Summer Purse Trends

Summer Purse Trends

When thinking about updating your look for a new season, a purse or clutch is an easy way to do just that!  In fact accessories, always elevate a look taking it up a notch.  We discussed just that in previous blogs titled:  Attention to Details Makes an Outfit Look Complete and Accessories Make the Outfit!  Here’s what’s trending for Summer 2018:

Round Bags

Think rattan and round!  I found the cutest cross body round, rattan bag at Francesca’s!   I got tons of compliments the day I carried it!  If you only get one new summer bag, this is the IT bag to have!

This round metallic bag from New York and Company caught my eye immediately!  I knew I had to have it!  I love all things metallic!  On a side note, I think I’ll title this look my “Mr. Clean Look”!  HA!

Summer Themes

Think flamingos, pineapples, lemons, palm leaves… This flamingo cross body bag is from Charming Charlie.  One of our favorites for accessories! This top is also from Charming Charlie and they have the cutest romper in the same print!

How about these cute purses at Charming Charlie?! Tassels and pom poms continue to be trending!

Black and White is always classic no matter the season or the year.  I haven’t had the opportunity yet to style this one, but here’s a flat lay of how I intend to…

This adorable pineapple tote is a perfect match to this pineapple, bare shoulder, tassel dress!  It’s from @cathysplacecape or Cathy’s Resort Wear.  Can’t wait for it to be warm enough to wear this dress and carry this tote!

Clutches

Clutches are a big trend for summer!  I was looking for a summer bag with lots of bright colors and a tassel!  This one from Francesca’s was a winner!  Here are two ways I style it… (The pictures don’t do it justice!)

HOLD ONTO YOUR HATS…

HAT TRENDS

I have a theory that you’re either a hat person or not with no in-betweens!  Personally, I’m not a hat person at all!  I don’t really own many and think that I don’t look good in them for many reasons!  My head is big (really, really big) and difficult to fit.  Cindy, wrote a blog about her passion for hats.  She owns many, wears them well and uses them as a fashion statement.  Lori isn’t a hat person either although I think she could totally rock the look!  She has commented, “Where am I going to wear it?”  I said anywhere!

So why a blog about hats you ask?  My Fierce 50 sisters decided to do a collaboration on hats and I really wanted to participate plus hats are totally on trend and if they’re for you, there are so many cute styles out there…so here goes.

MY HAT COLLECTION:

This is a hat I wear in the winter when I want to go incognito!  However, I just realized that my hat is rather bold and probably doesn’t go unnoticed.  Note to self, find a less distinctive hat!

Several years ago we were attending the wedding of a friend’s daughter.  At that point in time, my hair was longer and fascinators were trendy.  As you are well aware, I don’t need much of an excuse to be fancy so why not wear a sequined dress and fascinator?!  Those who didn’t know me asked if I was from London.  Apparently, no one in the states was BOLD enough to wear one…but me – LOL!

Lastly, this hat was purchased for a fundraiser I thought I was going to attend that required wearing a hat.  I don’t recall why I didn’t end up going to the fundraiser so this hat sat in a closet for several years until I pulled it out last year to wear to a Kentucky Derby party!

As you can see, nothing about my hat collection is practical or could be worn as an every day accessory!  I go fancy or I don’t go at all.  Therefore, I headed out to Target to do a hat try on and attempt to find a “trendy”, every day hat.

HATS ON TREND

Floppy, fedora, baseball, sun hats, bucket, Panama, Baker Boy…are all currently trendy hat styles!  Here are the ones that caught my eye at Target and warranted a try on session:

Which is/are your favorite/s?  If I had to pick it would be the black and white floppy hat or the floppy beach hats.  The hat that says Beachy and Sunshine are in the $5.00 bin at Target!  That’s a great price for sun protection or if you’re unsure about being able to wear it regularly.  The baseball hat comes in all types of materials – think velvet and glitter!  If I was inclined to wear a baseball hat, you know it’d be covered in glitter!  HA

SHOP THE LOOK

SHOPPING MY MOM’S CLOSET

Talk about a “hat person” and my mom immediately comes to mind!  She wears hats often and for almost any occasion including going to church on Sundays.  If I wanted to wear a hat, especially a fancy hat, I would simply shop her closet!  Pictured is her walk in cedar closet with shelves of hats and purses, nicely labeled in boxes and stacked up…the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree!

My mom and I at a recent fashion show fundraiser.

Here is my try on session from my mom’s closet.  Some of these hats are fit for a royal wedding…oh wait Harry and Meghan must have forgotten to invite me; or my invitation got lost in the mail.

Had to show you the top of this one…

That concludes my try on session…there were a lot more but these were some of my favs!  So are you a hat or non-hat person?  Which style is your favorite?  How do you wear your hats?  Hope you flipped your lid for this post!

What to Wear in Las Vegas

What I Wore in Las Vegas

Spring break seemed like a perfect time to get away to a warmer climate for a little fun!  The last week of March that’s exactly what we did.  I know you’ll find it hard to believe that I was able to pack both my husband and I in one suitcase but I did just that…and my friends doubted me!  The beauty about Vegas is that anything regarding fashion is a go.  Here’s what I wore.

Day One:  Travel, Site Seeing & Gambling – What FUN!

It’s no secret I love color so this loose fitting, bold colored top seemed perfect for traveling on day one.  I like to wear layers to stay warm so I wore a navy tank underneath and my Chico’s denim jacket on top.  I added the pins for an element of fun.  I intentional wore flats since I knew we’d be doing a lot of walking.  How cute are these slides from Target?!  Couldn’t resist the big bow and blush color.

The Look:

The Top:  JCP (I recommend that you size down!):  Project Runway Elbow Sleeve Top

The Jeans:  NY&C:  Soho Jeans – Destroyed Two-Tone-High Waist Boyfriend – Moody Blue Wash

Denim Jacket:  Chico’s – Girlfriend Denim Jacket

Slides:  Target (comes in black or blush) – Women’s Julisa Slide Sandals with a Bow

I digress…how about this cute striped top I discovered while writing this blog?!  I might prefer this one now that I’ve lost more weight; and it’s only $18.50!

Project Runway Short Sleeve Knot Front Top

Hard Rock Hotel and Casino – Las Vegas:

When traveling, we always make a point to stop at the Hard Rock Cafe/Hotel!  It’s kind of our thing.  My husband is a huge music fan and I know I’ve mentioned before he’s in a band.  I also enjoy all of the memorabilia!  Staying here was a no brainer.  The last time we went to Vegas we stayed at the Luxor, which was almost 18 years ago.  Not sure the Hard Rock was there at the time.

Our room…

So grateful that we got to see Prince before he passed away!

Had tickets to see Lady Gaga, but the concert was canceled due to her having a back injury several years ago!

Pool Side:

We spent the day in our own cabana complete with a waitress/waiter!  Gotta have some poolside fun on a vacation!

You probably don’t care to see my swimsuit again as I’ve shared it in previous posts.  (Swimsuit Season A Love Hate Relationship)

J Lo Concert:  Planet Hollywood

No need to mention that for me more bling is better!  Attending a Jo Lo Concert is the perfect reason to pull out all of the bling!  That’s exactly what I did…SEQUINS!

The concert was amazing!  J Lo and her entourage were high energy and put on a phenomenal show for two hours! If you ever get a chance to see her, GO!

The Look:

Sequined Tops:

White Jeans:

Silver Sandals:

The Beatle’s LOVE by Cirque du Soleil:  Mirage

Proud of myself that I was able to re-wear my white pants and silver sandals.  Simply switched out my top and jewelry! Still wore sequins but more subtle bling.  Less to pack and a happy husband with only one suitcase to carry!  HA!

We ate dinner at The Gourmet Dropout.  It was delicious!  I’m not much on food photos but had to share my dinner pic.  We did our best to stay true to our Weight Watcher’s plan.  This salmon was delicious and well within our points!  If you’re in Vegas, we’d highly recommend this restaurant.

The Beatle’s LOVE was such a fabulous show!  Both evenings out were winners in our book.

Last Day:  Traveling Home

Some times clothing items speak to me emotionally and I simply love something and don’t know where or when I’ll be wearing it.  This outfit spoke my name.  Decided Vegas would be the perfect spot to wear it.  Stars seemed to be continuing on trend.  Wearing a belt was a “big deal” for me because I haven’t worn belts in a long time as I was too heavy.  Hey, it’s the little things!  Doing a little celebration dance!

Sorry about how beat up my feet look…they took some wear and tear while we walked the strip!

The Look:

The Jeans:  Stein Mart Hydraulic Star Applique Cuffed Crop Jeans Sizes 4 – 16

The Top:  Stein Mart For the Republic Beaded Stars V Neck Tee Sizes S – XL

The Sandal:  Mix No. 6 Ruffle Flat Sandal

Lady Luck:

In the end, we weren’t winners per say.  However, we’re winners and lucky in LOVE, HEALTH, FAMILY and FRIENDS!  I’ll take those all day any day!

From Illinois to California Coast, Let’s Shop Dresses!

Spring and Summer Dresses From Illinois to the California Coast…

FTF is excited to be collaborating on this blog with Ask Suzanne Bell.  We met Suzanne during the first Fierce 50 Campaign!  We love following her and think you will as well!

Meet Suzanne:

Suzanne… Mom, Wife, Realtor, Blogger, Pinterest Junkie, Style Lover.

When she is not partnering with her husband and business partner Rick to assist clients in buying and selling Real Estate, Suzanne loves to travel – trolling consignment shops, New York flea markets and Antique Stores. And as a retired Fashion Executive of Nordstrom Inc., she loves to talk “shop.”

Suzanne believes that personal style goes way beyond what you wear and can be had by anyone, at any age, on any budget. She believes that a fabulous pair of shoes and lipgloss can instantly change your mood! Suzanne believes that sites such as ThredUP and Poshmark were the best things created to help us reuse and recycle fashion.

Her motto is; style surrounds us and all that we do, everyday. So, why not have some fun with it?

Suzanne and I agreed it would be fun to do a dressing room review of the current dress trends especially as we approach summer, graduations, showers, weddings, vacations, etc.  I know Lori has been on the hunt for a dress to wear to her son’s college graduation. Lor, did you find a dress?

Here are my fitting room reviews for Stein Mart and Dress Barn:

Stein Mart:

If you’re an avid FTF follower, you know I’m a huge fan of Stein Mart for multiple reasons!  First, they have unique, trendy pieces.  I can always find bold, interesting jewelry and accessories.  Their prices can’t be beat!  Stein Mart’s current dress selection is vast!  I was able to grab a hand full of dresses and off to the fitting room I went!

Do you notice a trend?  Apparently, I was drawn to floral and stripes!  Both of which are trending…two of the floral dresses were embroidered.  A continuing trend!

Excuse my laziness in not wanting to take off my pants and my polka dot shoes!  Although the whole look actually works together!  I’m admittedly terrible at pattern mixing but think this is a mix I could actually pull off…stripes, floral and polka dots for the win!  This dress was very comfortable!  It wasn’t for me due to my long body torso and large chest.  I would have liked it better if it sat slightly lower on my waist and not so high.  This is a typical issue for me with this cut of dress!

How cute is this dress?!  I love everything about this dress!! It was so comfortable.  The only drawback in my mind was that it was really short especially if needing to bend over or sit down.  I wished it was a smidge longer!

Statement sleeves, pearls, stripes, bare shoulders, comfort and cute…this is an all around win in my book!  The length was good!  It hit just above my knee!  I also think this dress could be dressed up or down and worn to many various occasions!  Where would you wear this dress?

This embroidered floral, long sleeve dress is far more gorgeous in person than it photographs!  The length was great!  The fact that it has long sleeves is great for Illinois as our spring is almost nonexistent; and I’m almost always cold. It’s also great if you’re trying to camouflage any arm flaws.  Unfortunately, the chest was much tighter than I like, which caused me to be uncomfortable.  Sizing up wasn’t an option as then it was too big all over.

This Tahari dress was a huge hit in my book!  I feel as though it’s figure flattering. The material was soft and comfortable.  I loved the large, bright floral on the rich blue color!  It gapped slightly in the arm pit area, which might require some alterations.

The best part about all of these dresses is that every single one was UNDER $50!  At those prices, you can purchase multiple dresses, afford alterations, purchases shoes and amazing accessories and not break the bank!!!  So which one is your favorite?  Which do you think I purchased?

I was on my way out the door when I discovered these dresses necessitating me to go back into the fitting room!  Do you ever do that?  This is why I don’t like to shop with my husband as he hates when I do that…I can’t help myself!  Shopping alone or with girlfriends is always so much more fun!

The brightly colored, embroidered floral sleeves caught my eye as well as the fringe detailing on the hem of the sleeves and the dress!  The navy dress was made of t-shirt material so soft and the sleeves were so cute!  These two dresses had a more casual vibe perfect for a day out or a date night!

I finally made it out of the store and on to my next stop!

Dress Barn:

I recently purchased my first little black dress at Dress Barn for a fundraiser/fashion show.  As previously mentioned, Dress Barn typically has a vast selection of dresses and the prices are also very reasonable.  They carry petite through plus sizes.

More floral and stripes!  I couldn’t help myself!  It’s what is in the stores and I like BOLD!

Loved that this striped dress had fun sleeves and embroidery!  This was the most expensive dress that I tried on at Dress Barn.  It costs $54.00 but they always have sales and coupons so I’m sure you could score it for less.  I didn’t like where the waistline hit my body.  It’s similar to the dress at Stein Mart regarding my long torso and hitting me to high.

This blue floral dress had many pluses…comfort, length, bell sleeves and interesting detail at the neck!  It’s figure flattering and non-clinging!

This maxi dress was a big win in my book!  Love the slit on one side, the criss cross detail, the banding around the waist and the comfort!  I must admit I was truly enjoying these try on sessions mainly because of my weight loss (Weight Watching Wednesdays)!  It felt good to like almost every dress and feel confident in each!  This could also be dangerous as I could have walked away with everything I tried on – HA!

This chiffon split sleeve floral dress was very comfortable and figure flattering.  The length was just right. You could style this as a tunic over leggings or even jeans!  When making a purchase, always try to think of at least three ways you could style it to get more wear!

This lemon print fit and flare dress was darling!  Lemon print seems to be on trend for this summer.  I would have liked the wrap tie to sit lower on my waist and would have loved some pockets.

There’s my picks from Dress Barn.  Which was your favorite?  Which do you think I purchased?  One additional piece of advice I might offer if going to do a dress try on would be to bring your body shapewear with or wear it.  Some of the dresses might have looked even better or fit better had I had on my Ruby Ribbon Cami!

Suzanne’s Fitting Room Reviews:  Anthropologie, Tory Burch & J Crew

For today’s post, I visited 3 of my  go-to mall stores; my favorite being Tory Burch on this particular visit. On my way out of the mall I took a peek into Ann Taylor and  I have to say, if you are in the market for a dress- perhaps START there. I would also add Nordstrom to the list for dresses. I found Anthropologie to have unique, but not all wearable easy pieces.  J Crew had a few cute dresses, but I think they are having some fit issues with the departure of our friend Jenna Lyons, so I recommend trying on any J Crew pieces in store if possible. Tory Burch had some gorgeous new arrivals in not only dresses but shoes!  What do you say we take a look?

ANTHROPOLOGIE

Striped Utility Midi Dress by Eva Franco

https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/striped-utility-midi-dress?category=SEARCHRESULTS&color=015

If you can get your right size in this easy to wear summer dress, lucky you! Designed in my opinion for an hourglass shape (which I am not), this dress runs about 2 sizes too small.  I had to go up to a size 10 from my regular size 4/6 just to get the waist to fit and the top was then too big. Goes to show, know your body type and don’t take size tags at face value. Bummer for me because I think this is the perfect summer look. Layer a tee under it or a cardigan or denim jacket as a topper and off to the farmers market you go!

Available in regular and petite | $168.00 | runs at least 2 sizes small.

Renata Dress by Mara Hoffman

I loved so much about this bold printed midi dress! Dress her up or down. This ran a bit large in my opinion; some reviews say perhaps to size down, I am wearing an XS vs. my regular size small.  A statement dress that can be worn with or without the belt for different looks.

XS-XL | $450 | I am doing the sale dance on this one!

Daytripper Jumpsuit by Cloth and Stone

https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/cloth-stone-daytripper-jumpsuit?category=SEARCHRESULTS&color=030

Y’all know I love a jumpsuit and if it is a halter, even better. Another piece that can be dressed up or down, I love the brand Cloth and Stone for everyday/effortless chic style.   I would say this ran a bit big; I am wearing a small here. There was not a XS for me to try on, but I would at least like to try it to know for sure. The cardigan I am wearing is the Michael Stars, Knit Cardigan, available in black or neutral. A easy piece to throw on over summer dresses, jumpsuits and sleeveless tops ($158.00 | HERE) https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/michael-stars-knit-cardigan?category=SEARCHRESULTS&color=001

XXS-XL | $138.00 | runs a tad big

TORY BURCH

Grotto Wrap Dress

This free-flowing wrap dress is an ode to legendary designer David Hicks’s interiors and gardens.  For my body type, a banana, a V-neck, wrap style is my BFF. Worn alone or with a denim jacket or cardigan, I would love to add this floral beauty to my closet some day!

J CREW

Resume Dress

The Resume dress is one I have always been curious about.  A J Crew best seller, one was available in black for me to try on in the store. Fit is TTS on this ready-for work flattering sheath. What I love about this sheath is the cap sleeve – I find it to be super flattering and covers all bra strap issues.

Sleeveless Tie-Waist Peplum Top and Side-Button Skirt in Tahlia Stripe

Yes, this is not a dress, but some of us prefer separates, right? I wanted to share this peplum top because I think it is so flattering and a great piece to wear with springtime skirts. It has really mixed reviews stating it is difficult to tie, I didn’t have a problem tying it, and it is reversible! Now on sale in black, white and stripe! The skirt is supposed to be worn to the side, whoops! The styling is cute, but I thought the fabric was cheep for the price. I would not buy the skirt at regular price. Also available in denim.  Reviews state it runs big, but I am wearing my regular J Crew size 4 and would not be able to size down. If you are an hourglass or pear shape though, you may need to size down.

Trendy Spring Tops From Target

Get to Target!

Julie and I were hanging out one afternoon and decided to pop over to the Glenview Target store. It has recently been remodeled and the dressing room is so cute!  When there’s a stylish dressing room, one must stop and pose for a selfie!

Julie and I were going to check out the Universal Thread Tee-Shirts and as we were browsing around we found these adorable trendy tops!  Check them out!

Both of us bought the gingham and polka dot top.

Gingham:

Gingham continues to be a hot trend for spring and summer!  Target has really upped their fashion game.  Here’s how I styled my Target gingham blazer and top!  When asked, friends were surprised to hear both were from Target!

Buttoned or unbuttoned?  That is the question?

Love the statement sleeves and the fact that this top is high low!  Winner Winner!

Recent Target Purchases:

I just ordered these on line and can’t wait to get them.  Just need some warm weather! How cute are they?!

Fashion Show Fundraiser Featuring Chico’s

 Fashion Show Fundraiser Featuring Chico’s

The Woman’s Club of Aurora, Illinois has an annual fundraiser that incorporates a fashion show.  I’ve had the good fortune to be asked to be one of their models several times.  Both times the clothes featured were from Chico’s in Geneva Commons.

The Woman’s Club:

The Woman’s Club is celebrating 127 years of service to the community.  As the oldest philanthropic group in Aurora, their volunteers have helped to fund scholarships, establish kindergartens, provide books for libraries, assist veterans, Native Americans, the disabled, provide assistance to senior citizens, promote healthy families and support programs to aid victims of domestic violence and child abuse.  All great causes in my opinion!

This Year’s Theme – “Little Black Dress”:

It’s probably hard to believe but I didn’t own a little black dress.  Oh darn!  I needed to hit the stores.  You might recall I asked your opinion on IG and FB.

Which dress got your vote?

My LBD:

This dress fit me perfect and was very comfortable!  I liked the detailing on the sleeves and felt like I’d actually be able to wear it in any season.  The sleeveless dress while very cute I knew I’d be cold.  The LBD with white piping was a bit tight in the hips and going up a size wasn’t going to be good since I’m on my weight loss journey.  Is it the dress you thought I’d pick?
