Stylish Monday

Cozy Chic

This month’s Stylish Monday theme is “Cozy Chic”! It’s a perfect theme for me and for once I wasn’t in a full on panic thinking, “What do I have to wear that fits this theme?” It’s similar to I have a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear…LOL! Living in Illinois I have plenty of “Cozy Chic” and perhaps have issues with the number of sweaters I own! When I think “Cozy Chic”, I think all kinds of sweaters in all kinds of styles and colors! Sweaters can be dressed up or down and styled to fit all occasions! What comes to mind for you when you think “Cozy Chic”?

Cardigans

Cardigans are a great way to be cozy chic throughout the fall, winter and even spring months here in Illinois! They are figure flattering on all body types and cover up your backside well! That’s what I like! Cardis are easy to dress up or down and pair well with leggings or skinny jeans and pants. Although I’m not much of a dress or skirt wearer, cardis can also be styled with both. As you can see, I have several in my wardrobe! The leopard/cheetah print cardis were purchased last year; and I’m wearing them again this year! The cardi on the far right was purchased this year. You can find cardis in almost every color!

This camo cardi was purchased last year at Target! I’ve worn it multiple times and styled it various ways! Here it’s paired with gray jeans; and below it’s paired with gray leggings and a solid white blouse, worn to work and out casually!

Leggings: from Soft Surroundings gifted to me

This last cardi was also purchased last year. I’m not usually a fan of sweaters with hoodies as it adds extra bulk in my coats and who really wears the hood? Not me! In Illinois during the winter months, heavy coats are a must! The stripes and colors drew my attention!

Leggings from last year: Amazon

Loved this striped cardigan paired with the leopard print cami! As you can see, Lori and I styled it very similarly. Paired with jeans is casual and can also be dressed up with skinny black dress pants. This cami is also reversible and is solid black, which is also a great match for this cardi!

Embellished & Metallic Sweaters

When I think chic, I think unique, which lends itself to all things embellished with sequins (big and small), graphic images or sayings! I’m naturally attracted to embellishments and unique statement pieces. This fashion statement might not be for everyone but can be fun so go ahead and try pushing yourself out of your comfort zone!

This sweater is covered in small multi-colored sequins so I’ve included a close up so you could see it in better detail. I paired it with my leather pants, my sequined heeled booties and wore it to my Christmas get-together with Lori and Lynn. As you can see, we all like to be fancy! We’re like minded gal pals!

Sequin Sweater (can also be worn off the shoulder): New York and Company
Leather Pants: Express
Glitter Heeled Booties (from my closet)
Lori – Left
Lynn – Center

Initially, I was going to pass up this cropped sweater because it was cropped; and it was in a store that I never shop as it was my impression that the particular store caters to a younger audience. (The store went out of business.) I’m glad I didn’t limit myself. This cropped sweater pairs great with high waisted dress pants that tie at the waist. Since high waisted jeans are also trending, it can be styled more casual. I work a black tank underneath just for some added coverage.

Black High Waisted Pants: Express
Gold Metallic Shoes (from my closet)

Maybe you prefer to only have a touch of embellishment. You can find sweaters that are “Cozy Chic” with minimal bling like this turtleneck. The only embellishment is on the neckline. Wearing all of one color is called column dressing and can add height and thin you out. I couldn’t resist adding my plaid with rhinestone heel booties, which were originally feathered in this blog post: HERE along with my white fury coat!

Red Turtleneck Sweater: Macy’s I.N.C.
White Fury Coat: Express
Red Pants (my closet)
Plaid Booties: Dillard’s Betsey Johnson

Dream Away…why of course! Love the message and the embellishment! I’ve worn this sweater dressed up with a blazer as well as with jeans! It’s no surprise that I like to be extra especially extra fancy but you can almost always wear things multiple ways to get an extra bang for your buck! I think embellished sweaters scream “Cozy Chic” and aren’t just for the holidays!

Dream Away (last year): Macy’s I.N.C.
Star Jeans (last year): Macy’s I.N.C.
Plaid Jacket (last year): Stein Mart

Sweaters with metallic threads add some extra bling and chic! They can be found almost anywhere and are easily dressed up or down. Here are three sweaters all with some type of shimmer or metallic threads (not easily photographed…ugh!). I’ve worn them with the same jeans but they could also be dressed up by pairing them with dress pants!

Sweaters in All Colors and Styles

On occasion we get an unseasonably warm winter in Illinois, or we get a few days that are warm usually in the 40’s or 50’s! The day after Christmas this year was in the 50’s. We had planned to spend the day with our granddaughter going ice skating at Millennium Park, went to the world’s largest Starbucks Reserve and Chicago Botanical Garden light show. Mr. FTF got some great pictures of her first time on the ice. I hadn’t been skating in over 20 years but managed not to fall! All this to tell you that this fair isle sweater was a perfect way to be “Cozy Chic” for all of our activities and didn’t need to be covered up with a coat until that evening!

The Bean in Millennium Park
Fair Isles Sweater: Saks off 5th
Striped Jeans: Express

This fair isle sweater was an immediate winner for me due to the unique, bright color along with some silver metallic accents! It pairs great with my grey jeans. It could also be worn with blue jeans, white jeans, leggings or dress pants. It’s pretty long and if you’re shorter than me (5’8″) it could be worn like a tunic.

Fair Isle Sweater: Loft
Jeans (my closet)

Playing off of the white in the sweater, I opted to wear my white shearing/reversible coat! This particular day I was off to several doctor’s appointments, a lunch date and shopping with my girlfriend Cindy!

In Illinois, the winter months can seem to drag on and on and on! I tire of all of the dark colors over time. Therefore, finding sweaters with bright non-traditional winter colors is often very appealing to me! I’m a fan of bright colors no matter the season!

Striped Sweater (my closet)
Red Pants (my closet)

Animal prints continue to be on trend so go wild! Here are some of my newer collection of animal print sweaters! I think it goes without saying that sweaters are easily paired with anything: jeans, leggings, dress pants, skirts and even worn over dresses! You’re only limited by your imagination and fashion sense/comfort! Animal print sweaters are definitely “Cozy Chic”!

This month Andy asked each of where we live and what our weather is like at this time of year. I thought this was a great idea so am sharing each beauties response!

Nina Bandoni of Sharing a Journey
Nina lives in Florida. “The winters are very mild and temperatures fluctuate between 50 and 80.  We have a few colder days in January.  Only people who live in Florida bundle up and wear jackets in the winter. The tourists wear shorts and flip flops no matter what! “
Suzanne Bell of Ask Suzanne Bell
Suzanne lives “in Los Altos, a town located in Northern California (much different weather than Southern California). We live in the heart of Silicon Valley, 5 miles from Palo Alto and Stanford University.

We have year-round mild weather. I like to say we have 2 seasons…cold and hot. We can get bouts of rain (last snow was when I was in second grade), but as you can see in my photo, a light coat is really all you need – unless you head to San Francisco or the Coast. We all have puffer vests and puffer coats around here, but those pics aren’t that chic.”
Nancy Baten of Nancy’s Fashion Style

Nancy lives in the Netherlands. “We have grey winters, with less sun and a lot of rain. Normally it’s about 5 degrees Celcius in Winter. We perhaps will have about 7 days of snow. Which is 7 days to much for me!”
Andrea Schwartz of Pearls and Pantsuits
Andy lives in northwest Louisiana, “where our weather is whatever it wants to be! It’s 71 degrees as I type this! The next few months will probably be rainy and cool, but who knows? Not even the weather man!”
Cindy Scurry at Middle Sister Style Blog
Cindy lives in Denver, Colorado. Sunny but cold!
Robin LaMonte of Hello I’m 60ish
Robin lives in Atlanta, Georgia. “Atlanta weather seldom calls for a winter coat except for a couple of weeks in February, but I hear we’re expecting a colder winter than usual!
I always wear wraps and gloves in the winter here in Atlanta.”
Nicole Molders of High Latitude Style
Nicole lives in Alaska. “Our winter is 7 months long and can have anything from around the freezing point to way below -40F or -40C.” See this post for the absolute Must-wear at -40 https://highlatitudestyle.
com/see-why-40-below-was-great-for-a-bikini-look/

Emma Peach of Style Splash
Emma is from the UK – “currently living in Cheshire in the North West. The weather here has been mild and wet so far over Winter but we often get a cold spell in January/February.”
Hilda Smith of Over the Hilda
Hilda lives in Ireland. “Ireland and can be a little cold but we have had a lot of rain this winter….No snow but some cold north winds at times.”

BOOT TRENDS

5 Boot Trends for Winter 2019

Boots can be an easy way to elevate your look, add detail and be on trend! Here are the 5 most current boot trending styles. Do you have any of these in your closet already?

1.Combat Boots

As spotted on the Fall 2019 runways and street style scene, combat boots are trending in a big way. From knee-high lace-up designer combats to classic Doc Martens, the ’90s-inspired (were the 90’s really that long ago…LOL) boots come in all shapes and styles this season. Whether worn with a contrasting feminine dress or blue jeans, the boot looks effortlessly cool and is sturdy enough to withstand wet or sloshy winter weather.

The closest I come to owning and wearing combat boots (these actually might be considered more of a motorcycle boot) are these pearl, stud and buckle embellished pair! They were purchased last year but I’m still wearing them this year. This trend is slightly out of my comfort zone as I generally prefer wearing heels. Here’s how I’ve styled them several ways over the past year. They’re easily styled with faux leather leggings, jeans and dress pants! I’ve also seen them worn with skirts…the options are pretty limitless depending on your style and comfort!

2. Shearling Accents

Ideal for adding both extra warmth and luxe detailing, boots with shearling accents make for this winter’s coziest boot trend. Whether you go for over-the-knee or ankle boots, you’ll be nice and warm no matter how low the temperatures drop.

These wedge shearling accent booties proved to be super warm during our Chicago Midlife Influencer’s outing to Morton Arboretum’s Illumibrew!

These shearling lined bootie wedges received lots of compliments! They were on sale and are great dupes for some higher end versions! Remember you don’t have to spend a lot to look like it!

3. Knee High Boots

Chic enough for the office and durable enough for the winter streets, knee-high leather or suede boots will be your trusted shoe MVP this season. Go for a block heel version that’s both polished and sturdy. I feel as though these are easier to walk in and don’t fall in-between the paver blocks of my school’s parking lots…a pet peeve that ruins many heels! UGH!

This look was worn out to dinner with my Aunt and Uncle. Then we had a date night after at the Barnes and Noble! I had forgotten how much I enjoy hanging out in a book store. I love the smell and feel of new books!

4. Lug Sole Boots

Chelsea boots will never go out of style, but this season’s lug-sole trend makes the shoe more wearable for winter than ever before.

I currently don’t own any lug sole Chelsea boots. However, I appreciate the trend of the thicker heeled boots as previously mentioned they’re easier to walk in and are still stylish! These are one of my newer pairs! I love the metal stud details!

These white booties were mainly purchased because of the thicker heel! I like the tassel zipper pull! They were purchased on our trip to Saugatuck, MI. (To read about our weekend get away, click here: Fall Weekend Get Away)

5. Snow Boots

Every stylish woman dreads the days she has to put on her snow boots. But this season, designers are making the winter boot look cooler than ever before. From faux fur details to colorful laces and platform soles, you can finally feel fashionable in your snow boots.

I really haven’t had to wear mine yet, which I’m grateful for in terms of the fact that we haven’t had enough snow to warrant wearing them!

Holiday Style

Stylish Monday – 5 Pieces You Need for the Holidays

Tartan plaid has become my winter/holiday obsession! It actually started with the Betsey Johnson booties! My quest was then on to find the perfect plaid blazer! While Tartan plaid can be considered a classic, it can be mixed with something a little more edgy like my faux leather leggings! This was my holiday look I wore to the Advent by Candlelight event with my mom! I even got asked, “Which came first? Your booties or the blazer?”

Tartan Plaid Blazer: Venus
Faux Leather Leggings: My Closet (Amazon)
Plaid Booties: Betsey Johnson from Dillards
Mom and Me- Advent by Candelight

These boots get so much attention! I had a lady follow me until she caught up to tell me how fantastic they are and wanted to know where I got them. The heels are a real show stopper! Blinged out heels – be still my heart! I love them so much I wore them two days in a row. Truth be told I’d love to wear them every day!

1. The Statement Sweater

Warm, cozy and ready for holiday dressing! A sweater can be easily dressed up or down and pairs perfectly with skirts, dress pants, jeans and leggings. Now is the perfect time to shop for embellished and blinged out sweaters. Don’t limit yourself to only wearing them during the holidays! The statement sweater is one of my most favorites to wear throughout the holidays and all winter long!

Rock’in around the Christmas tree in this holiday perfect sweater! The multi-colored sequins sparkle and shine! This look is the trifecta of FUN: sequins, glitter belt and rhinestone heels! Red pants are velvet!

2. The Party Dress

The party dress can be as easy as a little black dress to full on sequins! It just depends on your comfort level and your event! Or choose a bold color such as red or hot pink! Both of these dresses would be holiday perfect! I particularly like the statement on both: one flower ruffled shoulder (red dress) and the rose buds (pink dress). They’re classic yet interesting! The best part is they’re both on sale for $59.99!

3. The Finishing Touch

Accessories totally complete a look and at this time of year there’s no such thing as too much bling! (See our previous post: Accessories Make the Outfit) Adding a touch of bling or going with big bling can totally elevate a look! A little extra is never enough this time of year! You know my theory: “No such thing as too much!” “Go BIG or Go Home!” LOL!

Happy Thanksgiving From Fashion Trends and Friends

Practice Gratitude

The benefits of practicing gratitude are nearly endless. People who regularly practice gratitude by taking time to notice and reflect upon the things they’re thankful for experience more positive emotions, feel more alive, sleep better, express more compassion and kindness, and even have stronger immune systems. And gratitude doesn’t need to be reserved only for momentous occasions like Thanksgiving: sure, you might express gratitude after receiving a promotion at work, but you can also be thankful for something as simple as a fabulously fun outfit!

Research by UC Davis psychologist Robert Emmons, author of Thanks!: How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier, shows that simply keeping a gratitude journal—regularly writing brief reflections on moments for which we’re thankful—can significantly increase well-being and life satisfaction. Do you keep a gratitude journal? I should get better at doing this although I try to dedicate some time at the start and end of my day to reflect on my gratitudes and all that is good in my life! I had my special education students start every day with writing at least three things he/she was grateful for in their journals to set the day up positively!

We often talk about how the algorithms change and can’t be figured out and the amount of time required to do this really well can be draining and exhausting, which sucks up all your free time. However, we do it because we truly enjoy each other, lift each other up, support and share tips and tricks to ensure each other’s successes! We celebrate each other and in the end would miss the connection we have! A BIG THANK YOU FTF followers for your kind and caring words! You bring me gratitude!

Fall Weekend Get Away

and What I Wore

Water Front Suites

For the past three years, Mr. FTF and I have gone to Saugatuck, Michigan over the Columbus Day weekend! We stay at Water Front Suites, which is part of BeachWay Resort and Hotel. BeachWay is situated between downtown Saugatuck and Lake Michigan overlooking the Saugatuck Harbor. From the suites you can see the only hand-cranked chain ferry in the U.S. You can take a ride across the Saugatuck Harbor and spend a day shopping in Saugatuck’s charming downtown shops and unique art galleries. Several close by towns, Douglas and Holland, also offer fun downtown areas with dining and shopping options!

Day 1

The trip from our house to our suite is approximately three hours! We take our time and enjoy the brief travel time. The fall colors get prettier as we head further north! I like to ride in comfort and chose this Loft poncho, Express jeans and Target booties from last year. My wardrobe theme for the three day weekend get away was leopard print…in case you didn’t know, leopard is on major trend!

Poncho: Loft
Jeans: Express
Leopard Booties: Target (last year)

Mr. FTF likes to drive, which is great because I dislike it immensely! We laugh, sing and I usually sleep! Although I did manage to stay awake the whole time!

Rose Gold Sunnies: Express

Our suite is bright, colorful, welcoming and perfect for our weekend stay! This was the first time we stayed in Suite 602. The past two years we’ve stayed in Suite 604. Each is individually owned and decorated differently.

Day 2

Saugatuck

For day two, I wore an Express sherpa with chevron pattern of leopard print. I paired it with black jeans from Express, a cream colored henley and cream colored booties from Old Navy. The necklace is reversible and from Chico’s.

Sherpa: Express

Henley: Old Navy
Booties: Old Navy

We like to start day two at our favorite spot for breakfast, Ida Reds. It’s like stepping back in time! The wait time can be long but is worth it! Breakfast is my favorite meal and Ida Reds delivers!

After breakfast, we like to roam about Saugatuck shopping and enjoying the sights! Mr. FTF is a trooper and carries my bags and is super patient while I shop! One of my favorite places to shop in both Saugatuck and Holland is Glik’s. We don’t have any in my area in Illinois although I recently found out that there is one in Rockford, Illinois. Too far to drive for a shopping trip so I’ll settle for shopping on line or once a year on our annual fall trip!

Love these pumpkin heads made out of propane tanks!
Too cold for ice cream but the cutest little ice cream shop!
Love all the quaint fall decor!
Gotta love a store named: For the Love of Shoes
Mr. FTF gets benched with my bags while I shop and hit the fitting room! He’s such a trooper!
Uncommon Coffee Roasters
Time for a tasty coffee break! We shared a scone and had Salted Carmel Coffees! A tasty treat we don’t usually splurge on!
Thought this bench outside the coffee shop had a great message! Spread Love and Coffee!
The perfect t-shirt for my retired Mr. FTF! We spent quit a bit of time laughing at all of the t-shirts in this store!

Holland

Holland, Michigan is a short drive from Saugatuck. Holland has a great downtown area with lots of shopping and dining options! It appeared that they had just had a pumpkin carving event.

Wizard of Oz carved pumpkins!
Had to stop and say the Pledge of Allegiance!

Mr. FTF and I landed in the new luxury movie theater, Sperry’s in Holland. The seats relined, messaged and heated up! It was heaven after walking around all day in the chilly fall air.

We saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Lots of stars; and we agreed it was entertaining in typical Quentin Tarantino style!

What I Bought at Glik’s

Three sweaters from Glik’s …. I know I know… did I really need more sweaters?! I couldn’t resist the raw hems on the camouflage and the pink leopard sweater plus I liked the unique colors of both! The olive sweater with mustard yellow and black leopard print was another unique color combination I haven’t seen anywhere! I also got a pair of white booties.

Day 3

Comfort is in order for driving home! This Shein top with leopard sleeves and gold sequin pocket rounded out my looks for the weekend. I paired the top with sweat pants/joggers from Old Navy and my leopard shoes from many years ago. I decided the necklace was too much and took it off! Believe it or not, sometimes there is such a thing as too much even for me!

View From Our Suite
Top: Shein
Sweat Pants: Old Navy
Reversible Necklace: Chico’s
Leopard Shoes: Old from my closet

We pack up and head home at a leisurely pace! Before we hit the road, we go to our favorite breakfast spot when heading out of town Blue Star Cafe in Douglas. It’s another quaint little place that feels as though you’ve stepped back in time. I sense that the locals like to go and commiserate over breakfast and coffee!

Mr. FTF likes his yummies!

ZYIA Active – One More Rep

Active Wear

Recently, a dear friend’s sister-in-law, Michele reached out to me seeking my opinion of a new brand of active wear that she sells. Based on following FTF, Michele is well aware of the weight loss and fitness journey I’ve been on; and knows that my goal for this year has been to become physically active and fit! Michele included a link for me to investigate Zyia.

Meet Michele

After doing a little investigative work, I immediately loved how the brand got started. To read how it all began: Click Here

Erin Bradley, the founder/CEO of Zyia, states: “I wanted to find a way to create more opportunities for women to come together—to uplift and support one other“. That’s a mission that I love and can fully support! Additionally, “Zyia Active is a clothing brand that was founded by a few friends who all share a similar passion for living an active lifestyle, being social, love fashion and looking and feeling their best“. YES, to all of this!!

Active Lifestyle Brand

Per Zyia’s website, “ZYIA Active is an active lifestyle brand. It is also a culture that believes in embracing activity with excitement, vigor and delight. We feel that pushing your body and mind is easier and more fun with friends and family. Our mission is to inspire and uplift by making activity a fun and essential part of life.”

“Most of the fabrics that Zyia uses are 4-way stretch fabric to help with stretch ability, compression, form, fit and comfort. Zyia also understands that there is so much more than that to good activewear and is always improving and investing in innovation and technology in it’s fabrics. These technologies will always be a priority for Zyia.”

  • Moisture control
  • Temperature control
  • Strategic ventilation
  • Breathability
  • Anti-odor
  • Sweat wicking
  • Slimming component
  • Muscle support
  • Adaptive
  • Compression

ANTI-ODOR

“Zyia Active has created its Copper Charged Collection (C3) that incorporates a technology that infuses copper yarn to help block odors during the toughest performance activity through its anti-microbial properties. This line uses strategic ventilation zones to promote breathability so you can stay cool while you work out and it was designed with seamless knit technology to eliminate chafing. This collection is ideal to keep you dry, cool, comfortable and smelling good so you can focus on your next high-intensity workout.”

My Curated Look

Michele sent me a link to complete a very brief survey regarding my sizing, etc. Based on my answers, Michele put together items chosen just for me. Within a couple of days, my ensemble arrived. Mind you, I generally don’t like others to pick things out for me especially clothing and even more so workout wear! I feel as though workout wear can be very personal. There are certain criteria for me that are a must have in order to be comfortable. Leggings must hold me in place with no extra jiggle…LOL! High waisted is my preference. They need to stay in place – no folding or rolling down of the waist band! Workout bras are a whole other story! I prefer the girls be held high, tight and in place – no bounce, no show through! Lastly, I generally layer my workout wear; and I don’t do sleeveless.

When I opened my curated look, I immediately liked the colors and style! The leggings have pockets, which I LOVE! The bra and the sleeveless top had me unsure if they’d be for me. I had agreed to Michele’s request that I wear all of it to workout in before I share my thoughts and blogged about it. Of course I can absolutely agree to that as I would never promote something that I actually didn’t like for myself! Off to the gym I went!

Work Outs

When I put the sports bra on, I was pleased that it did exactly what I’d hoped for…held me high and tight! Not much jiggle or bounce! Phew! Additionally, I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable it was throughout my workout! I can honestly say it’s the first workout bra that I like and am comfortable wearing! Yay!!! Until now my hunt for the perfect sports bra has been unsuccessful! I’ve been wearing one that’s too big and almost worn out plus I wear my bra underneath it…all kinds of layers!

Took this selfie in the locker room as I didn’t want to take pics in the gym without a top over the bra! I’m not that confident yet! Plus I was a little self-conscious about others seeing Mr. FTF take my pictures…the challenges of a blogger!

Hope you don’t mind my hot sweaty self as all of these pictures were taken after I completed my workout! This is my legit self at the gym after working all day!

Welcome to my gun show…LOL! Couldn’t resist!

Here is the back of the bra! I wanted to share with you that it zips up, which makes it so much easier to get on and off! I love details on all things so I particularly love that the zip says, “One more rep!” The bra comes with pad inserts similar to swimsuits. I chose not to use mine as I’m already busty enough…LOL!

One of my typical workouts at the gym includes 30 minutes of cardio (Precor) and 30 minutes of weight machines. The longer I wore the sleeveless top the more comfortable I became in being in something sleeveless!

Mixing things up at they gym keeps me motivated and keeps me going! Some days I choose to alternate between walking and running on the track. Why not put the curated look to the running test?! Again it passed with flying colors!

Wanted to show off the pockets on both sides of the leggings! This will be great for holding my phone!

Aerial Yoga

You might recall that my fitness goal this year has been to try activities to find workouts that are fun and that I can look forward to doing weekly! Aerial yoga is just that for me! Check out my previous post here: Aerial Yoga

Time to try out my new Zyia workout wear at aerial yoga! Again it passed with flying colors! Is it wrong that I liked that my workout wear matched my yoga mat?! You know I like matchy matchy – even in my workouts!

In the end, I’m extremely grateful to Michele for bringing Zyia wear to my attention and for gifting me this wonderful workout wear! It’s great to try something new that I would not have chosen for myself. I’ve stated that before but always need to remind myself that it can be a great idea to let others pick for you and to get out of your comfort zone. As a result, I have a new brand that I love, that meets all of my criteria and is cute! That’s the trifecta of wins!

Stylish Monday – Lovely in Leggings

What to Wear With Leggings

It might be easier to state what not to wear leggings with as I think they go with almost everything!

  1. Tunics
  2. Oversized Chambray Shirt
  3. Paired With an Unbuttoned Plaid Shirt
  4. Sweaters both regular and oversized
  5. Cardigans
  6. Dresses
  7. Graphic T-Shirts
  8. Over the Knee Boots
  9. Workout Wear
  10. Sweatshirts both regular and oversized

Last year around this time, I did a whole blog post on how to style faux leather leggings. To see that post, click HERE.

Leggings with a Dress – Work Wear

If a dress is on the shorter side, especially for me as I’m 5’8″, I prefer to wear either tights or leggings underneath. Legging also provide some additional warmth. I’m always cold! My favorite leggings are from Express. Here I’m pictured wearing Express capri leggings. The dress is from Stein Mart.

This tunic/dress is so old that I don’t recall where it’s from and it really was too big but I love the colors and patterns so I belted it and added my favorite Express leggings!

Leggings with a Sweater

This look is perfect for almost anything such as a lunch date with girlfriends, a date night and/or even work depending on what you do! The pop of red with the zebra print is what attracted me! Various animal prints paired with pops of different colors seems to be really trending! This particular sweater is scooped in the front and back making for pretty good coverage! The sweater and jewelry is from Stein Mart and the leggings are Spanx. The boots are Asos (from my closet).

Casual Wear with Leggings

Leggings paired with oversized sweatshirts or tops paired with some tennis shoes is a super cute weekend casual look! Comfort and cuteness all in one look! This oversized Adidas sweatshirt is from JCPenney’s and the leggings are from Target!

The star leggings are from SteinMart. The top is from Kohl’s. This is an easy look to put together quickly and great for running around doing errands, etc. I might have had a mani and pedi on this particular day and then went to the movies with Mr. FTF.

Workout Wear Leggings

Wearing leggings to workout in might be an obvious styling option. I did not start wearing them to workout in until last winter. It took me some time to figure out the brand I like best. My criteria is that they stay up, don’t roll down, hold me in and feel great! After trying several brands, my preferred workout leggings are from Old Navy.

Pictured here in the bathroom at work – LOL! I go straight to the gym from work. If I go home, it becomes easier to not go back out!

Happy Halloween Week

Halloween Fashion and Costume Tips

Do you love to dress up for Halloween? It’s the time of year when you can express yourself through costumes and perhaps try being something different or original or not typical for yourself! Dressing up isn’t just for kids. It’s also for the kids at heart!

October 1962 (I was 15 months old.) . It was a cold Halloween so my mom attached bunny ears to my snowsuit, which had a bunny on the front.
October 1964…I asked my mom what I was suppose to be. She told me that we didn’t have any money for a costume so we pulled things from around the house and I assembled this look…and then there’s this pic
My mom said that I was getting ready for bed; and since I was getting potty trained my parents distracted me with my treat bag!

10 Tips for Choosing the Right Costume

1. Read the fine print. Know exactly what costume pieces and accessories you’re getting before buying. As with any consumer goods, read the return and exchange policy before making a purchase. I’m not always good at this so have learned the hard way. This year I purchased a wig that I decided not to wear. Luckily, I was able to return it and a witch costume that was too tight and itchy!

2. Predict the weather. Before you buy, think about what the weather may be like on the date of your event. Leotards and tights can help stay warm underneath a skirted costume. I dressed in layers for Witches Night Out and was prepared for rain! I did not plan my boots well since we were mostly on grass and my heels kept sinking into the ground!

3. Know the right size. I double and triple check the size descriptions! It also helps to read the reviews from others as to whether or not something fits true to size.

4. Buy early. Don’t wait until the last minute to purchase a Halloween costume, especially if you’re ordering online. Although if you’re a Prime member on Amazon, you’ll get some things quicker. Luckily, I ordered early and didn’t like anything. It afforded me enough time to switch my plans and shop in store.

Purple and Black Striped Tights: Amazon
Boots, Skirt, Belt, Flower, Necklaces, Earrings and Bracelets: My Closet

Deciding to be a glam witch for Witches Night Out was pretty easy! I was able to use this tutu from my costume last year. I went as Madonna! All of the accessories were my own with the exception of the spider necklace and bracelet, which I purchased for this costume.

5. Try it on. Take the costume out of the bag well before you event, just in case it doesn’t fit. Steam or iron the costume before wearing it. Treat a Halloween costume like an outfit for a special event!

6. To save money, use makeup. Short on cash? Change your face with makeup to help the same costume look dramatically different if attending multiple Halloween events. Adding false eyelashes and glitter can elevate a costume!

Magnetic Eyelashes by Ardell
Ultra HD Vinyl Lip Polish by Revlon

These false lashes and lip polish were both great finds! I plan to continue using both! The night of the event I received many compliments on the lip color!

7. Accessorize to add variety. Add gloves or a hat to help make the same costume look different from one night to the next. Plus, adding different accessories is a cheaper alternative than purchasing two costumes. This can be easily done by shopping your closet, attic, basement…

8. Practice in advance. Buy enough makeup to do it twice — and leave enough time to get ready. Do a practice run with your makeup a day or two, or even a weekend before the Halloween event.

If you’re crafty, you can make your costume. This headpiece is a DIY! Impressive! She was one of the costume winners at Witches Night Out!

9. Shop Second Hand. Once you’ve settled on a costume idea and shopped your own closet. You can find lots of great items at second hand shops! One year, I was Janis Joplin and Mr. FTF was Jimi Hendrix. Most of our costume was purchased at Goodwill!

10. HAVE FUN! Enjoy the party or event! Live life to the fullest! Don’t let the good times pass you by!

COSTUME IDEAS

Mr. FTF’s band typically hosts a Halloween Gig and Party! Friends and family are invited to come out and dress up! There’s lots of food, fun and laughter! Here are some of the costumes from this year’s party for a little inspiration!

Iris Apfel Costume
The Most Interesting Man in the World Costume
Rosie the Riveter Costume
Jumpsuit: Goodwill
Boots and Wig: Amazon
Ginger Baker Costume (Paul on the right is the drummer in Mr. FTF’s Band)
Top Gun Maverick and Girlfriend Costumes
Elvis was in the house! There was a wedding in the other room at our venue and a couple got married by Elvis!
Mr. FTF and I were pirates this year since we were all pirates on our Disney Cruise this past summer! We already had the costumes!
