10 HOLIDAY LOOKS

THE THREE G’S:  GLITZ, GLITTER & GLAM

Dressing up for the holidays should be fun and relatively easy!  Just think about how to add a little sparkle, glitz and glitter!  As you know, I’m all about those adjectives…glittery, glitzy, glamy and for me more is always better!   The holidays give me a reason to add more sparkle than I might normally do.  I know that it isn’t everyone’s comfort zone so I’ll share some simpler looks as well as full on glam looks!

CASUAL HOLIDAY GLAM

An easy way to create a simple holiday look is to wear something red, something plaid, a sweater or jeans with some embellishments, metallic touches…you get the idea.

Target Sweater with Embellishments.
This look can easily be worn all winter long!

A Sequined Sweater doesn’t require any further accessories!  Love this gray with multi colored sequins!
Red Jeans pair great with the sweater and are a holiday perfect color!  These sparkly Vince Camuto boots are years old but still a favorite!

These plaid pants scream holiday and are so easy to dress up or dress down. Here are two ways I’ve styled them already.  I also plan to wear them with a solid white sweater and a solid yellow sweater.  If you only get one new item, I’d recommend these!

Mrs. Christmas Sweater

This year we’re wearing “ugly Christmas Sweaters”!  I can’t bring myself to get an ugly one!  HA!  No surprise!  This Mrs. Christmas sweater caught my eye and I couldn’t resist it!  I just happened to have these faux glasses from a previous costume so couldn’t resist taking some pics wearing them with the sweater!  Do you have an ugly Christmas sweater?

Express has lots of great sequined and velvet items!  I purchased the top on the right.  It will stye perfectly with a velvet jacket or a jacket I have with sequined sleeves.  This sequined dress was AH MA ZING!!!!

SHOP SEQUINS & VELVET AT EXPRESS:

TRY ONS AT STEIN MART

Lori loved the pants and the red top!  She typically wears black and white so she decided to purchase the red top for a change!  While the black top had some great details – rhinestone v neck and metal rings – , she felt as though the material was too clingy in the middle.

This dress was going to be a possible solution to finding an “ugly sweater”.  The fitting room was cold so we were trying things on over our clothes.  We had a good laugh at the top Lori was trying on – note the placement of the roses.  Neither of these made it into our final haul.

Due to being cold, I kept most of my clothes on while trying on this sequined skirt and velvet blazer!  You’ll have to image what these two pieces would look like styled with a different solid colored top and some glittery or velvet pumps!  I love everything about these two pieces!  It’s a great look for both Christmas and New Years!

7 TIPS FOR A STRESS FREE HOLIDAY SEASON

MEDITATION

I find a daily 10 minute mediation reduces my stress, improves my mental focus and increases my overall sense of well being.  It is hands down the single best thing I do for myself on a daily basis! Meditation is a great way to keep calm and focused during the holidays!  Do you enjoy the practice of meditation?

Daily Meditation

EXERCISE

During the holiday season, it can be extremely difficult to find time to get to the gym, exercise and maintain healthy eating.  Climbing stairs is a great way to work your glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps and calves. Approximately 60 days ago, I started walking the 5 flights of stairs to my office. I do this once when I first arrive on Mon/Tues/Thurs/Friday.  I take Wednesday off. I don’t like doing it, it never seems to get easier and I am huffing and puffing when I arrive at the top.  It literally only takes a few minutes and the payoff is huge! I am stronger and my thighs haven’t looked this good in years!

Another simple idea is to park far away from your destination and get more steps in your day!  Have you heard that sitting is the new smoking?!

How do you like to maintain your physical health during the holidays?

Walk the Stairs Instead of Taking the Elevator

PAMPER YOURSELF

Take a couple hours out of your busy schedule and refuel your energies!  Consider getting a manicure, pedicure and/or a massage!  It might be just what the doctor ordered to put holiday pep back in your step . Not to mention having a holiday mani/pedi is F-U-N!

I tend to carry stress in my shoulder and neck area.  I will catch myself with my shoulders raised and tensed.  Either a quick visit to my chiropractor and or a longer visit getting a massage can relax my muscles and ease some tension and stress! I plan to do just that over winter break along with a facial!

Another way to destress is a therapeutic bath with Espsom Salt Soaking Solution.  Dr Teal’s makes a Wellness Therapy Soaking Solution.  If you’re not a bath person and prefer showers, how about using a shower bomb.

How do you like to pamper yourself?

SPEND TIME WITH THOSE YOU LOVE

A highlight of the holidays for me is spending time with family and friends doing things I love with those I love!  Sometimes is easiest to go out vs having people over although I’m doing both this season.  Once my house is decorated, I love to have others over.  This year I’m hosting my “Sclero Sisters” (See a previous post on my autoimmune disease:  I Have Scleroderma.  It Doesn’t Have Me!) . It is my turn to host my college girl friends.  Each year we rotate turns.

LAUGH

The friends and family pictured below (and others not pictured) not only bring me great joy they also bring me laughter!  I LOVE TO LAUGH!  Did you know that laughter has great health benefits?  Research suggests that laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain, and protects you from the damaging effects of stress. As children, we used to laugh hundreds of times a day (300 times per day), but as adults life tends to be more serious and laughter more infrequent (sadly only 20 times per day). By seeking out more opportunities for humor and laughter, though, you can improve your emotional health, strengthen your relationships, find greater happiness—and even add years to your life.  Go ahead and laugh more!

HOLIDAY LIGHTS

I’ve loved looking at lights and holiday decorations for as long as I can remember.  As a little girl, I fondly recall going to see very special Christmas Eve decorations on Lehnertz Ave prior to going to my grandparents.  As an adult, I still delight in going down Lehnertz Ave.  Although it seems rather simplistic, it holds dear, sweet memories for me!

My husband knows I love seeing the lights so he’ll drive me around the neighborhood so I can look – sometimes I go in my jammies and wrap myself in a blanket. Additionally, there are some destinations that put on amazing light shows.  Two that come to mind that I love are Illuminations at the Morton Arboretum and the Brookfield Zoo Lights.

Do you have a special display you like to see or a special tradition that helps to keep you stress free and bring you joy?

After WWII soldiers returned to the US to build their homes and their families. Upon their return this community committed themselves to leave a legacy to their children that included the biblical Christmas story. This drive-through display where residents each display a part of the original Christmas story includes lights, sound and all the biblical characters: wise men, camels, shepherds, sheep and manger scene. Peanuts characters with Charlie Brown follow on Lehnertz Circle. All lighted and all free! (Lehnertz is recognized as the oldest, totally free traditional Christmas display in Illinois.)

Perfect in Plaid Pants

PERFECT IN PLAID PANTS

13 WAYS TO STYLE PLAID PANTS

Plaid pants are trending and they’re more wearable than you might think!

Plaid is almost as much of a fall/winter certainty as pumpkin-infused baked goods. While we’re used to seeing the classic pattern on blazers and skirts, FTF was pleasantly surprised to see it popping up on slacks and skinnies. Best of all, plaid pants are basically an outfit-maker—and not overwhelming, we promise—when you throw them on with a sweater and boots.

Here are thirteen pairs that prove it.

HOLIDAY PLAID

To say I was obsessed with these plaid skinny pants the moment I saw them is an understatement!  I can’t tell you how many compliments I got when I wore them!  Paired with a mixed media sweater, pumps and pearls makes for a perfect holiday look.  These skinny plaid pants will also pair great with white and yellow.  I’m also contemplating pairing them with leopard since leopard is a neutral.  Pattern mixing is not my forte but I’m willing to step out of my box!

A slightly more edgy look when plaid pants are paired with a lace skeleton tee and fury jacket.  Pearls add a bit of femininity…edgy, feminine plaid – you can say you saw it here!

FALL/WINTER PLAID

Plaid pants and big statement sleeved sweaters with a simple top or tee along with pumps or booties for work.  You could switch out the top for a tee and wear some tennies for a more casual look!

Paired plaid with crushed velvet and metallic pumps!  Liked the mix of textures and interest!

One pair of window pane plaid pants styled two ways…plaid and floral are a styling win!

How to Style Faux Leather Leggings

Eight Ways to Style Faux Leather Leggings

Part 2 of 2

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to read our blogs, to like and follow us, to leave us comments and for your constant support!  There are no words to express my gratitude!  Besides teaching, fashion is my passion and I thoroughly enjoy sharing my passion with all of you!  May you be surrounded today by those you love deeply!  May your hearts be full and your gratitudes abundant!

Last week FTF did a collaboration with other wonderful mid-lifers on how we style our faux leather leggings.  To read that post click here: How to Style Leather Leggings

This week I’m sharing my top 8 ways to style them!

LOOK 1

This look was first featured in my post on Weekend Get Away

Pairing a tunic with the leggings is an easy match for a casual look.  You could pair a tunic top, plaid/flannel or any other tunic.  A tunic is great for hiding any flaws such as a mid-section, hips or upper thighs.  The wedgie sneakers look great with the leggings.  Adding a cardigan is also an option and leads me to look 2.

SHOP THE LOOK:

Plaid Tunic

Lace Up Cuff Cardigan

LOOK 2

Cardigans and leopard print are having major moments this fall!  I think leopard is always a popular fashion staple/statement.  If you’re considering a leopard cardi, now is the time and it pairs great with leather leggings!  This is such an easy look to put together and yet looks so polished.  I’m wearing a black hi/low tee from Target.  Add some accessories and booties!  BAM!  This cardi is from Glik’s.  Any style or color of cardigan would be a match with the leggings and so figure flattering!

SHOP THE LOOK:

LOOK 3

Most of us have a plaid top or two or three in our closet.  I pulled out this plaid top and paired it with one of my faux fur vests another common fashion statement the past several years.  Lastly, I added my new leopard pumps that I purchased at the Grand Opening of the Stein Mart in Deerfield.  See the post HERE.

I have to admit I stole this look from on IG account I follow (@sarahtondello).  When putting together my looks, I knew I wanted to try this – pattern mixing is always a challenge for me so putting plaid with leopard is way out of my box.  I am always trying to push myself and am inspired for all those fashionistas I love to follow!

Added a statement necklace and other bling.  The only thing missing would be a purse…a leopard purse, which surprisingly I don’t own.  Sarah had one in her flat lay.  I loved the whole look so much.  As a result, I just ordered a leopard purse!

SHOP THE LOOK:

This is the purse I ordered to complete my look!

LOOK 4

Shopped my closet for this entire look.  Snake skin print is big on trend right now.  I recalled that I had this great Michael Kors snakeskin print top with silver stud details.  My silver Asos booties and the statement necklace from the look above completed this look!  Easy to put together and on point with all the current trends.  The top is figure flattering because it’s not clingy and slightly oversized adding to the comfort!

SHOP THE LOOK:

LOOK 5

I feel rather badass in this look!  This sweater/sweatshirt is so unbelievably soft and so comfy!  I purchased it at Glik’s when we were on our long weekend get away in Saugatuck.  The pearls, silver beads, and sleeve cuts outs made it so appealing to me…it’s always in the details!  It’s oversized and is figure flattering.  Combat boots are currently on trend although I’m not really a fan.  I could embrace these Guess Groovi Motorcycle Booties!  The straps, pearls and studs make them more interesting and much cuter than the typical combat boot.

SHOP THE LOOK:

LOOK 6

If you follow FTF, you already know that I’m a sucker for all things glitter and sequins.  You also know that I typically am fancy, dressed up and don’t mind being over dressed at any given event.  Why not dress up your faux leather leggings!  Again, I shopped my closet for this sequined tank top, Calvin Klein jacket and sequined embellished pumps!  With the holidays right around the corner, this seemed like a great option!  Add some blinged accessories and your holiday ready!

SHOP THE LOOK:

LOOK 7

Why not have two fancy looks?  I’ve had this one shoulder crushed velvet top in my closet with the tags still on for years…literally years!  Not sure why I’ve never worn it but if I really thought about it I think because I couldn’t figure out what to wear for pants or a skirt.  Pairing it with my faux leather leggings seemed like a good time to pull the tag off!  This would also be a great holiday look.  I switched out the jewelry from the look above but kept the same sequined pumps.  The gathering on the sides make this top figure flattering!

LOOK 8

Camo is another hot trend that has continued on from last year!  I thought it would make a cute super casual look paired with the faux leather leggings!  The fact that this sweatshirt was cropped, gray and had black arm stripes made it different than any others I already had in my closet.  Wearing this top is a major stretch for me as I typically would wear something longer to hid my midsection, hips and upper thighs.  Since my weight loss, I’m trying to push myself into other looks that I wouldn’t have dreamed of wearing in the past!

SHOP THE LOOK:

FAUX LEATHER LEGGING

You know that feeling…they look great on others but I’m not sure they’re for me!  Will it be a waste of money?  I can’t say enough about these faux leather leggings I purchased on Amazon.  I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on them.  This particular pair is high waisted, which is great for holding you in and minimizing any muffin top issues vs a lower banded waist.  I wash them in cold water and hang them to dry. Have I sold you on them yet?  You won’t be disappointed!  Since I love this pair so much and have them on high repeat, I decided to investigate other more expensive pairs wondering if I’d find a pair I’d love even more.  No such luck!  I have yet to try on another pair that I liked as much!  It’s no secret, that I’m obsessed with my faux leather leggings!  I’d wear them every day if I could get away with it!  Everything goes with faux leather leggings…there’s not a single thing that you couldn’t figure out how to style it with faux leather leggings!

So what was your favorite look?  Do you have any styling tips or suggestions?  Leave us a comment.

A special thank you to Mr. FTF for being my very patient photographer extraordinaire!

How to Style Leather Leggings

How to Style Leather (Faux) Leggings

Part 1 of 2

In preparation for this collaborative blog post, FTF did a little research.  The goal was to find stylish recommendations for mid-lifers to style leggings or in this case faux leather leggings.  Lots of pictures and recommendations were found for the millennials very few and almost no pictures found for mid-lifers.   Here’s how we’re rock’in the trend no matter age!  Today it’s all about FAUX LEATHER LEGGINGS…

CASUAL

Faux leather leggings are great for casual days of running errands, just hanging out on the weekends just to name a few…I paired mine with a shorty camo sweatshirt, which is trending along with wedgie sneakers and my moto jacket!

DATE NIGHT or GIRL’S NIGHT OUT

Paired my faux leather leggings with my fur vest, plaid top and leopard pumps and statement necklace for a dressier look.  You could also wear booties with this look if you prefer them over pumps.  I think this look is great for a weekend adventure with either your significant other or your gal pals.

FANCY

With the holidays around the corner, why not dress up your faux leather leggings by adding a sequined top, jacket, blinged pumps and some rhinestone jewelry!  FTF followers know that I don’t need much of a reason to be fancy!  This is totally my wheel house…the blingier the better!

SHOP THE LEGGINGS:

I wasn’t sure I was going to like the faux leather leggings or be confident enough to wear them out so I set out to find a decent pair at a fantastic price!  Success…these leggings could easily become my fall and winter uniform!  They fit and feel great!  I especially love that they are high waisted.  The best part is they’re only $15.99!  Yes, you read that right!

Weekend Get Away

Weekend Get Away

What to Wear for a Weekend Away

Do you like to take long weekends away?  I’m fortunate to get many national holidays off being in education.  For the past two years, my husband and I have gone away over the Columbus Day weekend.  We typically like to go and explore new places.  After searching where to go this year with the criteria of being within a three hour ride and by water, we decided to return to the same spot we went last year.  Saugatuck, Michigan is an easy ride from us and we found the perfect place to stay.  My hubbie doesn’t mind driving so I get to sit back and enjoy the fall colors!

On a side note, this year we arranged to get our wood floors done while we were gone.  All the more reason to be out of the house as we wouldn’t be able to live comfortably without the use of our first floor.  We went from a light colored floor to a custom blend darker stain.  The contractor had us choose the color prior to heading out.

Beach Way Resort

Last year, and again this year we’ve stayed in the same water front suite.  This year we had the advantage of knowing where everything was and all the good places to eat.  Our “water front suite” is a one bedroom, bathroom, full kitchen and family room.  You walk right out the sliding doors and can view the water.  Each suite is individually owned (managed by Beach Way) and all appear super cute as I’ve peeked inside the unoccupied suites.

We can watch the paddle boat, sail boats and other cabin cruisers go by…last year the weather was much nicer and we enjoyed some drinks on the patio.  This year it was cold, rainy and cloudy much of our stay.  We didn’t let the weather dampen our FUN!

What I Wore and What We Did

Saugatuck is pretty laid back and casual.  Since I dress up all week long for work, I tend to like to travel in comfort and lean towards leisure wear on the weekends especially if we’re not doing too much.  I knew from last year’s trip that I could wear casual, comfy clothes the whole time.  Don’t get me wrong…I still have a need to be in something cute!  No surprise – right?!

Day 1

SHOP THE LOOK:

This plaid tunic comes in three colors.  The two plaid combination and the fact that it’s a tunic were the selling points for me.  It covers my mid-section and upper thighs perfectly.  I purchased it at Stein Mart.  No surprise right…did you see my post last week on my attendance at the Grand Opening of Stein Mart in Deerfield?  Click HERE for the details.

The cardigan caught my attention because I loved the grommet and laces on the sleeves.  Cardigans are great for hiding any mid section flaws and are always on trend but are especially having a moment this fall and will continue into the winter!  This cardigan comes in five colors.

I really can’t say enough about these faux leather leggings I purchased on Amazon.  I wasn’t sure I would like them on me or really wear them very often.  Therefore, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money.  These particular pair are high waisted, which is great for holding you in and preferred over lower cuts.  I think they’ve become my fall wardrobe go to…in fact there is an upcoming post collaboration on all the ways to style them!  Have I sold you on them yet?  You won’t be disappointed!

SHOP THE WEDGE SNEAKER

My wedge sneaker is super cute and comfy!  I always prefer heels so I’m a big fan.  However, I’ve included some other cute choices in case wedges aren’t your thing!

Since it rained and was cold and dreary when we go into Saugatuck we decided to go to the movies and saw A Star is Born.  We both really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it if you haven’t already seen it.  Lady Gaga did a great job acting in my opinion.  We went into Holland and drove around site seeing.  Holland has a great downtown area – very quaint!

Day 2

A friend on Instagram hooked me up with this great gap leisure look.  She knew that I love the star trend and that I’m a big fan of all things glitter!  Boy she knows me well!  My gold/silver glittery Ked’s are quit old.  I think I got them on the discount rack at DSW.  This outfit was super comfy, perfect for shopping and perfect for the rainy, chilly day!

As mentioned it was cold, cloudy and rainy all day long.  We headed out to Ida Red’s for breakfast.  It’s very popular!  Inside it’s a blast to the past and on the small side.  When the weather is nicer, you can eat outside.  If you go, be prepared to put your name on a waiting list!  We feel it’s well worth it!

Then we walked around town and shopped and shopped and shopped…Len liked a few of the shops but he’s a saint and will wait patiently while I try on provided we find a spot for him to sit!  HA…he’s my bag carrier and holder!

It’s no secret that math isn’t my thing so of course Len thought this tee was perfect for me…I do have a sense of humor and thought it was pretty funny!  I think 4 out of 3 people would agree with me!  HA!

Last year the weather was nice and we spent more time at the beach, the Ferry Tour, nature walks, etc. So we didn’t do a lot of shopping. This year we stayed closer to town and did more shopping.  We found a marvelous store called Glik’s. I did some serious damage there!  If you’re ever in town, I’d recommend it.  I was told they have many stores all over the midwest but none in my area!  Bummer!  Well maybe that’s a good thing!

Day 3

I was drawn to these joggers and hoodie because of the cut and colors.  The top is a loose fit.  The joggers are a little more fitted.  New York and Company has many super cute jogger outfits.

Why not do a little yoga before heading home?!  Tree pose by the tree and beautiful fall colors!

A leisurely start to our day and time to head home.  Last year, we ate at Blue Star Cafe in Douglas.  We liked it so much we decided to go back this year!  How cute is it?!  Their breakfast is delicious!  Fuel for the trip home!
