Where to Find Wide Width Shoes

Do you have trouble finding them? Our BFF, Anna Basinski, asked Fashion Trends and Friends (FTF) to help her find black pointy toe pumps, with a 2-3 inch heel and in a wide width. When you need something specific like this your best bet is to let your fingers do the shopping! FTF checked out Nordstrom’s, Macy’s, and Zappos.com and found some great options! Check them out Anna Basinski and let us know what you think!

Hello my name is Cindy and I’m a scarf-aIolic

Yes, I have a bit of a scarf problem.  Does anyone really need 30+ of them in their wardrobe?  Probably not but that doesn’t stop me from adding more to my collection.

Scarves

A scarf is must-have for every season.    Even in the summer you can still wear a scarf around your neck.

I just bought this floral one from Cabi.    I thought this was a simple way to wear the stripes and floral trend that is out right now.

If you follow our blog you will remember I bought this great tassel scarf last week.

Scarves are a quick and comfortable solution to a boring outfit.  If you ever want dress up your plain white tee and jeans, throw on a colorful patterned scarf that will punctuate the white fabric of your shirt.  Plus, they are great to have if you know you’re going to be in a chilly setting, whether its outside, in a drafty building or on a plane.   I travel often for my job and a scarf is a staple as the planes are always too cold and it never fails that the person in the row in front of me has their vent on high and its blasting right on me.

While I love them, I sometimes have hard time figuring out different ways to wear/tie them.    I found a great video by Wendy’s Lookbook, that gives a solid step by step guide to 25 different ways to tie/wear a scarf.

So you know what I have all too many of.   How about you?

POLKA DOTS, BUTTERCUP YELLOW AND SNORKEL BLUE

My inspiration pieces…

Put them all together and here is my OOTD…

The shirt is from one of my all time favorite stores – Steinmart. Steinmart (https://www.steinmart.com/) offers a great selection of trendy, unique pieces that you most likely won’t find anywhere else especially the items in their boutique. The shoe and jewelry departments also won’t disappoint. Lastly, the price points are much less than more high-end stores.

I loved the mix of patterns and colors in the top. On this day, I paired it with black pants. However, I have also worn it with buttercup yellow pants. I like to wear a top or tank under my shirts to smooth out the look. This top is loose and flows nicely away from my mid-section. I’ve also had my polka dot pumps for some time. Don’t forget to look in your closet to give something you haven’t worn in a while new life! Plus it just might be trendy again! Don’t be afraid to mix patterns!

The sunglasses I actually purchased last summer for a family vacation to Disney World, but they lend themselves perfectly to my OOTD. The glasses are from a wonderful store in Geneva, IL. The Little Traveler (https://www.littletraveler.com/)

What’s A Vacation Without Shopping?

Shopping at Diesel and Lulu’s

Every season I anxiously await my visit to Diesel and Lulu’s on Cape Cod. This is one of my favorite shops on the Cape.  From the apparel, to the jewelry, to the fashion accessories everything is so stylish and affordable!   I love shopping here because its one of the few shops where you will find one of a kind items that you won’t find anywhere else on the Cape.

This season was no exception, I happened to be here over Mother’s Day and they were having a buy one, get one at 50% off sale!  The best thing was that you could mix and match items to customize the BOGO sale.  So it was time for some shopping!

I immediately was drawn to this light gray tunic top, with the gold/aqua necklace and the tassel gold strand.  I like how the jewelry took a tunic from simple to chic. I also a big fan of the layered jewelry trend this season.  What I didn’t think about was wearing gold and aqua with light gray.   I normally would have chosen a silver & aqua necklace to wear with the light gray top. I love how the gold & aqua pops with the gray and of course the aqua cross body bag completes the look.     I have a light gray tunic top at home, so I bought both necklaces and bag.

Next, I was obsessed with this aqua tunic.   So versatile.  I can wear it with Khaki, white or black pants for work.   But its also great with my jean leggings for a more casual look here on the Cape.  Unfortunately, its been cold here so I couldn’t wear it this week.  I will be bringing this top back with me for my girl’s getaway here in June!

Lastly…this tote had my name on it!   So fun and only $30!

So if you happen to be on Cape Cod, make sure to check out Diesel and Lulu’s in East Sandwich on 6A.

Now I just have to figure out how I’m going to get everything in my suitcase!

5 TIPS TO SLIM HEAVY CALVES AND ANKLES

heavy calves and ankles

Have you given up wearing dresses, capri pants and shorts because you don’t want anyone to see your calves and ankles?

You may not be able to change what mother nature gave you, but you can make them a lot less noticeable.

Here are our tips on the do’s and don’ts.  These opinions are just our own, of course you should wear whatever makes you comfortable.

So let’s start with what we believe you should avoid.

via GIPHY

Avoid ankle straps – Skip shoes that have lacing or straps that go around the ankle and opt for looks with no emphasis on the ankle area.

Avoid booties & flats  – You may love them, but they don’t love you.  Booties  & flats emphasize big calves and ankles. Instead,  choose a mid-height heel to fool the eye and make your legs look long and lean.  This is also a great tip for anyone who wants a longer, leaner look!

Tips to Slim Your Calves and Ankles

Choose the Right Shoe

  • Get high heels – The most flattering shoes have a heel or wedge that elongate the foot and gives your leg a slimmer look. Look for substantial heels — as opposed to spike or stilettos.
  • Go chunky – Chunky-heeled shoes are especially flattering because they balance out heavy cankles.
  • Slip on some Nude Shoes –  Opt for a monochromatic leg. Wear nude heels that match your skin tone to achieve the same effect.
  • Booties – Ok I know we just told you to avoid them.  If you are wanting to wear the trend we found that if you wear them with pants or a longer midi dress or skirt  it will minimize / hide the problem area.   See the below image on how this trend was styled on a couple of women with heavier calves, ankles.  We like these looks!

Switch to Long Pants

Pants are perfect for hiding “cankles” ( thick calves fused at thick ankles).  Your best bet is solid colored pants in a dark color but make sure they’re not too skinny. A tight pant will emphasize your problem. Bootcut or wide legs jeans help hide the problem. And no cropped pants and capris. They draw the eye to the widest part of your calves and ankles and make your legs look stubby.

Wear Full Skirts or Dresses

Choose a dress or skirt that flares out at the bottom. A fuller skirt will make legs look slimmer by comparison.

Make sure your dress hits at or above the knee. The shorter you are comfortable going, the slimmer your calves will look. Anything below the knee will draw attention to the widest part of your calves, creating a matronly look.

Other skirts or dresses for thick legs are maxi styles that fall to the floor, because they cover the problem area all together.

Direct Attention Up Top

If you don’t want people looking at your legs distract them. Wear dark colors below your waist and highlight your top half by wearing lighter colors near your face.

Restrict prints to your upper body, and use fun accessories like scarves or statement necklace to draw the eye up and away.  This is a great tip for anyone looking to draw the eye and attention up.

So while you may not be able to change the legs you have, you can make them less noticeable.

Mother’s Day Post

Mother's Day Fashion

We love our moms, Ruth, Kenlyn and Gene!  As mother’s day is just around the corner we wanted to honor and thank them for inspiring us to chase our dreams and for being our strongest supporters!  Our moms have influenced every aspect of our lives including fashion.

One of my strongest memories of my mom is her rolling my hair up in hard, pink, plastic curlers on Saturday night and then pulling them out ruthlessly on Sunday morning.  Whenever my sisters or I complained she would say, “You have to suffer to be beautiful!” In fairness to her, she had 4 children to get ready for 10:00 am mass 🙂 ….Lori about her mom, Ruth (pictured with her husband, Larry)

One of my fondest memories is watching my mom getting ready.  I enjoyed watching her go through her beauty routine. She even put on mascara, blush and lipstick despite being a stay at home mom with no plans for going anywhere during the day. (She didn’t even drive until I was three!)  My mom led by example…purses, hats, jewelry. If she felt my dad would be upset about her spending money, she would bring him with and put me in the outfit. He could never say no!  …Julie about her mom, Kenlyn (pictured in the pink sweater and pearls).

The biggest thing I can remember my mom telling me was, “you must always take your makeup off at night otherwise you’ll get wrinkles when your old!”  I also remember her response when I complained I had thick eyebrows, “there is nothing wrong with thick eyebrows, Brooke Shields has thick eyebrows and she’s a model!”.  It didn’t help at the time but when I think about it now I think she was telling me I was perfect just the way I am!….Cindy about her mom Gene (pictured in the swimsuit on the beach).

Happy Mother’s Day to our Fashionista Moms – We love you!

STRIPES AND FLORAL LOOKS FOR SPRING

floral and stripes

From the moment I saw this striped jacket and floral top, I was determined to put together a similar look for myself! I love the clean lines, colorful floral and pops of bright colors. It screams spring and the whole look just makes me smile! Cindy and I had the pleasure of having a shopping spree together in Phoenix over my spring break. I’m excited to say that we found a striped jacket and floral top at The Limited. You might think that horizontal lines add weight and make you appear bigger. However, that is a fashion myth. So don’t be afraid to try it. The floral blouse is loose fitting and floats away from my body, which helps to conceal my mid-section nicely.   Here is how I put the look together:

During my shopping spree with Cindy, I found some fantastic shoes that are pink floral lace up for a bargain at Nordstrom’s Outlet. I pulled a floral top out of my closet and am going to pair this combination with mint green skinny jeans (curvy fit of course) I recently purchased from Macy’s. Together with my striped jacket, I think I’ll have another great combination. All I need to do is accessorize to finish the look!

Chic Spring Graphic Tee Trend…how to wear this trend but still look age appropriate

Chic Spring Graphic Tee Trend

gray tee and pink jacket v2

The key to pulling off the graphic tee trend without reliving your college days can be a little tricky. Combining a graphic t-shirt with a classic jacket is an easy way to add a little edge to your favorite spring graphic tee and still look age appropriate.   You can dress it up or down.

As you can see, each of us chose a different jacket style in the spring trend color of rose quartz.   We’ve worn it with black pants, boyfriend jeans and silver pumps and even black shorts.

How To Wear Black and White All Spring

Black and White 3 Ways

The inspiration for this outfit came from this Pinterest pic.  I love anything black and white so this instantly appealed to me.  The print serves as a great neutral so you can pair it with almost anything. The narrow leg and ankle length allows you to show off a great pair of shoes that can really pull the outfit together!

Black checked pants pic

These pants are perfect for anyone with my body type (think chubby mid-section) because they are generous at the waist and narrow in the derriere and legs. They also have some stretch.  That being said, when I wear them with a tank and light weight sweater, I put on shape wear which helps to smooth everything out.  When I wear a jacket, I skip the shape wear because the jacket hides a million sins and provides structure.

Spring 2016 Pantone Colors: I really like to wear yellow whether it’s trendy or not so I’m especially happy that “Buttercup” is a spring trend color! I also like to wear gray so I’m additionally happy that “Lilac Gray” is also a spring trend color! Plus together they look terrific! Here is my OOTD featuring buttercup and lilac gray.
