Stein Mart Grand Opening

THE GRAND OPENING OF STEIN MART

If you’re an avid FTF follower, you know I love, love, love shopping Stein Mart!  When they reached out to invite me to attend the Grand Opening of their store in Deerfield it was an easy YES for me!

I was so excited and felt like a giddy school girl!  I wish I would have answered the question better!  It was such a delight to meet Jennie, Allie and Bradley.

Got featured on Stein Mart’s Insta Stories proudly holding the gift card they gave me to shop with for attending the Grand Opening and sharing my experience with our FTF followers!

STEIN MART DEERFIELD STORE

The welcoming committee greeted customers at the door.  The first 200 customers received bags!  There was a pancake truck parked out front!  Customers were greeted in grand style!

This particular Stein Mart carries high end purses as well as purses in all price points!  I recently purchases a Jessica Simpson purse in silver metallic!  There is a Carlos Santa purse that I have my eye on currently.  It comes in mauve, black and blue.  This round purse is so cute!  Loving that the round purse trend is continuing into fall!

Stein Mart carries a huge selection of jeans!  The styles they carry are on trend including all the latest styles, fun details and embellishments.

There was a wide selection of hats, gloves, scarves, etc.  If I was a hat person, I loved these winter hats.  How cute is the plaid purse on the top shelf?  There were also brightly colored hats, scarves and gloves…all kinds of cuteness!  You’re bound to find something that fits your style!  Accessories also includes belts, socks and jewelry.  Stein Mart carries luggage, cosmetics bags, tech and toys!

Stein Mart has a Home and Bed and Bath Department.  They always have fun items for holiday decorating.  In the back ground, you will notice a petite department.  They also have a woman’s and men’s department.  All departments have equally cute on trend items at very reasonable prices!

TRY ONS

This V Cristina dress is from the boutique at Stein Mart, which I had purchased earlier and wore it the day of the Grand Opening.  I love the tassels along the hem, the embroidery, the sheer sleeves, the bright colors…I knew I had to have it!

My initial try ons included four sweaters, one jacket, two pairs of jeans and a plaid top.

This pearl embellished sweater is super soft!  Love the big sleeves and the neckline!  Of course the pearl embellishments are a win!  These skinny gray jeans fit like a glove and are high waisted.  High waisted is trending again.  Not that I would tuck anything in but high waisted jeans hold my midsection in nicely.  Both of these came home with me!  Winner Winner!

SHOP THE JEANS

The flowers on the big sleeves of this super soft sweater sold me!  Another Winner! A fellow IG friend saw my insta stories on the Grand Opening.  She suggested I pair this sweater with camo pants.  That’s way out of my comfort zone but I just might try it.  I’m still trying to expand my fashion styling and go outside of my box!  Never be afraid to expand your fashion horizons!  This sweater has lots of options regarding pairing it with jeans and dress pants…and camo!

Be still my camo loving heart!  Camo continues to be on trend.  The blush color really makes this sweater a YES for me!  I felt the waist line is figure flattering for me.  Another Winner!

SHOP THE CAMO TOP

Leopard is always in style but it’s really having a moment this fall!  This sweater is the same designer (Joseph A) as the camo sweater.  It’s very soft, light weight and figure flattering.  You guessed it…Winner!

Plaid continues this fall and winter to be on trend.  I was attracted to this particular top because of the ruffle details on the shoulder, elbow and wrist.  Little details always make me happy.  This top pulled in the chest area.  It gapped when I moved.  This can be an issue for this big chested gal, which I talked about before.  I didn’t get it for that reason.  However, I’m wondering if I sized up it would work?!  Might have to go back and give a bigger size a try.

SHOP THE PLAID TOP

The grommets on these jeans is such a fun detail!  The jeans fit me great and were comfortable.  The only reason I did not get them was because I felt I have another pair very similar.  There was a pair of jeans with striping along the seams which I went back to try on after my initial try on session.  I didn’t get them but might go back for those as well.

SHOP THE GROMMET JEANS

SHOP THE SHOES

These Betsey Johnson leopard pumps were a must have!  The ruffle detail is just so fantastic!

These Betsey Johnson leopard booties with a red heel almost went home with me!  Might have to go back for these!

MY STEIN MART HAUL

This entire experience was so much fun for me from meeting the wonderful sales staff to shopping to sharing my experience!  I truly felt like a Fashion Rock Star!  As I stated in my interview, I’m a HUGE Stein Mart fan because of the unique pieces, good quality and great prices!  I’m thrilled to hear that they are opening up new stores.  Another is opening in Willowbrook.  The St. Charles and Wheaton locations are where I frequent but it’s great knowing there are other options!

You know it’s a great day when you’re going home with a trunk full from Stein Mart!

The Fall 2018 “IT” Color

The Fall 2018 “IT” Color – Mustard

“Ceylon Yellow”

According to Vogue Magazine,

Ten fashionable colors compose the main palette of the Fall Winter 2018 2019 collections. Warm and autumnal  tones alternate with vibrant and strong hues much loved by millennials, like shocking pink.  I would add also loved by mid-lifers!

  • Whisky brown: a warm, enveloping hue, just like the famous liquor. Its natural nuances remind of wood’s veining.
  • Cherry red: a “full-bodied” color, ideal to enhance velvet, tulle and satin. Ideal for elegant, retro-feel looks.
  • Digital blue: the color of almost all social networks. A color that evokes technology, and the future. Perfect for all cyber girls.
  • Fuchsia pink: it’s still one of the favorite hues with designers. Exuberant if worn from head to toe, or as a creative detail.
  • Lavender: also called “lilac”, it’s a pastel tone that, unlike pink or baby blue can add character to a statement or intricate outfit.
  • Orange: Fall’s symbolic hue, it will stand out with all its “vitaminic” effect.
  • Sapphire yellow: to uplift classic patterns, like florals or checks.
  • Olive green: apparently subdued, it is similar to military green but has a golden undertone.

How to Wear the “Mustard” Trend

Last week, Brittany and I styled the same fall trends to show that both millennials and mid-lifers can rock the same look.  (Millennial and MId-Lifer Shop and Style the Same Fall Trends) This week we’re sharing how we both styled the fall “IT” color mustard:

BRITTANY:

Brittany chose a mustard colored cardi paired with black jeans, over the knee boots, a white tee and a wine colored scarf. Wine or “Red Pear” is a great accent color to wear with mustard.

JULIE:

This mustard colored cardi and white tee are actually Brittany’s.  I borrowed both for our photo shoot.  Aother example of how a millennial and a mid-lifer can shop the same stores and wear the same things!  This cardi paired great with my blanket scarf, which was also featured in last weeks blog on fall trends, skinny dark wash jeans and booties.  The white tee has an interesting diagonal cut in the front.  Cardi’s are a super hot trend for any age.  The beauty of cardis is that they hid many flaws and are super figure flattering on all body types.  Additionally, really long dusters are trending so if a cardi is long on you don’t shy away from wearing it!

ADDITIONAL STYLING SUGGESTIONS

I am a big fan of wearing all shades of yellow so I’m having lots of fun wearing it in so many ways!

The pants are new but I shopped my closet for the rest of this look.  If mustard isn’t your color, think of ways to wear it in smaller details such as this blouse with pops of mustard.

This look incorporates the same mustard pants from the first look with a fall floral duster.  The floral has touches of mustard and this look could be paired with black pants.  Dark floral is also a fall trend and great way to add a pop of mustard if wearing a lot of it isn’t your thing.

POPS OF MUSTARD IN SMALLER DETAILS

Pops of mustard yellow are worn in this look both in my suede sandals and the dark floral top.  This look could be dressed down by pairing it with jeans.  The dark floral as mentioned above is a fall trend.  I love the big tassel tie.  The loose flowing top is great for hiding any mid-section flaws.

Who doesn’t love a fun graphic tee?!  I absolutely had to have this MTV tee because it brought back so many great memories for me of Lori and I sitting in our college apartment watching the music videos on a very small (probably 13″ TV) in 1983 watching the same 10 music videos over and over and over again!  Additionally, I love the bright yellow, pink and blue in the tee.  I added the mustard cardi to finish off my casual look.

Millennial and Mid-Lifer Shop Fall Fashion Trends

Millennial and Mid-Lifer Shop and Style Fall Fashion Trends

Meet millennial cutie Brittany.  FTF has done previous blog posts with Brittany (Eyelash Extensions).  Brittany is Lori’s niece.  She and I had an immediate connection over all things beauty and fashion.  Brittany is passionate about fashion and likes to look stylish at work and even at home.  She loves to find good deals and enjoys accessorizing from head to toe!  I believe she is my millennial clone!  A girl after my heart for sure!

Fall Fashion

Brittany and I have talked about doing a post in which we styled the same look to show that fashion isn’t limited by age. I thought it would be interesting to have her pick the fall trend items as it forced me a little out of my comfort zone.  We did not discuss how we were each going to style the piece.  Here are our results.

Look 1 Tunic Turtle Neck Sweater

I must admit I wasn’t very excited about this one.  Both the style and color are not something I would have picked myself.  However, that’s why it’s a great idea to step out of your box now and then and allow someone else to make recommendations.  My least favorite color to wear is orange.  This shade is a very soft, subtle shade almost a peach.  Additionally, I thought I was going to look like a tank in this style of sweater.  I was wrong on both counts!

Brittany

Brittany styled the sweater with dark wash jeans, over the knee boots and gold accessories.

Julie

I styled the sweater with dark wash skinny jeans, booties, a blanket scarf and gold accessories.

We found it interesting that we both choose dark wash jeans and gold accessories without discussing it.  We agree that it would be a cute sweater over leggings.  I have a navy blue puffy vest that I could layer for warmth.  This sweater is figure flattering as it hides any midsection flaws you might have.  Last year, I tried over the knee boots but didn’t feel I could pull it off.  Since my weight loss, I might try them again this year.

This shade of orange is great with navy, black, gray and brown so lots of stying options!

My blanket scarf has some terrific fall colors and will pair well with so many other fall items.  Believe it or not it’s from Hobby Lobby!  When I saw it, I knew immediately I had to have it for this look!

Shop the Sweater

Look 2 Plaid Vest

Brittany says that she choose this vest because she likes plaid for the fall.  She feels that vests are slimming and figure flattering.  I liked this vest right away.  Although Brittany choose it, I probably would have been drawn to it myself.

Brittany

Brittany paired the plaid vest with a black long sleeve tee, black jeans, beige boots and gold accessories.

Julie

I kept on my skinny dark wash jeans and beige/brown booties.  In the first couple of pics, I added a brown belt with gold touches.  The addition of the belt draws in the material and creates more of a waist.  I added a gold necklace. The vest colors are somewhat difficult to see but it has gray and an oatmeal color.  I wore the vest over an oatmeal colored long sleeve tee.  The tee is somewhat clingy in my midsection but was camouflaged by the vest.  I would also dress up this look for work by wearing red dress pants.

Shop the Vest

The vest comes in 8 color choices!

Brittany and I had lots of fun planning, styling and picture taking together!  Come back next week for our take on the “It” fall color!  We are also planning a holiday blog post!

As you can see, 20 somethings and 50 somethings can wear the same item/s and look cute and trendy!  FTF hopes you don’t limit your wardrobe based on your age!  Don’t be afraid to step out of your fashion comfort zone and try new things.  You just might be surprised!

Lori’s pick Signature Care Apricot Scrub can be found at the Jewel-Osco.  If you don’t have a Jewel-Osco in your area, you can also purchase it at Walgreens, Safeway and Alberstsons according to my  internet search for this particular product.

Julie’s pick is by Clarisonic:  Refining Micro Polish.  I mainly use this body scrub when I’m going to get a spray tan, which doesn’t happen often.  While it costs more, it lasts a long time since I’m not using it regularly.  Shop this product here.

What I Did on My Summer Break

 Summer Break 2018

Favorite Highlights and What I Wore

JUNE

A broken foot is not my idea of a good way to start off my summer break!  It’s my first break my entire life!  I think it got broken when I fell off my flatform sandals!  HA!  The crazy thing is that I broke it the first Friday in June and walked on it for a month (in heels) before finding out it was broken.  It never swelled or bruised!  Grateful I only needed this boot and not a cast and crutches!  I’m pretty sure none of you are interested in a “post op” shoe so no links here!

Many have the misconception that teachers have three months off.  Not true!  I work off and on most the month of June reviewing the past year and planning for the upcoming year.  These pics were taken days after my break – remember I didn’t know.  You’d think a flat shoe would be fine but I hobbled around.  My boss and I planned a half day presentation for all of our administrators…the theme:  Kindness is My Superpower!  Every Child Needs a Champion!

TIME WITH MY FAVORITE GIRLIE

This little cutie loves to fence.  She has practice on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30, which is impossible during the school year for me to get into the city from work!  Finally, got to watch her at practice!  So impressive and her love for the sport is amazing!  Truly a highlight for me!  Love her to pieces!

MORE MOM TIME

My mom likes me to do more things with her while I’m off in the summer – lunch dates, playing cards with her and her friends, shopping, etc.  Together we host an annul “Girl’s Night Out” for the woman in our neighborhood!  We often show up in the same color palette even though we hadn’t previously discussed what we were planning to wear!

SHOP THE SHORTS:

Celebrated my Mom’s (on the far left) birthday with a lunch date and a little shopping!  I’ve mentioned in a previous post that she’s a hat fanatic.  Read the post here:  Hold onto Your Hats.   If I ever need a fancy hat, I’ll shop her closet first.  Yes, she purchased the hat she’s trying on in this picture…in case you’re wondering!  Also picture my Aunt Kathleen (in the middle) and mom’s dear friend Helen.  I was the youngster of the group…HA!

JUNE & JULY

We left for vacation at the end of June and into the first week of July.  July is my favorite month of the year for many reasons!  It’s typically hot! The hotter the better in my book!  I’m off for almost the whole month!  My birthday is July 4th!  Yep, I was born with a bang!  What do you mean the fireworks aren’t for me? HA!

VACATION ROAD TRIP

This year we headed out on a road trip, which I love every so often!  Len is a true road warrior and LOVES to drive!  He did all the driving!  Thank goodness as I dislike driving immensely!  We ticked off a bunch of bucket list items this trip: 8 days, 5 states, 2 national monuments, another Hard Rock checked off of our list, 1 TV show destination, amazing country side complete with wild animals, super friendly people all with a broken foot = fantastically fun birthday week!

SIOUX CITY, IOWA

Hard Rock Cafe and/or Hotel is always on our travel list of places to stop if there is one where we’re going!  We made this particular hotel/casino our first destination as it was about a 7 hour ride from home and half way to our final stop.  Why do we like Hard Rock so much?  It offers lots of music memorabilia.  Len is passionate for all things musical!  Together we enjoy looking at the artifacts that once belonged to various musicians.  The attention to detail at the Hard Rock is what I most enjoy!  This particular Hard Rock hotel had GREAT attention to detail!

We finally made it!

Guitar door handles!

Each elevator had song lyrics on the hand rails! Oh no!  Let’s go!  Love me some Prince!

Guitar pick room numbers and check out the doors to the rooms…  Each door was different!

Our room…

Loved that the pillow cases had embroidered guitars on them!

Every item in the room had a song lyric associated with it…even the laundry bag!

The lobby…I want one of these chairs!

The memorabilia…Michael Jackson and many others!

RAPID CITY, SOUTH DAKOTA

As we drove for miles and miles and miles, we were reminded that our country is beautiful and expansive and many wide open areas still exist!  The wind turbines really grabbed my attention as did the cows and how the huddle together and seemed to cluster all up in a corner despite having much space to roam!  I found myself wondering how they knew how to return to where they came from…inquiring minds wanted to know! HA!

My Road Warrior…

My “Road Warrior” was ecstatic that Sinclair gas stations still exist.  Apparently, it holds fond memories for him as a child!  He was more than happy to have his picture taken cleaning his windshield at the Sinclair!

WALL DRUG

“Wall Drug has a rich history in the state of South Dakota. Nestled in the city of Wall in the western part of the state, Wall Drug has grown from its humble beginnings in 1931 to a thriving oasis. Wall Drug offers dining, activities, gifts and souvenirs, visitor information and, of course, free ice water. Many road-worn travelers stop at Wall Drug and leave awake and refreshed, just like they did more than 80 years ago.”

“But it wasn’t always a thriving business, attracting 2 million visitors each year to the small town of Wall. Ted and Dorothy Hustead struggled to make Wall Drug successful in the early days. The city of Wall was somewhat affectionately known as “the geographical center of nowhere” back then and, to compound the challenges, the Great Depression was taking hold across the United States. But the story of Wall Drug was a story of success because one simple idea took root: Offering road weary travelers free ice water. Soon travelers would make a point to stop at Wall Drug to enjoy a refreshing break and they haven’t stopped coming to Wall Drug since.”

CRAZY HORSE

“Born in 1840 along Rapid Creek, Crazy Horse rose to become one of the most powerful and most recognized Native American figures of the Lakota Indian Tribe, second only to Sitting Bull. Cemented in history as a Native American war leader and fearless defender of Native American culture, territory and life, Crazy Horse has come to represent the freedom of the Native American spirit and the historic, continuing effort to preserve Native American culture within American society. His is an intriguing and vibrant legacy, inspiring the world’s largest mountain carving, currently in progress, in the Black Hills of South Dakota.”

We usually bring home sea shells from our travels.  This trip we brought home chunks of granite that have been excavated from the site!

A Lakota woman and her niece shared some of their history, language, customary clothing, music and dance!  I was thrilled to be able to participate in a “circle birthday” dance!  The Native American museum had many wonderful artifacts and history!

CUSTER NATIONAL FOREST & BLACK HILLS NATIONAL FOREST

Wild donkeys, prairie dogs, deer, and buffalo were a few of the animals we spotted roaming wild!  I was most intrigued by the prairie dogs as they communicated with each other sending warnings that people were near by!  My pictures don’t really do any of the beauty justice!

Prairie Dog…there were lots, and lots and lots of them every where!

Wild Donkeys

Tried to get this lone bull to raise his head for the picture…he didn’t want to cooperate!

DOWNTOWN RAPID CITY

Lots of fun things to do and see in downtown Rapid City!

Old Fire House converted into a terrific brewery and restaurant!

You can apply for space in this alley and create alley art/graffiti!

Bronze presidents on every corner!

MOUNT RUSHMORE

Fun Facts:

  • Thomas Jefferson was originally started on George Washington’s right. However, after 18 months they realized that it was not working. Jefferson’s face was dynamited off and carved on the other side.
  • It took 14 years to complete Mount Rushmore.
  • No one died while building Mount Rushmore.
  • The sculpture cost $989,992.32 to build.
  • There is a cave behind the carving called the “Hall of Records.” It was intended to house the story of Mount Rushmore but was never completed due to lack of funding.
  • George Washington’s face is 60 feet long.
  • 90% of the heads were carved with dynamite

Avenue of Flags

As the United States Air Force Heritage Band played patriotic songs, military personnel both current and past were acknowledged, Mt. Rushmore was lit up.  A truly patriotic experience!

JULY 4TH

It was recommended to us to go to the parade in downtown Piedmont!  I love a marching band, floats, kids…it felt like it was going to be a “baseball, Chevrolet and Apple Pie” kind of day! Oh … and Happy Birthday to me!

There weren’t any marching bands or floats…mainly cars – lots of cars, farm equipment and emergency vehicles.  Not what I imagined for a July 4th parade but we still managed to have FUN!

I think I need a pink ’57 Chevy!

This was Len’s first car, which he brought home in a bushel basket and had to put together!

DEVIL’S TOWER WYOMING

“Devils Tower is an igneous rock intrusion. The rock formation formed when magma from an underground volcano cooled within the earth’s crust during the Triassic period, between 225 and 195 years ago. Eventually the softer rock around the formation eroded away and left behind the 1,267 foot tall natural rock monument. It is believed that this occurred between 56 and 66 million years ago. Devils Tower was declared the first United States National Monument in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. Devils Tower is located in the Bear Lodge Mountains, and it is also part of the Black Hills. Devils Tower was not the original name. A misinterpretation by Colonel Richard Irving Dodge’s interpreter in 1875 during an expedition led to the name Bad God’s Tower, and eventually Devils Tower.”

We drove through Sturgis on our way.  More unbelievably beautiful country side, which slightly reminded me of Arizona expect much greener.  Stopped in Deadwood on the way back!  My broken foot kept me from hiking the path around the tower.  We did enjoy listening park ranger tell us both the facts and the Native American version of how the tower was formed.

Not sure of the attraction for all the motorcyclist to travel to Sturgis?!

DEADWOOD

The discovery of gold in the southern Black Hills in 1874 set off one of the great gold rushes in America. In 1876, miners moved into the northern Black Hills. That’s where they came across a gulch full of dead trees and a creek full of gold and Deadwood was born.

Practically overnight, the tiny gold camp boomed into a town that played by its own rules that attracted outlaws, gamblers and gunslingers along with the gold seekers. Wild Bill Hickok was one of those men who came looking for fortune. But just a few short weeks after arriving, he was gunned down while holding a poker hand of aces and eights – forever after known as the Dead Man’s Hand.

Calamity Jane also made a name for herself in these parts and is buried next to Hickok in Mount Moriah Cemetery. Other legends, like Potato Creek Johnny, Seth Bullock and Al Swearengen, created their legends and legacies in this tiny Black Hills town.

A must stop at Madame Peacock’s for two of my favorite things – Beer and Bling!

LAST LEG OF THE TRIP HOME:  LE CLAIR, IOWA

Le Clair, Iowa is home to the American Pickers show, which we’ve watched for years.  While I’m not much into antiques, I still knew it would be an awesome experience.  The stop did not disappoint!  It’s exactly as I imagined; and we saw many items in the shop that we’ve watched Mike and Frank pick over the years.  In addition to our granite rocks from Crazy Horse, we brought home some “smalls” from the Antique Archeology store.  Frank likes to pick “smalls”.  Smalls are tiny items like antique toys and tin cans.  We picked up a small metal car and three metal tins.

We didn’t get to see Mike and Frank. Apparently, they were on the road picking more antiques to preserve America’s history!  Len did pose by their pic!  Danielle comes in before and after hours or else she doesn’t get any work done because people like me want to talk with her and pose for pictures!  Go figure!  HA!

The Antique Archeology Store in LeClaire, Iowa is only two hours from home!  Traveling is great but there’s nothing like sleeping in your own bed!

Early August is always our annual Fundraiser for Scleroderma.  You might have seen my recent blog post on the event as well as how the disease effects me.  Click here to read the post!  We actually spend months preparing for it.  This year we raised over $17,000., which will continue to support research and hopefully a cure one day.

LAST DAY AT THE POOL

I always spend my last “official day off” of summer, which is the Friday before I go back, lounging at the pool!  That is when I feel as though my summer break is over and the “proverbial fat lady has sung”!

The remainder of my August is pretty much spent in meetings and preparing to return to work.  Our first day back was officially August 13th with teacher institute day.  My colleagues and I presented to over 120 staff similar to the start of this post!  We challenged them to be sure every child has a champion!  I love my job and am blessed to work with staff in a district I care about greatly!

NO MORE BOOT

I thought I’d end where my summer started – talking about my broken foot!  The good news is I’m back in shoes! It might take up to a year to fully heal, but so happy to be able to throw that boot away!  As you know I’m as passionate about fashion as I am about education!  Blessed to be doing both things I love so much!

So how was your summer?  What is your favorite highlight?  Leave us a comment!
