Since we’ve been sheltering in place for several months, I’ve had to cross off several trips in my calendar. Depending on when the shelter in place is lifted, I may or may not have some time to vacation but it sure is fun thinking about where I might want to go first. We do have several out of town weddings come up in September and October that I’m hoping to attend. In preparation for any upcoming traveling plans you might have, I thought I’d share my traveling tips. My friend Cindy did a blog post quit some time ago on 5 Travel Packing Tips from a Frequent Traveler. To read that post click HERE.
Tip #1
Plan in advance! I begin to lay out my outfits in my granddaughter’s bedroom well in advance. This allows me to see how many outfits I’ve planned for based on how many days I’ll be gone and the activities I’ll be doing. Think of it like doing flat lays (for all of you IGers). In addition to the outfit, I include shoes and accessories so I know that I have a complete look! Since I do this in advance, I might not have everything laid out that I want to bring so I create a list so that I don’t forget to add any last minute items!
Tip #2
It’s a great idea to plan and pack around a given color scheme. My most recent trip was to Miami for a work conference. I opted to pack mainly outfits in the blue family and lots of tie dye, which continues to trend. This allows me to use similar shoes, jackets and jewelry/accessories to try and keep over packing to a minimum. Our trip was cut short due to the Corona Virus but here is what I had packed to wear in the event we stayed the whole time…
Had to share that I even had my nails and toes done in blue to match all my looks…you know I love matchy matchy! Blue is one of my favorite colors to wear – all shades of blue!
When possible, wear your heavier items on the plane to avoid the weight in your suitcase and the space they take up. I opted to wear my denim jacket and Adidas tennis shoes. This was the only jacket and tennis shoes I brought with me. Since I’m always cold, I need some kind of coat and although we were going to Miami, I was concerned that the air conditioning would be blasting! The scarf has many bright spring colors and would pair with any of my blue items that I packed.
Look 1
Pink Top (only non-blue item I packed): Loft Scarf: Cold Water Creek Denim Jacket: (my closet) Chico’s Jeans: Old Navy Adidas: Famous Footwear
This white cami takes up very little space. The silver sandals were the only sandals I packed and you will see I wore them with another look. Our conferences tend to be casual but I like my fancy. This entire look was pulled from my closet. I like to be comfortable and feel cute (the best version of me) while sitting in conferences all day.
Look 2
Bomber Jacket: Stein Mart Jeans: Stein Mart Cami: Express Silver Sandals: DSW
My gym clothes were also blue! I planned that my Adidas would match my gym look and not require me to pack an additional pair of tennis shoes.
Look 3
Leggings and Workout Top: Stein Mart
The iridescent stripes on the Adidas tend to pick up the color closest to them and in this case blue!
Meeting amazing women all over the US and in other countries is one of the best parts of blogging and being on social media! I feel as though I could go almost any where and reach out to someone I’ve met and connect in person. This trip was no exception! IG friend Gail (Boxing Princess 22) lives a block away from the hotel we stayed at. One evening we were able to meet in person and hang out. We connected right away!
Look 4
Tie Dye Top: Stein Mart White Jeans: (My Closet) Old Navy
On the traveling days, I like to be layered for warmth but also able to remove layers if too warm. I also like to be comfortable for walking through airports and sitting on the plane.
Our trip was cut short due to the Corona Virus. However, my cousin and her husband were nice enough to drive to Miami from the Ft. Lauderdale area to have breakfast with me and visit for an hour before we left!
Look 5
Tie Dye Sweatshirt: Target Tie Dye Jeans: Old Navy
Looks #6 & #7
If necessary, I was actually prepared to repeat wearing several pairs of the jeans that I packed. These two looks would have also gone well with the other items in my suitcase.
This tye dye sweater could have been worn with either pair of blue jeans. While I did not have these white boots packed, I was planning to wear either my Adidas or my silver sandals depending on how casual or fancy I felt like being…fancy usually trumps casual for me.
Sweater: Stein Mart
Lastly, this long sleeve tie dye tee is super soft and comfy. It also would have been a great traveling look.

Tip #3
Packing cubes have been a great help when it comes to packing! They help to keep things organized in your suitcase and can easily be pulled out and placed in drawers, etc. I tend to pack mine by category: bras and underwear in the smaller cubes, shorts, tops, pants, etc. in the larger cubes! I purchased my cubes last year around this time and have used them on every trip since getting them. Here are my cubes (they come in 22 colors and styles):
Packing Cubes: Amazon

Tip #4
Avoid under packing or over packing! I wish you could hear me laughing as I type this because under packing is NEVER a problem for me. My biggest challenge is not over packing. Because I’m a planner and organizer, I tend to have my outfits planned in advance. Once I see that I have extra space in my luggage, I have to work really hard at not wanting to fill the space and add extra outfits. It can be easy to rationalize that I don’t know what I might be in the mood to wear and, therefore, packing more is better. This is something I continue to work on and probably always will!
Several years ago, we had a girl’s getaway to Cape Cod. This is what happens when 4 friends, 2 who were fashion bloggers, go on vacation. LOL
Tip #5
Bring an extra tote or bag and can hold your purse, reading materials, snacks, etc. and fits under the seat in the plane. Since I was attending a conference, I know that I’ll be carrying those exact things…purse, something to drink, a snack, etc. If you’re on a trip for enjoyment, you’ll want something to throw your beach items and souvenirs in. When Mr. FTF and I travel, he usually brings his backpack, which is perfect for the two of us!
You can see my tote on top of my carry on suitcase! I always get compliments on it..it has many covers of Cosmopolitan magazine. Inside it has several compartments, which helps to keep it organized and it holds quit a bit plus fits under the airplane seat perfectly!

As the saying goes: April showers bring May flowers! However, if you live in Illinois, May can bring a wide range of weather! When this meme came across one of my social media platforms, it caused me to laugh as it’s completely true! I’m sure you can relate depending on where you live!
In the past, I’ve never thought of rain gear as being stylish or fun but set my sights on finding some cute rain gear that I could actually get excited about wearing and maybe even have some fun! In my world, fashion is fun! However, my rain gear wasn’t very fun. I have some random umbrellas I keep in my car as my work causes me to travel most of days between all of our schools. Rain boots were never on my radar nor a rain hat. As you’re well aware, I’m not really a hat person. I don’t think I’ve owned rain boots since I was a young girl. Several rain type jackets hang in my closet all of which are black and go with anything. My mission became: find fun rain gear! Mission accomplished: found cute raincoat, umbrella, hat and boots!
Rain Coat
My goal was to find a rain coat that was more interesting and more fun than the current plain black ones hanging in my closet. I wanted the coat to match many things and set the tone for the rest of my rain gear essentials. Black and white check seemed like a neutral print that would match many things and yet had some interest. The coat came in a carrying pouch, which would be great to keep in your car, throw in a briefcase or pack in a suitcase! I typically check the ten day forecast when traveling and pack accordingly. This particular raincoat is super light weight and would even pack easily in a purse!
Raincoat Pouch
The raincoat is double breasted, with a tie waist although you could leave the tie off. I prefer a tie waist so I don’t look so boxy. The coat has pockets and a detachable hood. Both features that are important to me! The coat runs true to size. It comes in seven colors and patterns.
Rain Hat
Who remembers the old fashioned rain bonnets? I believe I wore these as a child and young girl. My mom had them in her purse. Do you remember that they came in a small plastic holder, which when folded neatly they fit inside. If you still have yours, it might be an antique! Do they still make these? Does anyone still wear them?
I am now able to answer my own questions! After writing this post, I not only found out you can still purchase these style rain hats but that my mom has one in the center compartment of her car! I thought I’d model it for you! It’s quit the fashion statement but hey in a pinch, it works! The polka dots actually match the umbrella I choose! This is clearly the more updated and modern version of the rain cap from back in the day!
Since I choose a black and white checked raincoat, I opted to go for red accents. Any other color will pop and add some interest. The rain hat I choose has several great features. The chin strap is detachable in case you prefer not to have a strap. The strap is also adjustable to fit your head. This feature is great for me as I have a really big head! It’s also typically really windy here and I could see the wind whipping this hat right off! The hat is collapsable and can easily be tucked into a purse, briefcase, computer bag, or suitcase! The hat is one size fits all.
Removable Chin Strap
Adjustable Chin Strap
Rain Boots
When ordering rain boots, I wasn’t really sure if I’d actually wear them. How practical would they be as I travel around my school district? Would I actually wear them when going out and about in the rain! I surprised myself with a definite YES to those questions. Although I haven’t been back to work yet, I was ecstatic to throw them on when it was raining and walk to my mailbox. I found myself having so much fun splashing in the puddles and the simple fact that I didn’t have to worry about them getting ruined if wet! They’re super simple to pull on and go. If at work, depending on my outfit for the day, I might actually wear them as opposed to bringing along a pair of shoes. I’m sure you’ve figured out that I couldn’t resist this pair with the cute bows! They are comfortable but a little squeaky when wet. The boots also come black with white bows.
Reversible Umbrella
As mentioned, I have several umbrellas I keep in my car in case I need them. None of them are very cute but do the trick provided I have them with me when it’s start raining! Several of them have seen better days and totally lack an element of cute! In keeping with my black, white and red theme, I opted for this Bagail Reversible Umbrella. The outside is black and underneath is red, black and white polka dots! Polka dots always evoke happiness for me. While I’m pattern mixing with the check and the polka dots, it all works together since it’s all the same colors.
I created a brief video to share all the unique features of this particular umbrella! Additionally it has a UPF of 50 and claims to be windproof, which would be amazing if true. I have yet to try it in high winds. However, I can tell that it is very well constructed!
(Note to self…no gum chewing while making videos…LOL!)
The reversible umbrella would also be much easier for getting in and out of the car as sometimes I feel as though I get stuck in the door while trying to close it and inevitably get wet! The umbrella comes in 43 different color and pattern combinations.

Two weeks ago Mad for Midis Part 1 was posted, which you can see here: Mad for Midis Part 1 of 2. I shared where I got my styling inspiration, two unusual but very fun midi skirts and how to style them multiple ways for various occasions. You’ll recall I’m not really a skirt or dress person. They’re usually not my go tos but after creating these posts my thoughts about wearing midis has changed! You might say, “I’m MAD FOR MIDIS!” It’s good to get out of your own way! I should know this by now! LOL
Pleated Rainbow Midi Skirt
When I received the above advertisement from Stein Mart, I was immediately attracted to this pleated skirt with all it’s rainbow of colors! This was prior to the pandemic and I was able to stop by the store to try it on. Super glad I did because it’s even better in person! The colors are vibrant, the pull on band is a shimmery silver and it’s a dream to twirl in! Anyone besides me like to twirl? I also grabbed this graphic tee to see how I felt in trying to replicate this exact look…full disclosure this is not a look I would have put together on my own and I questioned if it might look silly on this 58 year old!
Look 1
Look 1 is my version of the advertisement. I paired this gorgeous skirt with the graphic “Keep It Kind” t-shirt and added my Adidas! I’d wear this look almost anywhere – to work (whenever we get to go back, I sure miss the students and staff!), out with friends, a date night, etc. It’s super comfy as the skirt pulls on and the tee is soft…simple styling to throw on and go! Winning! It’s a pulled together look that doesn’t take much time to assemble! I call that winning! My age didn’t get in my way!
Keep It Kind T-Shirt: Stein Mart Pleated Skirt: Stein Mart Adidas: Famous Footwear
Since I’m almost always cold, I opted to add on my bomber jacket from my closet! It’s also a Stein Mart purchase from last spring! It’s hard to see in the picture but the trim on the collar, waist and wrists have a silver shimmery stripe similar to the waist in the skirt! You know matching is always a win in my book! The jacket kind of elevates this look. What do you think?
On Instagram, many bloggers are playing along with #createwhilewewait. Two bloggers share an inspirational picture daily and then encourage others to play along. On this particular day, I participated. Here’s the inspiration picture and my recreate version…I almost always add a positive message or an element of fun! On a side note, it was such a great treat to have Mr. FTF take me to the Dunkin Donuts drive through! I’m proud to report that I DID NOT eat the donuts! They promptly went in the garbage after taking the pictures! I did drink the coffee!
Look 2
Instead of the bomber jacket, this look can easily be styled with a denim jacket of any color! (Colored denim is super trendy right now!) That’s the beauty of this skirt. It pairs with any color and looks great! The denim jacket keeps this look casual. If I was going out, I’d throw on my silver cross body bag! Voila…ready to roll!
Denim Jacket: Cold Water Creek
Look 3
Another graphic t-shirt but with color! I wanted to see how well this skirt would pair with other graphic tees in my wardrobe. This Love graphic tee is also from Stein Mart (you know I’m a Stein Mart lover right?!). I’m a big fan of color so this combination brought me joy! Colorful joy! Instead of fully tucking in the tee I opted for a half tuck. This is a casual look that can be worn almost anywhere and looks put together and stylish! I love the simplicity of the effort in putting this look together! By the way, the wind on this particular day made wearing this skirt extra fun! The skirt has so much movement and beauty!
Love Graphic T-Shirt: Jessica Simpson Stein Mart
Look 4
To take this pleated skirt up a notch and elevate the look, I pulled out my silver shimmer top. The top reminds me of a t-shirt because it’s so soft and super comfortable. Silver pumps were swapped out for my Adidas and I threw on a necklace. Again the effort to style this skirt, so easy, so simple and super comfortable. This look would be great for any event or special occasion. You know I tend to be extra and love fancy so this is right up my alley! This look would be perfect for a night out on the town! I’m so ready for that to happen again!
Silver Shimmer Top: White House Black Market (last summer) Silver Pumps: My Closet (Target)
If I were heading out, I’d need a jacket for some added warmth. I’d throw on my pink leather jacket cause pink is always a good choice! Who doesn’t love being Pinkalicious?!
Pink Leather Jacket: My Closet (Wilson’s Leather)
Look 5
The silver shimmer top was traded for the pink top and I added back my bomber jacket but kept the same silver pumps and accessories. I want the skirt to play center stage so I kept my accessories minimal. Any solid colored top would pair great with this skirt since it has all the colors. I’m calling this my middle of the road look – not too casual and not too fancy. I’d wear this look to work (although it might be fancy for some to wear to work but my work is used to me…LOL), or special occasions like a bridal shower, graduation, etc.
Pink Top: White House Black Market (my closet from last spring)
There you have it! My three new midis style multipled ways for various occasions! Love being able to mix and match and the ease of styling these skirts as well as the comfort!
Inspiration
Full disclosure, I really wanted one more midi skirt besides the ones I’ve shared in these two blog posts. I was inspired by Barbi of Southern Blonde Chic in this super cute camo skirt. First, I ordered it in my true size. When I tried it on, it did not look anywhere as good as it does on Barbi. I returned it and sized up. Still no luck! I know it’s bad when even Mr. FTF says NO GO because he usually thinks I look good in everything! Sadly, I returned the skirt!
I share this with you because it’s so important to give looks a try. Not everything always looks great on all of us. You need to find what looks good on you! You know I feel strongly that we should step out of our box now and then and try new things. Don’t be limited by your age or your size! If you like something and feel good in it, you’ll look amazing and confident!
Love all the ways Barbi styled this camo skirt. If you aren’t already following her, you should check her out. She is the cutest, kindest, most inspiring, uplifting blogger and always motivational! When I hadn’t posted on IG for several days due to my husband having pneumonia and waiting to hear if he had Covid19, it was Barbi that noticed and reached out to me by sending a DM to inquire if I was ok! That small gesture really touched my heart and came when I needed it so much! I had the pleasure of meeting Barbi in person several years ago in California at the very first Forever Fierce 50 get together! The month of May and floral prints go hand in hand! When we finally get a glimpse of slightly warmer weather here in Illinois, it makes me want to reach for lighter, brighter colors and FLORALS! There is really no right or wrong way to wear floral prints. It’s more a matter of your comfort regarding this print. You can go bold and wear floral from head to toe or simply add accents of floral in your outfit.
Tips for Wearing Florals
As a mid-lifer, I’m a true believer that if you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing you’ll look terrific and exude confidence. So if you want to wear floral from head to toe, GO FOR IT!
It’s good to give new things a try as I’m proof that you just might discover something you like that you thought you’d never try or wear! If you typically don’t wear floral, give it a try in smaller doses – think accessories or accent pieces!
Floral pieces can be worn to work, events and special occasions, lounging around, etc. as evidenced by all the ways I’ve styled my florals for you here! In addition, you’ll get to see how my fashionable friends wore theirs!
Lastly, you might want to balance the floral print size to your body size. Large prints might overwhelm a petite figure, which isn’t my issue. Being tall and average sized, I can wear bigger floral patterns.
Floral Sweater
The weather in May can still be iffy at best! We could have summer like weather to snow and everything in between. Therefore, I like the idea of having a spring sweater or two in my collection. You could easily wear this sweater like a cardigan and layer a cami or tank underneath. I’ve added my vintage Trifari floral necklace and earrings. (To see a previous blog post on Trifari click here: A Tribute to Wendy Mancini and Trifari Jewelry) On a side note, I’ve had people offer to buy this Trifari set right off my body!
Sweater and Jewelry: Shopped My Closet
Pictured is how I would wear this look to work. It can easily be dressed down and worn with shorts, jeans – especially colored jeans, which are trending! (To see a previous post on colored denim, click here: Stylish Monday Colored Denim)
As Fashion Trends and Friends followers, you know that skirts and dresses aren’t really my jam that is until recently! This floral dress was purchased last year at Stein Mart for my great-niece’s first Communion. Spring is the perfect time to find floral dresses. Floral dresses are great to wear to any spring and summer event like bridal showers, graduations, Derby Day parties…the list could go on and on. This dress fit perfectly and yet was super comfortable. Having pockets was a definite plus! Who doesn’t love pockets?
This floral pattern is a little more abstract, which I liked. The colors are bold and vibrant, which is win in my book! I paired it with pearls always a classic choice and pale pink shimmery pumps. You know I’m always about more being better but you could easily skip a necklace and wear a bright colored shoe or sandal. For a more casual look, I’d wear a flat, strappy sandal.

Floral Jogger Set
Since we’re all in some state of sheltering at home, wearing comfy clothing has been the common go to for most of us. I’m a big fan of jogger sets, which can easily be worn separate or together. This jogger set was purchased last year; and I wore it traveling to Malibu for my girl’s get away. Most of us also like to travel in comfort! This jogger set seemed like the perfect outfit for my four hour flight; and I simply threw on my jean jacket for warmth since I’m usually cold on planes.
Floral Jogger Set: New York and Company (last year) Slides: Target (several years ago)
All over floral was a hit for me but these two pieces can easily be separated and worn with solid colors. Joggers can actually be dressed up so think about adding heals and a blouse or cami. The floral top can be paired with shorts, jeans, skirts…you get the idea! Lots of styling options for these two pieces!

Floral Tops
Floral tops are an easy go to when wanting to add some floral for a spring/summer look! Here I’ve styled both my floral tops for work by wearing them with dress pants. For a more casual look, they can both be worn with colored denim, jeans, shorts and skirts. This green color is not a color I typically wear but liked the sleeves and the peplum plus the floral print is so pretty and the whole look just felt like spring to me! I purchased this look to wear to work and never got the chance this school year so I decided to wear it for a Zoom class I’m teaching. I always feel most myself when I’m cleaned up and dressed up!
Pairing red and yellow is a great combination and somewhat newer for me! The scalloped edges on this top gives it some extra detail.

Floral Accents
These pumps have been in my closet for almost a year. They were purchased when a local shoe store was going out of business. Doing this post caused me to pull them out and style them. I decided to pair them with my lace top and pearl embellished, distressed jeans for a recent Zoom call! I would wear this look for work on a Friday, a shopping date with girlfriends, date night with my hubby, etc. I think the pumps would look great with any solid colored dress or column look in white, pink, blue, green, yellow…

Skirt lengths come and go…short and long and in-between! While the midi skirt may have started out as one such trend, it’s stuck around long enough to see it become a bona fide wardrobe staple.
As its title suggests, a midi skirt is a skirt with a length that’s in between that of a mini skirt and a maxi skirt. The hem of most midi skirts falls midway down your calf, somewhere between your knee and your ankle. Midi skirts automatically flatter every body size, shape, and type.
Skirts are not my usual go to for any event at any time. However, I’ve been seeing so many cute ways to style them both casual and fancy. As I began to put together this post, I came to realization that I enjoy wearing them far more than I anticipated as they’re super comfy and so easily pair with almost anything. I took some inspiration from women I follow on Instagram and put my style/spin on the looks. Having the gift of time has allowed me to really get creative and step out of my comfort zone!
Tulle Midi Skirt
Tulle Skirt: Amazon Graphic T-Shirt: Shein Pink Faux Leather Jacket: My Closet (Wilson Leather) Fishnet Socks and Paten Pumps: My Closet
True confession…I’ve been wanting a tulle skirt for some time but was really second guessing where I’d wear it, was it appropriate and on and on…until I saw my inspiration! Tammy of Fashion Knows No Age popped up in my Instagram feed wearing her beautiful tulle skirt! It was a reminder that life is short buy and wear the tulle skirt! Being as we’re still sheltering in place and can’t really go anywhere yet, I decided to recreate some fun memes that have been all over social media. When I can go out, I will wear my tulle skirt for a date night or party. A tulle skirt can be paired with a graphic tee, sequined top, solid colored top..the options are endless. This tulle skirt is pull on and super comfortable. It has a lining underneath that is shorter. I’ve added a pearl embellished belt to go along with all my pearl accessories! Voila…I’ll call this my Carrie Bradshaw look!
Memes for Fun
It never fails…I go out to stage these pictures on a non-garbage day all dressed up and all my neighbors are out! Most of my neighbors are used to me; but I have new neighbors! Had to do some explaining! Oh well, keeping them all entertained! LOL
You can see that we socially distanced ourselves from the other shoppers at the back of the grocery store parking lot! Doesn’t everyone grocery shop in a tulle skirt?!
Several dog walkers caught us taking this picture. When we explained what we were up to (at an appropriate social distance), we had some laughs!
I’ve also been participating in #createwhilewewait posts on Instagram and posting them in Stories! Each day an inspiration picture is shared and then whoever wants to put their spin on it and recreate it does just that. My graphic tee prompted me to create this post…Being creative brings me great joy and it has been a gift having the extra time to spend!

My Friend Laura and I: Friends since we were 3 Years Old
Fitting Room Try On
On a recent trip to Portland, Oregon for a work conference, I had the pleasure of visiting with my long time friend Laura. We’ve been friends since we were about three years old. I was ecstatic that we’d be able to spend an evening together, which involved dinner, a little shopping and Portland’s Festival of Lights. Laura and I entered a very quirky and eclectic store that sold both second hand vintage retro clothes and new items. We had a field day! I spotted this skirt and immediately thought of Terri of I am Terri B wearing her graphic skirt. I probably would have passed up this skirt if I hadn’t seen Terri wearing a similar one. This cropped, pattern mixed, denim jacket was also a find on that shopping trip! This is a crazy amount of pattern mixing for me but I really love how it all came together! Mr. FTF’s response when he saw this look, “I need some anxiety meds! That’s a lot going on!” LOL
Graphic Midi Skirt: Store in Portland, Oregon Cropped Denim Jacket: Store in Portland, Oregon P448s: Evereve
Here are several ways to style this graphic midi skirt from casual to dressed up, which do you prefer? In my opinion, it is casual when paired with my P448s and this cropped denim jacket.
When you change the shoes from tennies to pumps, it elevates the look causing it feel more dressy. I added my fishnet socks with bow accents. Having extra time to style things many ways is such a delight for me as I’m usually pressed for time!
Fishnet Socks with Bows and Black Patent Pumps
To dress up the look, I went from the black tank top and cropped denim jacket, to this long sheered sleeved top with the large bow on the shoulder and kept on the pumps minus the socks for a more serious look. Originally, this top was purchased and worn at Christmas. While I preferred to tuck in the top, you could also leave it out. The skirt is a super comfortable pull on!

You could also pair this skirt with other colors and pull out the pink, red, green or white, I grabbed a puffy sleeved super soft top, added a silk pink ribbon at the waist and my pink suede booties for look #4! Not quit as fancy but not casual…a middle of the road look that I would even wear to work!
Black Puffy Shoulder/Sleeved Top: Express Pink Ribbon Belt: My Closet Pink Booties: My Closet (Sam Edelman)
Lastly, I added my jean jacket and put my P448s back on to create a more casual look! That is a total of 5 styling options for 1 skirt! Boom! Super simple to switch out a couple of things to completely change the look and feel for where ever you might be going or what ever you might be doing! We will get to go back out and how glorious that will be!!!
Fashion Trends and Friends is as much about friends as we are about fashion! Today’s post features more than just a friend! I’m sharing my beautiful step-daughter, Tiffany’s, blog with you!
I’ve been blessed and have had the pleasure of having Tiffany in my life since she was 9 years old! I can’t imagine my life without her! I couldn’t have chosen a better daughter! We have a unique and special bond – not your typical “step” relationship!
“I’ve always lead a health and fitness lifestyle. But, about two years ago I started really tweaking my diet. I learned about a handful of foods to which my body was reacting negatively. Once I eliminated those foods, I began to feel really amazing. I would meet people at parties, and they would always have so many questions for me. Also, anytime I would post something food or health related on my personal Facebook account, people would direct message me with questions. You inspired me to start my blog when you started your fashion blog. It looks like you have so much fun and can express your creativity.”
What is the focus of You Are What You Eat?
Shelter at Home Post Workout – One of Tiffany’s favorite workout websites is: Fitness Blender To read Tiffany’s blog on Workouts on a Budget: CLICK HERE
You Are What You Eat (my blog) mainly focuses on healthy eating, recipes, and fitness. Tiffany’s goal is to share her health journey because people are always interested in how she eats and exercises.
Who is You Are What You Eat’s target audience?
Tiffany and I at my Pound Fit class! To read more about Pound Fit: CLICK HERE
You Are What You Eat’s targeted audience is everyone! Tiffany is trying to spread the word of health. But, she feels like women in their 40s gravitate towards her blog because they can relate to her, a woman in her 40s :).
I would like to add that as a midlifer in her very very very late 50’s I thoroughly enjoy her posts! For years, Tiffany has been an inspiration and resource as I’ve traversed my own weight loss and fitness journey! She’s been trying to keep myself and her dad healthy for as long as I can remember! Tiffany has also shared her husband’s journey and her daughter’s healthy habits (you know my favorite girlie!)!
Goat Yoga is more about the experience with the goats than exercise but the three of us sure had fun! To read my post about our experience: CLICK HERE
What do you hope other’s gain from reading You Are What You Eat?
Tiffany hopes others gain health knowledge and hopes to inspire people to live a healthy lifestyle. She likes to share the little things she picks up along the way.
How do you stay motivated?
Tiffany is an avid runner!
The simple the fact that she created the blog keeps her most motivated. She knows there are readers who count on her posts to motivate them. So, it’s a beautiful symbiotic relationship for her. Just a few months ago, a friend who she hardly ever sees came up to her and told her how she reads You Are What You Eat posts every week and even quoted her. Those kind of things keep Tiffany motived as well.
What’s been the best part about blogging so far?
The best part about blogging so far is two-part because she couldn’t pick just one best. The positive reactions she’s received are incredible. But, she also loves thinking about what she’s going to write about and being creative.
How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle with both nutrition and fitness? Who or what keeps you motivated? Leave us a comment! We always love to hear from you!

Periodically, I’m inspired to pull things from my closet and think about how to style them in different ways and think about dressing an item up as well as dressing it down. In the past, I’ve shared how to style one pair of pants four different ways and get the most mileage out of an item. To read that post click here: One Pair of Pants Styled Four Ways. I decided to pull out an old but loved sweater from my closet. Introducing the SWEATER and how I dressed it up, down and changed my personal look!
Dress Up
This sweater has been in my closet for so long that I don’t even remember how long ago I purchased it. I do recall that it’s from Stein Mart when Stein Mart still had actual stores. It should have probably been donated by now along with other things that no longer fit me but I’ve hung on to it. It’s an extra large and now I’m usually a medium and can sometimes wear a small. The bright colors – red, pink and black and white along with the pattern mix – floral and zebra – is so fun that I just couldn’t part with it and after playing around and styling it, I’m so glad I kept it.
Since the sweater is too large on me, I opted to keep it unbuttoned and layer it over a cami. After taking the pictures, it crossed my mind that I could also have belted it.
White, black, pink or red would all be good matches underneath the sweater. While I paired it with my black jeans, which is casual to me, this look could also be worn with black dress pants or black leggings, white dress pants, red or even pink dress pants. I could switch out the black jeans for white jeans or red jeans. You get the idea. The options are pretty endless. As you can see, I wore the sweater over a white cami and wore my white booties. Red, black or pink booties would also work as well as a cami in black, red or pink. Would you wear any other colors with this look?
Don’t forget accessories! Accessories always elevate an outfit and really pull a look together! When I envision an outfit, I visually see it from head to toe and everything in between! To see a previous blog post on accessories click here: Accessories Make the Outfit.
Since I was wearing white booties and a white cami, I opted for my white purse and black and white sunnies. Black, pink and red accessories would also be a match…you know I like matchy matchy!
This look could be worn almost any where! If I had black dress pants on, I’d wear this look to work. With jeans, it’s a great look for a date night, lunch date or shopping with girlfriends.
To dress this sweater down, I simply switched out the cami with a tank and the booties with some tennies! Voila, simple and easy! Wearing flats of any kind or even wearing tennies, unless I’m working out, is out of my comfort zone. I’m usually in heals. These sneakers caught my attention because of the fun patterns, colors and metallic silver!
Black Tank Top: My Closet P448: Evereve
Similar to the cami, a tank top in white, pink or red would work. A plain t-shirt would also work if you’d prefer a looser fit as the tank is slightly more clingy. Wearing the black tank and the black jeans portraits a longer, leaner look similar to column dressing (all one color top to bottom).
The P448s have a mix of animal print – zebra on the toes in white and silver, leopard print on the sides and how about those metallic bright pink shoe strings! So happy I splurged on these! These P448s so comfy and super cute! In the past, I would have never put these sneakers with this sweater! Stepping out of my comfort zone and loving it! Leopard and zebra and floral – oh my!
I opted to keep all of my accessories the same as in my dressed up look! A leopard purse and leopard print sunnies might add an additional element of fun to this look and play off of the P448s.
The dressed down version of this look would be great for almost anything. I could wear this to work on Fridays. It would be great for running errands, lunch or shopping dates or even a casual dinner date.

Each month on Stylish Monday, my fashionable friends from around the world and I try to bring you a theme or current fashion trend. With all that’s currently happening regarding the pandemic, we decided we would rather share our ideas and tips for managing this not so normal time while we all shelter in place!
10 Things to Do While You Shelter at Home Part 1 of 2
Last week, I shared 10 Things to Do While Sheltering at Home Part 1 of 2 and the scare my husband and I had: CLICK HERE.
This visual popped up in a friend’s Facebook feed! It really resonated with me and it might help you! I think it’s normal to have gone through all three zones and perhaps even bounce back and fourth. While dealing with my husband’s pneumonia and waiting for days and days of the unknown – does he have Covid 19 or not??? – together he and I bounced around all of the zones. Personally, I’d like to make an effort to spend the remaining time in the “Growth Zone”. My fashionable friends and I hope you gather some good ideas and suggestions to help you stay in the “Growth Zone” because we’re all in this together!

Here in California, we’ve been under a Shelter-In-Home mandate for 3 weeks now – with another entire month (at least) to go. One of the many things I’ve learned over the past few weeks is the longer you live together under one roof, “me time” becomes crucial. This week, I decided to give myself a “Spa Like” Manicure and Pedicure. I can’t remember the last time I did my own nails, but my nails were in bad shape and I was in desperate need of some quiet time. I’m happy to say, the hour spent at my “home spa” was just what I needed to recharge, and lift my mood. At the last Frontier, people are used to coping with shortages of any kind and being isolated and self-entertaining. Toilet paper is often kept in an old cucumber slices jar and yes PJs are common under the heavy down coats. Thus, what changed is the way to work and to self-entertain, sort off. And it all depends on guess what? Temperature and air quality. Read more in Nicole’s post, Staying Sane Around the Globe: Interior Alaska | (CLICK HERE)

As I worked on this blog this past Sunday, my husband entered the office and told me he thought he needed to go to the ER. I literally stopped typing mid-sentence and off we went. Mr. FTF was in excruciating pain, had been coughing for quit some time, was having difficulty breathing and despite having been on Doxycycline for nine days he was only getting worse not better. Two weeks earlier he had a kidney stone and they spotted something on his lungs. To say I was scared is an understatement. My heart was in my throat! What if they wouldn’t allow me into the ER with him? What if we’d be exposed to COVID19. What if he has COVID19? Would I be saying good-bye to him at the door of the ER and for what amount of time? What if….a dangerous game to play and I try never to go there in my thinking but I was scared! So relieved that they allowed me in with him. He was struggling to breath and, therefore, speak. I wanted to be able to assist and answer their questions and keep him from coughing!
Mr. FTF was diagnosed with Pneumonia. They tested him for COVID19 but we won’t have the results for another three – four days (hopefully today). We elected to come home from the hospital as his vital signs were stable the whole time we were there and we felt as though our home environment would be a safer place to be right now. I must add that the ER staff at Copley Hospital were nothing short of amazing! They treated us with care, compassion and respect! It’s a difficult job in the best of situations and right now they are pushed and pushing to their maximum limits! If you’re a prayerful person, we’d appreciate some prayers at this time and continued prayers for all front line workers! I’m reminded of my mantra from when we were dealing with Mr. FTF’s pancreatic cancer: It’s the little things that are really the big things worthy of celebration! This sign sits in our family room and is a constant reminder. This scare has been a refocusing on this exact believe…
Embrace each other and those that you’re currently sheltering with at home! Stay safe and healthy! The sooner we all cooperate the sooner we’ll be able to resume our lives outside of our homes. Use this gift of time to truly enjoy the little things!
Here’s the post that I had written before we left for the ER…
Most of us are currently in week three of social distancing and sheltering in place in order to flatten the curve of COVID 19. In all honesty, figuring out a “new normal” in my house has been quit the challenge for me. How about you? Have you established a routine and structure to your days? After the first few days of feeling like I was becoming a couch slug and binge watching Netflix, I decided that I needed to establish a better routine and structure that would give me a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
Hope you find something on my list of things to do while you’re sheltering at home that appeal to you…
1. Zoom Calls to Stay Socially Connected
Zoom calls with work have become part of my new norm. They’ve also been a joy to see familiar faces that I miss as well as productive as we plan and discuss how to support our staff and our students during this challenging time. I’ve been working on creating on-line courses and trainings for our para professionals, which will begin next week. We are technically on spring break right now.
Zoom calls are also a great way to stay connected socially with family and friends. I was extremely grateful these past two weeks to connect via Zoom with my Weight Watchers Wednesday group and leader. Being home all day has been such a challenge to stay away from the frig out of boredom and just because it’s there. Talking with my support group not only reinforced that I’m not the only one feeling that way but allowed me to commit to the group what I’m going to do better this week.
2. Spring Break Staycation
Secrets Huatulco, Mexico
My husband and I had reservations for Secrets Resort in Huatulco, Mexico, at an all inclusive adults only resort. Lying on the beach soaking in some sun was something I was really, really looking forward to doing. Sadly, like everyone with spring break plans, we had to cancel them. My step-daughter and granddaughter had a mother-daughter trip planned to New York. In lieu of not going to either destination, I planned a beach staycation. Thank goodness for Amazon as I was able to order things for a beach bag full of fun for my granddaughter. I spoiled her with all of her favorite candies (she usually doesn’t eat candy so it was special), light up flip flops, her favorite color (right now it’s light purple) nail polish, beach towel, and Minnie Mouse T-shirt. We drank out of flamingo glasses with umbrella straws – her favorite special drink Cherry Pepsi (something she usually doesn’t get). This made it feel more special than just a typical visit to our house although we do try and make every time special for her!
Spending time together, laughing, talking, playing games, watching movies and enjoying each other while creating positive memories during a difficult time is important especially for children. I felt as though our themed staycation achieved all of these!

3. Exercise
Since going for walks is the only real opportunity to get out besides grocery shopping, it has become a regular physical activity for us. There are a few challenges with walking when it’s March and early April in Illinois, which include cold, wind and rain! Therefore, we try and get out as soon as the weather seems to be cooperating no matter what time of day. While on our staycation, we decided to “Chalk Our Walk”! This is a great idea to add an element of fun and creativity and it really is a thing! The originator of “Chalk Our Walk” reached out to me when I posted pictures in Instastories. Additionally, it was fun thinking about others who might walk after us and see our art work and uplifting, positive messages. By the way, I would have done this even if I didn’t have my granddaughter with me.
SHOP CHALK
While I enjoy walking, I feel as though I need to be incorporating more physically activity into my days. Physical activity/fitness has been my personal goal for the past year and half. I feel as though I’ve made good progress and don’t want to loose what I’ve gained. Plus walking is always so dependent on the weather. The internet is a great source to find additional physical activities and support. The first thing I did was sign up for a free virtual personal training session with Brooke of Brooke Fitness Goals. I follow her on Instagram. We facetimed and she asked me my goals and gave me exercises to do at home with and without weights. This was a great opportunity and gave me personalized ideas. She’s as cute as can be and she especially enjoys working with midlife women.
Brooke of brooke_fitnessgoals If you aren’t already following Brooke, you should add her to your list of follows!
Recently, I was briefly in Miami for a conference for work before it was canceled due to the Coronavirus. I had the pleasure of meeting Gail of Boxing Princess 22. I also follow Gail on Instagram. She and I immediately connected. Gail has been a fan of fitness her entire life and is very knowledgeable. Gail graciously started sending me links to numerous on line workouts that she thought I might enjoy and that might be beneficial.
Gail of Boxing Princess 22. If you aren’t already following Gail and looking for some motivation and inspiration, you’ll want to add her to your list of follows!
My Step-Daughter, Tiffany, has her own fitness blog called You Are What You Eat Health. She features healthy eating, overall nutrition and fitness. Tif’s recommendation for a free workout website is Fitness Blender. I had the pleasure of doing my first video with her and my granddaughter.
Since we’ve been on quarantine, our gym is closed and obviously I’m unable to attend my Pound Fit Class and Aerial Yoga class. To see previous blog posts click here: Pound Fit and Aerial Yoga. As I was scrolling through various social media platforms, I happened to notice that the Pound Fit website was now offering on line videos for a free 30 day trial! WOO HOO! Perfect timing! I immediately went on line and ordered my own rip stix so that I could take the classes on line. The rip stix were delivered this past Saturday. I immediately signed up on line and literally changed clothes and did my first class! Words can’t express how excited I am to have this option at home! Where there’s a will there’s a way!
My hot, sweaty, no makeup thrilled to be able to Pound look!
4. On Line Classes
Psychology and the Good Life Yale’s beloved happiness class is now on the internet for free. Happiness, they say, is infectious. Perhaps that is why the most popular course ever to be taught at Yale University—this semester enrolling 1,200 students, or a quarter of the undergraduate student body—is one titled “Psychology and the Good Life.”
Until recently, I have to admit that the thought of taking an on line course was a little bit of the unknown and scary. On line courses didn’t exist when I did my undergraduate work or my master’s degree. A friend at work convinced me that I should take a course through Yale University because I would enjoy the topic and the content – “Happiness University”. Initially, she encouraged me to listen to the podcasts but I’m not good at doing anything when it’s only presented auditorily. I did sign up and am so grateful I did because I’ve loved the content. The course is titled: The Science of Well Being. My thought was that it would be great if I could assist those I work with to find greater happiness – both staff and students. I consider myself to be a happy person but wouldn’t it be great if as a result of the class I was even happier?! I’m happy to report that’s exactly what happened. The course is free although I paid a small fee so that I could receive a certificate stating I completed a course through Yale (LOL!); and I’m sure with a little searching there are other courses on line that are free. If there’s a will there’s a way! By the way, it was super easy taking the course on line; and I worried needlessly! My Yale University T-shirt is on order! LOL!
Since my cleaning ladies couldn’t come into my home and clean, I decided to give my downstairs a spring cleaning. I don’t usually get to my spring cleaning until I’m off for the summer. While it’s not the most fun thing to do, it does feel great when it’s finished and talk about a sense of accomplishment. I plan to tackle the upstairs some time soon. Additionally, I’m thinking now is a good time to tackle my closet. Again not a super fun thing to do, but feels great when it’s finished. Think about projects that you’ve been putting off. Now might be the time to take them on since we have the gift of extra time! Lori and her husband decided to do some painting to freshen up their house. It made me think that I might want to paint my front door in time for spring decorations!
6. Puzzles
Early in my marriage, Mr. FTF and I enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles. Over the years, that activity has fallen by the wayside. It always seems as though there are other things that need to be done. We have rediscovered our love of doing jigsaw puzzles. While we were enjoying our staycation, we completed a Thomas Kinkade Disney puzzle with Mickie and Minnie Mouse in a tropical location. It reminded us of our family Disney Cruise we took last summer. Working the puzzle together brought us lots of laughs! Puzzles are an activity that all ages can enjoy doing together.
We were bummed that we didn’t have another puzzle to start when we finished this one so we ordered another puzzle on Amazon. Since my husband is a musician, I knew he’d like this one!

6. Games
Games are fun activities for all ages that can be quick or go on for days like Monopoly. Lori and I used to play Backgammon and various card games for hours while in college. I really enjoy game playing put typically don’t have the time. Again the coronavirus has provided us with the gift of time! While planning our staycation, I figured it was a perfect time to pull them all out! They’re still out and I’m sure my Mom and I will be playing them more while staying put!

7. Read
Perhaps reading is an activity you already do often despite this quarantine. I love to read but my challenge is that I’m typically so tired that by the time I sit down to read I don’t get very far before I start falling asleep! Since we’ve been gifted extra time, I’m trying to build in reading every day as part of my routine and structure. I’m reading several books right now – one for enjoyment and one for work. The best part is staying awake and recalling what I’ve read! Winner Winner!

9. Meditation
Full disclosure, I have not YET started mediating but it is on my list of things to do while at home. There are so many benefits of mediating including it bringing you happiness. See #4 above!
Reduces Stress. Stress reduction is one of the most common reasons people try meditation.
Controls Anxiety. Less stress translates to less anxiety
Promotes Emotional Health
Enhances Self-Awareness
Lengthens Attention Span
May Reduce Age-Related Memory Loss
Can Generate Kindness
May Help Fight Addictions
Improves Sleep
Helps Control Pain
Can Decrease Blood Pressure
You Can Meditate Anywhere
Here are some apps that might help you form a meditation practice:
Hoodie and Leggings: Betsey Johnson from Stein Mart Adidas
While we’re spending most of our time in pjs, sweats and athleisure, it might be a good time to play dress up. While organizing your wardrobe you could shop your closet and be thinking about how you might wear something in a different way than you had been wearing it. You might want to consider pairing things differently than you have in the past. Pinterest might be a great source of additional inspiration. Many bloggers and influencers grab a picture as a point of inspiration and then put together their own look inspired by the picture. Since we have the gift of time, experimenting might be fun!
I totally appreciate this since I’m usually very fancy no matter what I’m doing…you know I prefer to be extra all the time! LOL!
It’s difficult to feel motivated to want to do your hair and makeup and get dressed up since we’re not going anywhere or seeing anyone. For me doing it occasionally throughout the week, feels good and lifts my spirits. It’s how I feel most myself and how I prefer to be seen on our work Zoom calls LOL! Perhaps pampering yourself with a DIY facial, manicure or pedicure will lift your spirits! Do those things that will make you feel better, fill you with joy and bring you enjoyment!
Our current situation won’t last forever! I am excited to see how things will be changed forever as a result and to see the good that will have come from a challenging and difficult situation. I’m not sure who’s quote this is but it’s been all over social media: “I think that when the dust settles, we will realize how very little we need, how very much we actually have and the true value of human connection.”

Part 2 of 2 on Monday
Come back on Monday for our monthly collaboration, to see how my fellow fashionable friends are sheltering in place around the world!
Do you ever find yourself wearing the same shirt or top with the same pair of pants over and over again? Breaking out of a fashion rut can be tricky if you don’t have a natural knack for style. FTF did a previous post with friend Lynn to pull items from her closet to pair with a couple of jackets that she claimed she had nothing to wear with them. Lori and I were able to help Lynn pull together three looks for each of her jackets.
When shopping, think about the items you already own and love and how you can pair them with a newly purchased item. Think about how you can dress an item up or down as well as how it can be styled for various activities such as work, casual, date night, lunch date with girlfriends…you get the idea.
The Pant
Level 99Jolie Utility Pant With Neon Zipper “Featuring a utility style silhouette with a jogger cuff, and a fun neon zipper. Dress them up for work with heels and a jacket, or go casual in a graphic tee and sneakers.”
FTF recently participated with Lisa of Evolving 50 at a styling event at Evereve. To see the post about that event, click here: Styling Event. I purchased these Level 99 Jolie joggers because of the fact that they were camo (although difficult to see) and had a neon zipper, which combines two current trends. Here’s how I styled them!
Look 1
Here I paired the joggers with a super soft Olive and Oak sweater along with a neon yellow belt I already owned and my Steve Madden wedges. I wore this look to an all day conference while in Portland, Oregon. Unless you’re the presenter, conference attendees in my profession are relatively casual. I could easily trade out my Steven Maddens for a pair of booties or even pumps to elevate the look. Anyone know where I can get some neon yellow pumps? LOL!

Look 2
In my closet, I already had this varsity sweater trimmed in neon yellow and black and these neon yellow faux-suede shoes. I wore this look to work since I was spending the day in a classroom. When eight grade girls genuinely compliment your look, you put that in your winning column!

Look 3
Graphic T-shirts are an easy go to for almost any look. This particular T-shirt had hints of neon yellow and a tiger so pattern mixing was an easy go to with the leopard print belt and booties. I added the black reversible moto jacket for some added warmth. I wore this look to an all day institute presentation. That evening I had a date night with Mr. FTF.
Tie dye, graphic tshirts, camo, neon, leopard print, pattern mixing all continues to trend. This tie dye hoodie was already in my closet. Pattern mixing, as I’ve shared before, is not my strong suit! However, I’m really pushing myself to reconsider things when it comes to fashion and styling. I really love how this tie dye and camo mix came together for a day of try ons with my mom. This casual look would be great for weekends, running errands, casual Friday at work and the list could go on and on. I’m not always very good with casual either so I can check two out of the boxes for myself! Do you ever push yourself to give new things a try? You might find out you like something more than you thought you would!
Being stuck at home with all of the stores being closed has prompted me to do some on line shopping…are you surprised?! Can you relate? I had seen this graphic T-shirt in the store before the quarantine and decided that it’s going to be super cute with these joggers. It’s on order and hasn’t arrived yet. I’m sure it will be similar to the other graphic T-shirt look I’ve already shared. It will also be cute with shorts and jeans – blue and black and white. You get the idea….how many ways can you style one item? The options are only limited by your styling creativity…go ahead and get creative and experiment especially while we’re all quarantined!
