Lilly Pulitzer

A Millennial and a Mid-lifer Style Lilly Pulitzer

My darling millennial friend Brittany and I were discussing what type of post we would collaborate on for the spring. We did previous posts in the fall titled: The Fall 2018 “It” Color and Millennial and Mid-Lifer Shop and Style Fall Fashion Trends

Since Brittany is an avid fan of Lilly Pulitzer and has quit the collection of all things Lilly, she suggested our collaboration! My wardrobe consists of two Lilly items both of which are way too big on me now. A good problem to have but resulting in no options. Brittany graciously allowed me to wear her clothes some even with the tags still on them…if you’re a fashionista, removing tags is kinda a big deal! Therefore, I tried them on without removing tags – LOL!

Who is Lilly Pulitzer?

FTF decided to do a little digging to find out more about the person and the line as my knowledge was very minimal.

Lilly Pulitzer speaks to generations of rule-breaking sun-followers who celebrate the spontaneous bohemian spirit of Lilly Pulitzer. The company’s effortless fashions are truly born from an original. It all happened by accident, when in 1959-ish Lilly (McKim) Pulitzer—a stylish Palm Beach hostess and socialite whose husband Peter Pulitzer owned several Florida citrus groves—needed a project of her own. With Peter’s produce, she opened a juice stand on Via Mizner, just off Worth Avenue in Palm Beach. Lilly Pulitzer’s business was a hit, but squeezing oranges, lemons, limes, and pink grapefruit made a mess of her clothes. Realizing that she needed a juice stand uniform, Lilly asked her dressmaker to design a dress that would camouflage the stains. The result? A comfortable sleeveless shift dress made of bright, colorful printed cotton in pink, green, yellow and orange. Although her customers liked Lilly’s juice, they loved her shift dresses. Soon Lilly was selling more shift dresses than juice, so she decided to stop squeezing and focus on designing and selling her “Lillys.”

Pulitzer’s clothing line got a big boost, though, thanks to a very fashionable fan—Jackie Kennedy. The first lady was photographed wearing one of Pulitzer’s polka-dot shift dresses during a trip to Capri, Italy in 1962. As Pulitzer herself said, according to Town and Country, the business “took off like a zingo,” after that.

Lilly Pulitzer became a fashion sensation and a creator of authentic American resort wear as we know it. The brand is now more popular than ever and continues to create authentic printed styles straight from the in-house print design studio.

Lilly Pulitzer Fabric Names

Lilly Pulitzer names her prints! I don’t proclaim to have a clue about the names of the prints we tried on, but a true Lilly fans knows them all! That would be my millennial pal Brittany! Here is a small sampling of the names and prints. Do you have a favorite?

Let’s Play Dress Up – Throwback

As a self-proclaimed fashionista since a very young age, playing dress up is just in my blood! My brother wasn’t left out either as I would dress him up as well! He’d probably die if he knew I was including this picture of he and I circa the 1970’s. Although there aren’t any pictures of me at a super young age playing dress up, I have fond memories of tea parties and dress up!

Tea Party with My Faux Friends!
Apparently, I thought a sweatshirt could be worn as a mini-dress! It was the ’70’s!
My brother and I walking the runway in a fashion show! Circa 1973! I recall loving this dress with little daisy appliqués!
TRUTH! Love this Kate Spade quote!

Dress Up with Brittany’s Lilly Pulitzer Collection

Brittany invited me over to her house one cold day in February to dress up in some of her Lilly collection! And she’s got quit the collection! I felt like a kid in a candy shop!

Brittany’s Lilly Pulitzer Collection

ROMPERS

Although these look like dresses, they’re actually rompers and have built in shorts! I usually have challenges with rompers being long enough for my torso, but this fit good and was very comfortable. The bright colors are so fun and scream spring/summer! Both these rompers would be cute with a sweater or denim jacket. Brittany and I are heel girls and like to be fancy but these rompers could also be paired with cute flats or sandals and dressed down. We like our bling and accessories!

Brittany recently vacationed in Florida. Lilly is the perfect vacationing attire especially warm, tropical destinations! Many consider Lilly the perfect resort wear! How cute are Brittany’s nails and her accessories?! I adore the bracelet with the bow!

Lilly Pulitzer Dresses

I loved the two dresses we chose out of Brittany’s collection! The quality, colors and details are amazing!

In all honesty, I was super nervous about fitting into this dress! I’m 5’8″ so the length is pretty short on me! If you’re as tall as I am, sitting and bending over aren’t going to work too well. This would be a standing only dress for me … LOL! Similar to sitting only shoes! Can you relate? On a side note, I surely could never go commando in a dress this length! LOL Apparently, Lilly was a big fan of going commando and designed her dresses so she could do just that!

We wanted you to see the really cute coral zipper pull on the back of the dress and Brittany’s fun wrist party of bling and matching coral on the bracelet!

How gorgeous is this Lilly maxi dress on Brittany?! This is a winner for sure! Brittany and Brad are such a cute couple! Plus Brad keeps my girl Brittany spoiled with Lilly! He’s a keeper!

Lilly Pulitzer Pants and Vests

Similar to all of Lilly designs the pants are brightly colored fun prints! I’m beginning to see how one could easily become obsessed with all things Lilly! The prints and bright colors just make you want to smile!

How great that Lilly Pulitzer makes vests for those of us living in colder climates! Not sure of the material but these vests were super soft and the linings are great pops of Lilly colorful fun!

Lilly Pulitzer Swimsuit and Cover Up

For generations, Lilly Pulitzer has come to represent the resort lifestyle for women of all ages, stages and sunny destinations. From Palm Beach to Nantucket , Naples to Kiawah Island, Key West to the Hamptons, Lilly Pulitzer is for you if your go-to mood is happy, colorful and free.  (Happy to say I’ve been to Nantucket, Kiawah Island and the Hamptons! Sad to say I wasn’t wearing any Lilly! Perhaps I should go back!)

Print is the magic ingredient that has always set Lillys apart. From the spill-proof days to today, whether you’re opting for a printed shift or a printed bikini, these custom designed patterns are unique, one-of-a-kind and entirely yours. Pro tip: you can tell it’s a true Lilly if you can find “Lilly” hidden in the print!

And of course, no piece of clothing can put you in a festive mood quite like a Lilly! And how else do you want to feel when celebrating or vacationing?  Exactly. ( from Lilly Pulitzer Website)

Brittany looks totally adorable in her Lilly swimsuit and coverup! She is vacation perfection while in Florida!

Perhaps I’m late to the Lilly Pulitzer trend, but better late than never! I’m so grateful to Brittany for allowing me to play dress up with her wonderful Lilly collection and opening my eyes to a fashion style that wasn’t previously in my repertoire. I believe Brittany and I have demonstrated that Lilly Pulitzer can by styled by all ages – millennials and mid-lifers!

Stylish Monday Theme for March: Green

This month’s Stylish Monday features how we wear green. Do you have a favorite shade of green?

Color Meaning: Meaning of The Color Green. … Green, the color of life, renewal, nature, and energy, is associated with meanings of growth, harmony, freshness, safety, fertility, and environment. Green is also traditionally associated with money, finances, banking, ambition, greed, jealousy, and wall street.

Spring/Summer Pantone Shades of Green 2019

FTF decided to look into what shades of green are going to be trending for spring/summer 2019. I was curious to see if I already had things in my wardrobe that I could style and share especially since my initial thought was, “I don’t wear green!”

Correction – I have very few things in any shade of green!

#6. Pantone 17-0542 Pepper Stem

Numbered 17-0542, this zesty piece of nature will bring bountiful fields and green pastures to mind. It screams healthy, and was a staple for the men’s collection at Louis Vuitton. It might not be as bright as some of the other top spring 2019 colors by Pantone, but it certainly attracts attention, working perfectly as an accent piece with a brighter or deeper hue. Pepper Stem adds flavor to any outfit.

#11. Pantone 18-0416 Terrarium Moss

The third hue on the list of Pantone’s spring/ summer 2019 colors that brings nature to mind is Terrarium Moss, resulting in a new-found appreciation for the flourishing foliage around us. It is a deep version of Pepper Stem, with lots of both female and menswear lineups incorporating it into their designs. The yellows and greens are certainly natural pairings from among the top Pantone spring 2019 color trends.

CAMO

Camouflage might fall into the pepper stem and terrarium moss category of green; and I happen to have lots of it! The camo trend has been going strong for some time. Are you a fan of camo?

The Obvious Wear’in of Green – St. Patrick’s Day

Isn’t everyone Irish for one day a year – March 17th! Doesn’t everyone have something green to wear for the day to celebrate good ‘ole St. Patrick? Do you get dressed up and celebrate?

Here’s how my millennial friend Brittany and I styled our St. Patrick’s day looks. I couldn’t resist this rainbow tee with gold Lucky! I paired it with my gold glitter jewelry because there’s always a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!

Green Top

Green cold shoulder, ruffled top, floral pants with touches of green and green suede pumps round out my “emerald” green wardrobe! I purchased this whole look last year as I had nothing in solid green and wanted to match the pants with something other than pink! The details in both the top and the pants are what drew my attention! Love the side slit in the pants and the tied waist with a tassel drawstring!

The same green cold shoulder, ruffled top also paired well with my navy and white striped jacket. This picture was taken last year as were the pictures above.

Sweaters with Green

As mentioned, I only own the solid green top. Everything else has a touch of green in it like my sweater. I do own several things with touches of green. So if it’s not your color to wear think about items with green in them. I lean towards lime green and love it paired with this color of blue!

This coat is one of my FAVORITE purchases this winter! I’d wear it every day if I could. The good news is that it comes in lots of colors including green!

Here’s another sweater with a green stipe. Does that count as wearing something green? I say yes! Love these bright colors during the dull, cold, cloudy days of winter! I think you could pull this sweater off on St. Patrick’s day as it reminds me of the rainbow! Where’s my pot of gold?!

Green Try On at Stein Mart

There were lots of green options at Stein Mart so I was excited for my try ons! Here were my top picks that made it into the fitting room with me.

Stein Mart Green Try On

This high/low top has great lines, interesting sleeves and is figure flattering. I had black pants on already but it could easily be paired with white pants or jeans and dressed up or down so lots of options. Winner!

Top – Stein Mart

This green, black and white plaid top is super cute with fun sleeves and tie details. Decided to try it with a pair of green jeans!

Green Plaid Top and Green Jeans – Stein Mart

This green floral Vince Camuto dress is just darling and has POCKETS! It was so comfortable on but I knew I’d be freezing cold at this point in the year. Therefore, I paired it with this super cute crocheted sweater. Two cute looks! Do you ever style a dress with a sweater or top over it? It’s a clever way to get multiple looks.

I was really, really hopeful that these two jumpsuits would fit me. I have a long torso and am very difficult to fit when it comes to jumpsuits. These didn’t work on my body but thought they’re so cute they needed to be shared! I was a big fan of the green, white and black striped jumpsuit!

Jumpsuits – Stein Mart

This green pattern mix was so appealing! I was done trying on but decided to include it in this line up of green options!

Whole Look – Stein Mart

If green isn’t your color to wear, how about adding accessories to pull in the color! Stein Mart had a great selection of purses, jewelry and scarves!

How to Wear Leopard Print

FTF recently did a post on the snakeskin print trend. (Click HERE.) It appears we’re long over due for a post on leopard! Leopard print is always trending but this year it seems to be a major trend! You can think of leopard print as a neutral. It can be combined with other animal prints. Think pattern mixing – leopard, snakeskin, zebra, cheetah although this is a bit out of my comfort zone. I have seen many others do it effectively! Would you wear leopard head to toe? Perhaps head to toe is way too much for you. You can always just add a touch of leopard to almost any look and with any color! The other great thing about leopard print is that it can be worn all year long no matter the season, which makes pieces very versatile. That’s a total win!

FTF likes to tease our gal pal Lynn as she’s always about the leopard print and has been since as long as we can remember! This is your season to shine my dear friend! For more about our friend Lynn: Click HERE.

Leopard Sweaters and Cardigans

This particular sweater has a couple of things going for it. It’s super soft and has statement sleeves, which has been trending and continues to trend. This sweater is easily dressed up or down and could easily be paired with black or blue jeans and tan colored pants. This particular sweater is from Glik’s in Michigan.

Sweater – Glik’s

The sweater below is a lighter weight but also super soft and again easily dressed up or down. I wore this sweater to work with dress pants and then with jeans. If this is too much leopard for you, think of adding just a pop of leopard like the purse pictured. The coat is vintage and was once my mom’s.

Cardigans are on trend this season and continuing into spring. Cardigans are so easy to style and look flattering on every body type as it easily camouflages any mid-section flaws. Both the cardigans pictured are super soft and very warm. I’ve paired mine with my favorite faux leather leggings that I’ve been talking about since this past fall. Add some booties and accessories and your good to go!

What’s the difference between cheetah, leopard and jaguar prints you ask? Good question! I found myself wondering the same thing. I think this visual explains it best. Would you wear these prints together?

Leopard print goes so well with any color! I was attracted to the uniqueness of this sweater’s color (bright pink pop!) and the cut! It’s oversized sleeves (super trendy) and long tunic length make it perfect with leggings and forgiving on any mid-section flaws!

This short leopard jacket is a favorite of mine! It’s so soft and so warm. It’s easy to pair with a column of color. Simply add some other details and you’re ready to go! I’ve added my large tassel necklace, which is reversible, leopard purse and leopard pumps.

This leopard print coat is one of my FAVORITES! I purchased it last year and am so glad that I did! It’s super warm for the cold winters here in Illinois! It goes well with almost everything and every color! When I wear it, I don’t want to take it off! It’s kind of too big now, but I don’t care! It looks great with bright pops of color!

Leopard is now considered a neutral. I’m pushing myself to think of it as such and have seen many gals pair it with stripes, florals, etc. It looks great worn all ways so will be more of a preference and your comfort! Here are my leopard booties paired with my plaid pants…my effort at pattern mixing and using leopard as a neutral!

Invest in These 5 Accessories and You Won’t Regret It

Have you lost your style inspiration? Accessories are a great way of uplifting your wardrobe and giving you new ideas for styling your existing clothes. You can wear the same accessories with loads of different outfits and encourage your inner stylist to come out. Think about how you can use the following 5 accessories:

SCARVES

Scarves are an essential extra layer which can bring color, texture, pattern and more to your outfit. Bigger, cosy blanket scarves are ideal for the colder months, whereas lighter fabrics can work during summer days and evenings. Use them to add interest to more muted outfits, or find the ideal scarf to keep warm and stylish during colder months.

BAGS

We all love a designer bag – Marni handbags, clutches from Michael Kors, big bucket bags, practical crossovers. All the big names produce some bags you’ll fall in love with. But let’s face it – they’re expensive. So always choose a color and style that’s timeless for you. Something you can see yourself using time and time again.

SHOES

You can never have too many shoes, right? A shoe can transform an outfit – the same dress with a pair of heels or trainers, for example. It can be casual or dressed up. Make sure you have a mix in your wardrobe and you’ll always have the right finishing touch to any outfit.

https://unsplash.com/photos/4bUF4gWhEXc

HATS

Many of us shy away from hats, largely because we’re not sure what would suit us. But what’s better than trying them on and seeing? A hat is a good chance to be a bit braver with your style choices and try something a bit different. Of course, an occasion like a wedding is one of the best times to wear a hat, but make sure you choose one that suits your face shape.

https://unsplash.com/photos/yzoWRK9_1To

JEWELRY

Less may be more when it comes to jewelry, but it’s always nice to have options to choose from. Some people prefer statement pieces, whereas others will rely on classic materials and styles. Treating yourself, or someone special, to a piece of jewelry is always nice, as it’s something you’ll remember each time you put it on.

Wellness That Works

My Weight Loss Journey

began in January, 2018. I knew I needed to do something different as I weighed the most I had ever weighed my entire life. UGH! My husband and I are always trying to be healthy and do healthy things. We have tried many, many approaches over the years only to end up gaining back all the weight and more. It was time to go back to what I’ve always known has worked for me – WW (Weight Watchers).

WW was advertising that you could join and lose ten pound on them plus no joining fees. This promotion was right up this coupon, discount, sale loving queen’s alley!

January 2018

January 2018

We officially joined Weight Watchers and attended our first meeting/weigh in on January 17th, 2018. This picture was taken about that exact time. It was the heaviest I’ve ever been my adult life. I had no great expectations in fact I thought it might be nice to loss 5 – 10 pounds. As we age, it can become more difficult to take off the weight that piled on so quickly. At least that’s what I believed to be true.

Our Leader, Brigid, is amazing! She’s funny, encouraging, real, down to earth…my list could go on and on! She had been our leader when we were previous members so we were thrilled she was still around! I jokingly said to Bridig, “The Augustyns are back and bigger than ever!” That’s truly how I felt. The following week I lost 7.2 lbs…wait what?!!!! That’s crazy in one week! The Free Style program is so easy to follow and allows you to eat until you’re full. It’s not how much you eat! It’s what you eat. By meeting 4, I had lost a total of 9.6! My confidence with each week began to build and my limited thinking improved as well!

Brigid (WW Leader) and I (This pic wasn’t taken until April 2018)
I called this one of my “weigh in uniforms”!

FEBRUARY 2018

February 2018

My husband and I attend weekly meetings on Wednesday nights. It might sound silly but it’s a day of the week we truly look forward to and enjoy all the members of our group. It is their friendship, the camaraderie and feeling that we’re in this together that enables me to continue on my successful journey! We share tips and tricks and offer words of encouragement as well as celebrate each other successes! He and I go out to dinner to Chipotles afterwards. I create a bowl that’s filling and delicious! On a side note, we’ve made many friends there and know them by name! All super friendly and cheerful!

Wednesday Night Dinner at Chipotles

I knew that it would be critical for me to share my journey with those closest to me. Lori joined WW. My aunt joined WW. Each week we would text each other and cheer each other on as weigh in approached.

These are the types of things we’d send to each other! Gal Pal support is the BEST!

By the end of February, I lost a total of 12.6! I fulfilled the requirement of losing 10 pounds within the first two month of joining and received two months free! I love a good challenge and I love all things FREE! Two checks in the positive column!!

March 2018

March 2018

In March, we only attended three meetings due to the fact that we were out of town during Spring Break, which was the last week in March. We went away over Spring Break to Las Vegas. I was very nervous about being gone on vacation, not having a scale to weigh myself and tracking my intake properly. One of the best things about WW is the app for tracking. I did my best to guess point amounts. I discovered that restaurants will custom make meals for you that aren’t on their menus. I was slightly embarrassed to order my usual 4 to 5 scrambled eggs but I did it! It was at this point that I began to realize I could no longer consume the quantity of food I was used to eating. Throughout the trip I ate within reason, enjoyed cocktails and shared a desert with my hubbie. I did not feel deprived and enjoyed my trip!

My celebrations on this trip included that my swimsuit was too big and I felt so much more confident walking around the pool. Our young cabana girl commented on my suit, sunglasses and nails! I always put that in my winning column especially when its a compliment from a young 20 something! At WW, we call these non-scale wins, which are equally as important!

Upon returning to our meeting the week after break, I lost 3.4 lbs! Besides our first week, that was the most I lost in a one week time frame and I had been gone on vacation! MAJOR WINNING!!! Grand total lost 19.6. Getting so close to my 20 lb charm!

April 2018

At the April 11th weigh in, I lost 1 lb for a total of 20.8 lbs! Words can’t describe how thrilled I was and still in shock that I was doing so well working the program as it’s intended! I received my 20 lb charm…happy dance! Love the charms and celebrating!

I believe it was at this point that others began to notice and comment. I have no qualms about sharing my journey and how I was doing it. In sharing, others became interested and wanted to join. It also created a sense of accountability for me.

By the end of April, I lost a total of 22.6. I wanted to celebrate my 20 lb loss with a Peanut Buster Parfait with extra nuts at Dairy Queen. That is until I looked up the points. 33 points, which is more than I get in a day! That is why I’m at WW! HA! Don’t get me wrong. We could have done it but I CHOOSE not to do it!

May 2018

May 2018

By May, I’m being to feel more confident, which is odd since I didn’t feel as though I wasn’t confident prior to now. It’s a difficult thing to explain and I’m not quit sure I can do it just. Suffice it to say I felt as though I had a spring in my step! It became necessary to get new pants that fit better. A great problem to have and as you know I LOVE to SHOP!

On May 16th, I earned my 25 lb charm! I had lost 26.4 lbs. at weigh in!

By the final weigh in on May 30th, I was down 30.2 lbs.! Pinch me! There aren’t any more charms until -50 lbs. I think WW should up their charm game! That’s a long haul from 25 to 50…just my opinion!

June 2018

June 2018

At this point, I began to hear things from others like, “Wow! I had no idea you even had 30 lbs to loss!” This made me happy as that has been the premise behind Fashion Trends and Friends all along! It’s been our mission to share how you can look cute and trendy no matter your age or your size! If you recall, Lori blogged about having to decide to shop or not to shop when she was heavier. (To read that post, click here: I Gained 25 Pounds and Nothing Fits! To Shop or Not to Shop?)

By the end of June, I’d lost a total of 33.4 lbs. I don’t recall for sure but this might have been when I began to think about the fact that my BMI might actually be attainable, which would mean hitting my goal weight! I didn’t dwell on that too much as I didn’t want to become discouraged along the way and feel as though it was sooooooo far away!

July 2018

July 2018

Heading into summer break I was not sure how I’d do with not having the structure of going to work every day. I was nervous about managing my freedom and falling off the wagon. However, I’m blessed to report that I totally figured it out. Many times I’m asked what a typical breakfast, lunch and dinner are for me. With the Free Style program I rely heavily on the 0 point foods and build my meals around that. I tend to be a one track pony and am very happy/content to eat the same thing day in and day out. Once I find things I enjoy eating and that work for me, I can easily eat them daily. Summer brought pool time, vacation time and continued WW success! I must not forget to mention new swimsuits as the old were hanging on me when wet…a good problem to have! If you would have told me in January that by July I’d be posting pictures of myself in my swimsuit, I would have told you NO WAY IN H*LL!!!

New Swimsuit

By the end of the July, my total weight loss was 36 lbs.

August 2018

August 2018

I had to make a rule for myself that if I put something on and it was too big for me, I needed to gift it to someone else and get rid of it. While I tend to love my clothes, I decided I couldn’t keep my larger sizes thinking I might need them again one day! The top in this picture is one that I held onto for quit some time even though I hadn’t worn it in probably years!!! (Yes, I know you’re not suppose to do that!) Why…because it’s too body hugging and not figure forgiving at all! In the past when I’d worn it, I wore a jacket over it to hid my midsection. I was able to wear it with confidence and without hiding myself behind other layers. Have you ever had the experience when you wear something and feel so confident and happy? This was one of those moments for me!

In August, we return to work. Over summer break, I don’t see a lot of the staff that I work with and found it so much fun to see everyone again! I was met with so many compliments. The weight loss was probably more noticeable since more time had elapsed vs seeing everyone every day.

Friends began to call me skinny, skinny minny….terms I’ve never associated with myself and still don’t. I’m not going to lie – I love being called skinny! It’s a whole new world for me! At times, I’m not even aware that it’s me their talking to!

By the end of August, I’d lost 36.6 lbs. I’d hit the dreaded plateau I’d heard everyone talking about! UGH!

September 2018

September 2018

You’ve probably noticed that since May I use my tripod to take my pictures instead of my selfie stick. I didn’t even really realize that I’d made the transition. As previously mentioned, I wasn’t really aware that my weight impacted me. However, it did more than perhaps I allowed myself to realize.

I found it odd that people also began to tell me that I looked happier. I didn’t feel as though my happiness and confidence had shifted but perhaps others saw what I wasn’t seeing or feeling. I guess pictures don’t lie.

By the end of September, my total weight loss was 39.2. I was beginning to feel as though my journey was now at a snail’s pace. Len often reminds me that slow and steady wins the race. A slow weight loss is far better than a gain. Consider losing .6 lbs for a year. That would be 31.2 lbs in a years time. Far better than gaining or even staying the same! I needed all these pep talks! One of our members, Patti, always talks about being “in too deep” . This resonates with me! I’ve come so far to feel discouraged or to allow myself to slip!

October 2018

October 2018

October brought new fashion options for me that I would have absolutely NEVER considered in the past! If you follow FTF, you know that I’ve become obsessed with my faux leather leggings! I’d wear them every day as they’re so comfortable and now figure flattering. I ordered these on Amazon (huge fan of Amazon shopping but be aware of sizing!). When they arrived, I took them out of the packaging and showed them to my husband! There was NO WAY these were going to fit even one leg! I was sure of it! He encouraged me to try them on any way! Well surprise surprise! They not only fit, but I LOVE THEM! It did take some initial courage to wear them, but eventually I even participated with other fashionable friends in a collaboration on ways to style them. To read that blog: click HERE

I still find myself not thinking things will fit often saying to myself, “Who am I kidding?!” Still not believing the new sizes I’m now able to wear!

By the end of October, I hit my goal and am in my BMI!!! I’ve lost 41 lbs.

November 2018

November 2018

With November comes the start of the holiday season and lots of eating and temptations. On top of that, my focus now becomes figuring out how to maintain my weight. I’ve proven I’m awesome at gaining weight! I’ve proven I know how to loose weight! I now have to figure out how to maintain my weight…a new challenge. I decided I wanted to continue to loose some more weight so that I had a cushion. In order to become a lifetime member, you need to go for six weeks and be within 2 pounds of goal. Once you become a lifetime member, you no longer need to pay the monthly fee provided you weigh in at least once a month and are within 2 pounds of goal weight!

By the end of November, I’d lost another 2.4 lbs! I’m feeling great heading into December! On a side note, I think it’s important to state that I ate and drank everything I wanted on Thanksgiving! I did not deprive myself! That for me is the beauty of WW!

Lastly, I became a lifetime member on November 22! SUCCESS! I DID IT!!!

A funny I shared with Lori in one of texts!

December 2018

Winter break, Christmas, New Years all came and went! I managed to maintain with a weight loss of 1.6. Talk about doing a happy dance! I’d made it through the holidays again enjoying the things I like to eat and drink. I’m pretty sure in years gone by I’d gain the typical 5 to 10 lbs. Len used to buy me the BIGGEST peanut M & Ms for my stocking – one of my favorites! I think it might have been the two pound bag. This year he got me a bag, which I ate over several days!

It’s hard to believe that almost a year has gone by since we started on this journey! I’m so unbelievably grateful for this process and this journey! I recently shared at one of my meetings, with the chance they might all throw something at me, that I’m grateful that the weight loss was slow and steady. In the moment, we’d like the weight to come off quickly. I know for me I wouldn’t be equipped to manage keeping it off and in a good head space to continue to make good decisions!

January 2019

January 2019

I’ve included this final picture of me in my new “workout” clothes! It’s important to share that my entire weight loss was by following the plan. I rarely if ever did anything physical. Not that I’m proud of that but want to be real with you. Two years ago I was fit and heavy. When Len was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and had his first surgery in February 2017, I fell off the workout wagon. Now I’m thin and not fit. My goal for this year is to be able to be thin and fit at the same time! I don’t set resolutions rather goals.

We’ve joined a new gym, which I’m excited about! I’m proud to report that I’ve done a pretty good job working out so far this year. My goal this year also includes trying new physical activities that I’ve never done before. First on my list is aerial yoga! Stay tuned for a post on that experience!

Here I am a year later! I used to make lots of excuses for myself on why I couldn’t do this weight loss thing! Never did I believe this would be possible for me! If I can do this, anyone can do this! It’s never too late! You’re never too old! Every step is worth it! If I can help you and encourage you in any way, I’m happy to do so and help you along your journey!

Final Thoughts:

HOW WE WEAR RED

February is the month of LOVE – Valentine’s Day and American Heart Month, which is typically associated with wearing red. Are you a fan of wearing red; or are you red wearing challenged? Either way the following are some tips on how to wear it:

Red Jackets

Red Jackets

A red jacket can easily be paired with so many options! Lori paired it with a leopard scarf and jeans for a more casual look. Cindy paired hers with a classic white tee and a gold and red necklace. I paired mine with a graphic tee a black dress pants. A red jacket can easily be dressed up or down and worn year round!

SHOP RED JACKETS:

Red is Also Great in Outer Wear
Red Pea Coat Paired with a Red Plaid Scarf

Red Tops:

One red top styled two ways and easily worn in all seasons paired with red striped black pants! Another easy way to add a touch a red!

Try On at Stein Mart
Lori choose this Bare Shoulder Red Top… She pushed herself out of her typical black and white box! HA!

Adding a touch of red by wearing a red plaid top is an easy way to incorporate red into any look and plaid has been having a major moment!

SHOP RED TOPS:

Red Pants & Red Jeans:

This pink and red combination just might be my favorite for this post! The reason mainly being that it’s way out of my “comfort zone”! I would have never put these two together had I not seen it done on many IG posts and thought I’d give it a try! Voila! I love it! Would you wear pink and red together? I’m also considering pairing these red pants with a purple sweater!

Loft Pink Sweater & New York and Company Red Pants

Same red pants and switched out the top for this Love embroidered tee and the embroidered cardi! The tank under the tee is covered with sequins and sparkles! You could also pair this look with black pants if you don’t want as much red. I happen to love wearing red and think this is a great Valentine’s look. The tee is now too big on me so I gathered the side and used a rubber band to shorten and tighten it. You could also do this look with jeans or leggings…you know I love wearing my faux leather leggings any chance I get!

Weight Watching Update

Part 1 of 2

My WW Journey – 1 Year Anniversary

The following video is an update of the WW (once known as Weight Watchers) Program and our (Julie and Lori’s) thoughts regarding the changes.

I did hit my goal and become a life time member since the filming of this video. Lori continues on her journey. My journey has shifted gears from loosing to trying to maintain and perhaps loose a little more. It’s a whole new world as I’ve proven I’m great at gaining. Know how to loose weight but maintaining is a new journey for me!

Weight Loss and Wellness

My Journey

began in January, 2018.

This promotion was right up this coupon, discount, sale loving queens alley!

More to come…hope you join us for Part 2!

Do you have any weight and health tips for us? Please leave us a comment!

FRIEND FEATURE

Fashion Trends and Friends is as much about FRIENDS as we are about FASHION!

Today we’d like to introduce you to one of our favorite fellow Life and Style Bloggers Over 50!

INTRODUCING NINA BANDONI OF:

SHARING A JOURNEY  Ageless Life & Style

FTF: What is your background

NINA: As a kid, I was a dreamer. I was always telling stories and was the one who made up most of the games we played in the neighborhood, especially when they centered around dressing up and my getting to be the princess!

I wanted to be a writer, or a Princess, but my parents weren’t exactly thrilled with those choices.  They kept telling me Princess wasn’t a viable occupation; and were afraid I’d starve as a writer because in their minds, all writers starved. (I still think I could have made a go of either of them!)

I went to business school instead, and worked in banking and community development.  In 2000, after my daughter was born,  I started my own business so I could have more flexibility; my company, Community Development Concepts, provides strategic planning and project management for non-profit organizations.  I can’t believe the company is almost 20 years old, and still going strong.

FTF: Why did you decide to blog?

NINA: I always loved to write; I wanted to share some of the things I was learning as I hit midlife and struggled through it’s transitions (I’ll be 60 on my birthday in July!)  Blogging seemed to be a good fit.  I completely love it.  I wake up and bound out of bed every morning full of ideas for posts.  Sharing a Journey started as an inspirational blog, but when we shot a few fashion photos on a whim, the blog took another direction and we added fashion and beauty.  It surprises me that it’s turned out this way, but I love styling clothing, fashion and beauty so I can’t complain.

FTF: How would you describe your fashion?

NINA: I find it hard to describe my style because it sort of flows from my imagination and I don’t really know how others see me.   I think, looking at the photos and considering how I feel when wearing certain outfits, I must be classic.  I love dresses and suits most and struggle with more causal styles, I’m especially tired of boho and skinny jeans right now.  (Though I still wear skinny jeans.)

FTF: What fashion tips do you have for us?

NINA: Have fun with fashion, experiment…go try things on…laugh a little—if it doesn’t work out you can always take it off and try something else!  When trying things on, be sure to look at yourself in a  big mirror and from a distance.  Close up, things look much different than when you are standing back a bit and can see the lines and fit better.  Most of all, don’t let other people’s rules govern you or your style.

FTF: Where is your favorite place to shop?

NINA: I like Nordstrom the best for in-store shopping for my self. I take my mother to Talbots and often end up buying for myself when I’m there; (I love taking their classic pieces and adding my own twist to them.) I’ve been enjoying Reiss and Karen Millen on line both are from the UK—I just purchased a Reiss jump suit for evening and I’m obsessed.  Roger has had to take me out on numerous date nights so I can get ample wear out of it!

FTF: Who is your style icon?

NINA: I love Victoria Magrath, from In the Frow, she is a young blogger with amazing style; I find her super inspiring. I think it’s important to follow some younger fashion bloggers as well as those in our age group.  I just scrolled through my Pinterest boards and I would say Grace Kelly would be my retro favorite; I pinned a ton of photos of her on my Fashion Icons board.  I would happily wear any of her outfits. Of course she rocked 1950’s movie star style to a T, which is right up my alley.

Victoria McGrath from In the Frow
Grace Kelly

FTF: What decade/era speaks to you the most with regards to fashion?

NINA: I love the 1950’s right now.  I’ve been watching several television shows set in the ‘50’s and have been loving the color palettes, the silhouettes and the fully accessorized looks women used to wear. My mother used to have tons of hats, handbags and matching shoes.  I used to sneak into her closet and play in her clothes when I was young.

My father and grandmother were both majorly interested in fashion and style.  My father always bought me classics; I always mixed in a little glam, something trendy and a bit of a retro movie star vibe for fun.

NINA’S FINAL THOUGHT: One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is not to apologize for being your authentic self.  I’m a fashionista. I love wearing beautiful things, but it’s not all about how we look on the outside; I’m a huge believer in doing the inner work as well.

We hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know Nina of Sharing A Journey! If you’re not already following her, we highly recommend you do so. Click the links below:

Trending Now: Snakeskin Print

Leopard isn’t the only animal print dominating the fashion world this season. Rummaging through my closet revealed the fact that I had far more snakeskin print than I realized. Heading out to shop the trend I was surprised at how many snakeskin items I was able to find at almost every store I went into.

Looks From My Closet:

This first look was initially featured on our blog post titled: Eight Ways to Style Faux Leather Leggings. Click: Here. This snakeskin print Michael Kors top has been in my closet for so long that I don’t even recall how long. The detailing is what attracted me to it – metal studs along the shoulder/arm area. This top is easily styled with jeans, dress pants and here – my favorite new staple item – faux leather leggings along with my silver booties. I’d deem this a kind of edgy, casual look.

Michael Kors Snakeskin Print Top

The next two tops are bolder snakeskin print tops with brighter pops of color – turquoise and ombre shades of pink. I styled both tops with my faux leather leggings, sock booties and snakeskin print purses.

Snakeskin Print Top with Pops of Turquoise – From My Closet (Macy’s)
Turquoise Snakeskin Print Clutch – From My Closet
Snakeskin Print Top with Pink Ombre – Knotted the Top to Change the Look (Top from My Closet purchased at Carson’s)
Same Top without Being Tied
Added My Pink Snakeskin Print Bag
Both of these tops can be dressed up or dressed down. They’d pair easily with jeans. I’m linking the faux leather leggings below as you know I LOVE THEM and they pair so well with everything plus the price of $15.99 can’t be beat!

SHOP THE LEGGINGS:

This next snakeskin print tunic has also been in my closet for a very long time. It’s from Stein Mart and has iridescent sequins at the neckline, hemline and around the wrists. I typically wear it in the spring/summer paired with white pants. True confessions – I style things one way and don’t usually try to think of other ways to style them. Since starting my blog and social media platforms, I’ve been inspired by all my fashionista friends and have begun to expand my styling options and to think differently. Before doing today’s post, I would have never thought to wear this tunic in the winter. Hope you are more creative than I am!

Changed Up the Look by Adding the Cardi (from Stein Mart) and Scarf. It Could Also Be Paired with the Gray Jeans I’m Wearing Below.

This cardi is so unique both in color and style. Perhaps you don’t like an all over snakeskin print so consider something with some touches of the print. This cardi also has interesting detailing such as the gold and metal. The combination of grey with bronze, gold is unexpected but very interesting. This cardi and top are from Stein Mart many, many years ago. The gray jeans are new from Stein Mart. This is a casual look I’d wear out – on this particular day a doctor’s appointment and shopping!

Bronze/Gold and Gray with Metal Details

This next look is styled around the snakeskin print scarf and snakeskin print flats. The infinite scarf has two tones of snakeskin print with a touch of gold. The flats, which I typically don’t wear, have a gold shimmer and gold studs on the heels. This is a more casual and subtle way of incorporating the trendy print. (The scarf and flats are from my closet. The scarf was from Express and the flats were from Target.)

Try Ons:

I had so much fun doing try ons for this post! Mainly I was super surprised to see how much snakeskin print is currently available in the stores! First up is a try on at Macy’s. This Michael Kors top is currently available and also comes in a dress. The built in pattern mix of snakeskin print and stripes adds interest along with the statement sleeve and lace up/gold grommets. This tunic is easily dressed up or down – casual or dressy.

Next, stop was Express. Express has my all time favorite (best fit, length and comfort in my opinion) leggings! They had black snakeskin print leggings. The pictures don’t truly show the pattern so it’s rather subtle. However, I thought you’d still like to see the fit. They come in black and red. I’d pair them with a long sweater or tunic, which can be dressed up or worn casual. This would be a great option if you don’t care for a bold snakeskin print.

H & M had a large selection of snakeskin print items. I felt like I hit the jackpot! Cha Ching! I tried on a tee that would be so easy to style so many ways and a skirt that was way out of my comfort zone. It’s a silky material, which I was sure would be body clinging and surely unflattering on me but for the sake of pushing myself and knowing I could choose not to include it I forged forward. To my surprise I loved everything about the skirt and I styled it two ways in the fitting room. For under $15.00, it’s a winner and came home with me! So glad I stepped out of my box! There will be many ways to style it…think a white sweater and white booties or black top and black booties. It will also transition well into other seasons.
