket. My necklace and earrings are vintage Trifari. (To see a previous blog post on Trifari Jewelry, click HERE.)

The same joggers as above; however, I added my navy blue and white sequined top because you know I love my sparkles! Blazers always feel very olympiad to me! Many years the USA teams enter wearing a blazer during opening ceremonies. The look is completed with my white paten leather boots. You could easily add pops of red by switching out the white boots with either red boots or shoes and red accessories. My pop of red comes with my red pea coat, which has been in my closet forever! Pea coats are classic and never go out of style! The joggers could easily be replaced by white jeans or pants as pictured above! Let’s not forget the red lipstick! (To see my previous blog post on the top five red lipsticks, click HERE.). Lastly, I added my vintage flag Trifari pin to my coat lapel! This completes look #2!

For a more casual red, white and blue Winter Olympics look I opted for my shacket, light wash high rise jeans, a USA graphic t-shirt and my Cecelia New York Trekkor boots. I added my navy blue socks with red and white stars, which doesn’t show up but an easy way to add another fun element to your look. My Go USA mittens were purchased many Winter Olympics ago but you can easily find a more current version. Lastly, I added my white puffer coat.

I thought about adding my white cardigan for extra warmth!

Cozy Knit Wear – January 2020

Matching knit sets may appear to be yet another pandemic-era leisure trend. Now that the weather has caught up with the current season (it’s currently darn cold here in Illinois), I only have one thing on my brain: knitwear. Gone are the days when sweater season meant just crewnecks versus turtlenecks versus cardigans. Now, the knitwear category is seemingly endless with possibilities, which makes shopping for the cozy staples one of the highlights of my winter wardrobe journey. The rise of two- and three-piece ribbed knit sets has been fast and fierce, making them a definite wardrobe contender as fall turns to winter and the temperatures have dropped significantly. One of the great things about these sets is that you can wear them in so many ways, thus allowing for countless outfit possibilities. Quarter-zip knits are equal parts turtleneck, cardigan, and polo sweater, making them just the versatile item your winter wardrobe needs. You can find the sets in so many colors…such an easy way to look put together all while being warm and comfy! That’s winter winning in my styling book!

Cozy Knit Wear Set Look 1

This knit wear set is from Target and it is super duper comfy and soft! I could easily lounge around the house in it but I wore it out for appointments on our first snowy winter day! You could also dress it up by adding boots or heels making it work appropriate. The half zip sweater and puffy sleeves adds some interest to the top. The two pieces can easily be worn with other items providing you with lots of styling options! As you know, I’m always cold and layering on my shacket was an easy styling option. I specifically chose this camel color (although it’s called yellow when ordering it) to match my shacket. This neutral color will be easily paired with almost any other color. (To see a previous blog post on how to style shackets (a current trend that continues to go strong, click HERE.)

Even my fury love Maize approves of my outfit! She might have bitten off a piece of tassel on my necklace…oh the joyous years of puppydom!

Knit wear and sweaters are my absolute go tos all winter long! I’m a sweater loving girl and can’t even begin to tell you how many fill my closets! Sweater weather might have to be a post all it’s own! Stay tuned!

Truly, one of the most versatile pieces I’ve bought all season, I’ve found this multi-functioning knit piece can be worn as a jacket, sweater, tunic or layering piece – how fab is that? And since today’s post is all about knits, I thought I’d show you a few ways I’ve styled this neutral-colored plaid wonder this past week.”

It’s a cozy look, and perfect for winter! Pop on over to the blog to see a few more knit pieces and for my style tips for knitwear for pear shapes.”

Nicole – High Latitude Style – “I have loved knit jumpers all my life. My late mom knitted many of them when I was a kid. I remember a bottle green one with white shoulder section and orange embellishments, a citrus A-line, and a matching skirt and cardigan ensemble in red with green and black stripes. She used acrylic yarn and created super soft, cozy pieces. Her girlfriend, however, knitted wool sweaters. They were so itchy.”

Holiday Outfits and Matching Red Lipsticks

Festive Looks with Red Lipstick

It’s RED LIPSTICK season! Red lipstick is super festive, bold and glamorous! The holidays are the perfect time to wear a red lipstick and elevate your look with a bold pop of red! There are many shades of red and it can become overwhelming as to which shade of red will go well with your skin tone. The red with blue undertones is my go to although I also like some deeper darker richer shades of red. My skin tone is medium or olive. Which is yours? Hopefully, this guide and recommendations will help you pick a shade that’s just right for you! If you think you can’t wear a red lipstick, think again…there’s a shade for everyone!

Universal Shades

A true red shade (with equal amounts blue and orange) is likely to look good on every single skin tone because it doesn’t wash out any of the undertones in your skin.

Fair Complexions

Fair complexions usually have a pink-based undertone. To really complement your skin tone, use blue-based reds or pink-based reds—think raspberry tones.

Light Complexions

Light complexions typically lean neutral or warm-toned. To really complement your skin tone, use a slight orange-based red. These lipsticks will pick up the golden undertones and really brighten your complexion.

Medium Complexions

Medium complexions can lose and gain a suntan easily, so change your red lip based on the season. In the summertime when you are soaking up rays, wear an orange-based red. This will complement your bronze skin and lend a brightening look to your complexion.

In the winter when you’re cozying up by the fire, wear a blue-based red. This will complement your lighter skin tone while giving the appearance of brighter teeth.

Olive Complexions

Olive skin tones have a yellow-green undertone that tans very easily. To really complement your bronze skin tone, use a brick or rust-colored red. These earthy tones will warm up your complexion while blending with your skin.

Golden Tan to Dark Complexions

Golden dark skin tones have a yellow undertone. This type of skin tone can really play with pigment when it comes to choosing a red lipstick. For a bolder look, try a true red. This will pick up the warmth in your skin and create a brighter complexion.

For a more natural-looking red, try blue-based reds—think oxblood. This will complement your darker skin tone.

Deep Complexions

Deep complexions can really play with pigment when it comes to red lipsticks. If you want a bolder look, use an orange-based red to really make your pout pop.

For a more natural-looking red, use a blue-based red—think Merlot. Both types of reds will complement your skin tone and create a brighter smile.

My Top 5 Red Lipsticks

1. Maybelline Color Sensational Made for All Lipstick

I had heard a lot about Maybelline’s Color Sensational Made for All Lipstick. According to their website the lipstick is “Dubbed Best Classic Red Lipstick Shade of 2020 in the Allure Best of Beauty Awards. Made For All Lipstick makeup features specially selected and obsessively tested pigments that make these universal lipstick shades looks sensational on all complexions.” Sounds good and like a no brainer since it’s been tried on over 50 skin tones. So I decided to try it for myself.

I was pleasantly surprised! I’m not typically a fan of matte lipstick as it feels so dry. Additionally, I don’t like when my lipstick or lip gloss bleed into the lines around my mouth. The Red for Me was not dry feeling and did not bleed. The color did work with my skin tone. It can help to outline your lips prior to adding the red lipstick to keep it from bleeding. I added a gloss, which I’ve talked about before and love. The glass added a nice shine and shimmer! The price point on each of these is great they are all under $7.00.

Too Faced Too Too Hot was part of the Too Faced throwback collection several years ago! This has been my go to red for many reasons. The color is great on me. It stays put and doesn’t bleed even without liner. Its not drying. the best part is that it has a metallic shimmer finish although I feel it is very subtle!

I put on my Mac Prep + Prime first, outline my lips and add my matte lipstick. On top, I like to layer a gloss like their retro matte liquid lipcolour.

I purchased this lipstick last winter for the holidays and although it was a lipstick splurge, it does not disappoint! I love this color! It has a glittery, iridescent finish.  “Inspired by the designs of vintage makeup, this limited edition shade introduced within the Rouge à Lèvres Mat collection—a range of intensely-hued lip colours with a long-lasting matte finish. Specially formulated with rich pigment and gelling waxes, the lipstick delivers vibrant colour with a soft, velvety feel.”

Another one of my favorite festive holiday looks that I’m always excited to pull out and wear each season. The whole outfit has been in my closet for some time. I add my silver booties which I’ve worn frequently and linked above along with my rhinestone belt. The black dress pants have a red and white side strip, which is slimming and elongates my legs. Stylish Monday and Link Up Party – December 2021

Festive and Fabulous Outfits

As you can imagine, this month’s theme is a no brainer for me! The extra loving gal is all about the glitter, glitz and glam! While I like the three G’s all year long, the holidays are total permission to be extra BLINGTASTIC! Everything goes for the holidays so think glitter, rhinestones, metallics and sequins. Even crazy fun holiday sweaters are an option. You can add a touch of sparkle, go for a plaid look or be doused from head to toe in all things sparkle. Which one is your holiday style? I’m sure you know which one is my preference! LOL!

Rhinestone Embellishments

Rhinestones come in so many colors and options from small touches on a shoulder to full on coverage on the front of a shirt or sweater. This sweatshirt grabbed my attention because of the pink and blue rhinestones, puffy sleeves (on trend), comfort and can easily be styled with jeans, dress pants, faux leather pants or joggers, and skirts. It can be styled totally glammed up, more casual or even edgy! I opted to pair it with my faux leather joggers and my combat boots for a more edgy look, which I have to say I felt pretty sassy in this outfit! The combat boots also have rhinestone embellishments on the buckles and around the toes.

Jessica Simpson Rhinestone Combat Boots

This crewneck sweater covered in rhinestones was a must have! I just received it and haven’t been able to wear it yet but wanted to share it with you because it’s SO GOOD! It’s way better in person! If you get one fantastically fun blinged out item this season, I highly recommend this sweater. The color of the pink and golden rhinestones seemed unique to me. I visualize wearing this sweater with my side striped jeans. The jeans have a pale pink velvet side strip. I’m going to wear pumps that have a gold/silver shimmer depending on what angle you look at them. I’m leaning towards wearing it for my college girl’s Christmas get together, which is at my house this year. It would be perfect for any holiday event and can be dressed up or styled more casually. Some might say I’ll be extra but for me it will land somewhere in the middle when I pair it with jeans and pumps. How would you wear it?

Sequins and Glitter

Sequins are an easy go to for fun and fashionable holiday looks! You can find almost any article of clothing with sequins such as joggers, skirts, dresses, tops and how about statement sleeves? I couldn’t resist pulling out this picture from two years ago since Andy is wearing almost the identical outfit hence the side by side. It also goes to show that some pieces are simply timeless. I still have all of these pieces in my closet! I don’t foresee getting rid of them any time soon. The sleeves are covered in multi colored sequins. I’ve added a glitter belt and my black boots have matching glitter heels! I chose the cropped faux leather pants so you can see the glitter heels of my boots better. You can keep the accessories minimal since the sleeves steal the show. However, both Andy and I elected for a smaller scale necklace and earrings.

Plaid

When you think about a print or pattern that’s associated with the holidays, what comes to mind? Plaid comes to my mind immediately although I do like wearing plaid year round. You could say I’m mad for plaid always! Did you see last week’s post on how to style a plaid flannel shirt multiple ways? (To see that post, click HERE.) Is there such a thing as wearing too much plaid? I think not as evidenced by my plaid suit. I adore the colors, the velvet collar and velvet covered button. These pieces could easily be worn separately and all winter long. I paired it with a ruffled black blouse and wore this look to work. The necklace and matching earrings are vintage and were gifted to me from my girlfriend Cindy when she worked for Trifari. I was thrilled to find these leggings with matching side plaid stripes and faux leather x’s. It was easy to add my leopard print pumps and faux fur jacket. Lastly adding boots that sparkle and matching plaid socks pulls the whole look together. My brooch also adds an extra festive touch! I got lots of compliments when I wore this look to work and out and about on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Joy –   Joyous Styling    “A little sparkle for the holidays! I subdued it with a black wool turtleneck.  I added a statement necklace and rockstud heels  to complete the look.”

It means you can wear an evening gown. So I did with a puffer vest over the gown. Independent from the aforementioned dress code, for me festive attire means evening wear. Sequins, velvet, tulle, lace, silver or gold sandals, big costume jewelry, bold jewel colors or black. However, given the cold weather of Interior Alaska, I have to be creative to stay warm. Leggings under an evening gown, for instance.”

Shelbee – Shelbee on the Edge – “For some festive holiday spirit, I pulled together big bold prints for what is probably my happiest outfit ever. I could not stop smiling while wearing this combination of red plaid and giant stars with double pom poms on my head.”

Suzanne – Ask Suzanne Bell –  ‘Be it a festive holiday party or a girls’ night out, your evening will start off more relaxed if you have a few outfits planned out ahead of time.  Looking for some inspiration? Today, I’ve rounded up  some of my favorite holiday outfits (current and past) to hopefully inspire you to shop your closet, and sparkle and shine a little brighter this holiday season.”

Michele – On Instagram as Seechele_styles “Casual chic in velvet leggings with a festive sweatshirt.”
