CAN YOU WEAR WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY?

How To Wear White After Labor Day

Labor Day has come and gone. Have you put away all your white clothes yet, or are you wondering if you can wear white after Labor Day?

I was packing for a conference in Santa Barbara this week and found myself standing in front of my closet thinking….”I really would like to bring my white jeans with on the trip and try to get their full potential with the few months I have left to wear them.”  But then in the back of my mind I keep thinking about that old rule…..”you don’t wear white after Labor Day”.    So I spent the morning searching the internet, Pinterest, Instagram and there doesn’t seem to be any hard or fast rules right now.   I think you just want to be sure it looks intentional, and not like you forgot to put your summer clothes away.

Here’s my thoughts on it….

  • Put away white pants, dresses and tops made from thin, light materials like linen. You can still wear white in more year round fabrics like denim. For example, a gray, camel, black top or cardigan always looks great and white jeans can easily transition into fall.

Here is what I will be taking to the conference.   The white jeans are from the Cabi spring collection.   Because they are thicker fabric they are the perfect fabric that transitions to fall.  The open toe black booties are a brand called Matisse.   They are so comfortable!   They have a unbelievable selection of boots, booties.  I’m obsessed with this black and white color block pair from them.

Tip:  Did you know that boots and booties are all the rage for fall?

fallwhite

maltisse-color-block-bootie

  • Pair white or off white jeans with a t-shirt and fall poncho or sweater. Add some cool boots, booties or animal print flats and a fall bag and you’re good to go.   Note how the boots and scarf in the top far right photo make it a fall outfit in the below shot.

fall-white-outfits1

Another way is to add a fall accessory to your outfit

  • Add scarf or statement necklace.

Tip:  When wearing a higher neckline such as a turtleneck or a crewneck, a long pendant draws the eye down and towards the middle of the body, elongating the upper body and creating the illusion of that hourglass figure.

  • Soft or creamy whites make your outfit look more fall/winter like than stark white.
  • A winter white or cream with tan will anchor the look.
  • A white wool coat always looks stylish in fall/winter.

Plus Size Fashion

Good News – There are More Options!

The average American woman is a size 14 so why is it that so many stores only carry pieces up to a size 12?  If they do offer additional sizes why are they in some remote corner of the store?  The myth is “plus size women don’t shop”. What a load!

The good news is things are changing.  New designer, Melissa McCarthy, requires stores that carry her line, Seven7, to put her clothes in the same area as all the other lines – no putting Melissa in the corner! Target and ModCloth are two retailers that unveiled swim campaigns starring women of all sizes.  You can log on to ModCloth and see plus sizes fully integrated into the site.

US teens are changing the fashion world too.   They are purchasing less from the juniors section and significantly more in the plus size markets.   Some of FTF’s favorite places to shop for plus size clothing are below.

Attention to Details Makes an Outfit Look Complete

How to Make an Outfit Look Complete

Attention to Details

Friends often ask how I go about putting together an entire outfit.  My answer often varies.  However, what is always true is that I see an entire outfit from head to toe, which includes all of the smaller details!  At times, I start with a trendy piece that catches my attention.  Other times, I will see something that I feel speaks my name and evokes a strong emotion…think OMG!  I’ve got to have this!  Either way, I then begin to visualize and create a picture in my mind of what I think the whole outfit would/should look like.  At times, it comes together quickly and I can pull from things I already have in my closet and jewelry armoire.  Other times, I begin my hunt.  When a whole outfit comes together, I get a great sense of satisfaction!

Bare Shoulder Top

For example, take this outfit.  I started with wanting a bare shoulder top to wear this summer based on the current trend.  However, not all bare shoulder tops fit me right and the sleeves kept coming up each time I’d move, which defeats the look.    The top came from Maurice’s. I loved that the small straps are adjustable.  It’s loose flowing material downplays my large chest and midsection.

Patterned Shorts, Jewelry & Sandals

The rest of the details were pulled together to match the top.  The print on the shorts played off of the collar/band at the top of the shirt.  Not identical but similar…it struck me as tribal.  This necklace is in line with the current choker trend.  The earrings and bracelet were already part of my collection.  The ring and the necklace were both purchased at  Charming Charlie’s. I loved the trend of fringed, lace up sandals and let my fingers do the walking.  The sandals are from Amazon.

The Clutch

Lastly, the clutch was one of those items I mentioned earlier that screamed, “OMG!  I’ve got to have this!!!  It will complete the look!”  Clutches are also trendy at the moment. The fact that the clutch is brightly colored and bedazzled with beds and two tassels, another trend drew my eye immediately!  The clutch adds a nice pop of color to my outfit!  The other side of the clutch is actually black and cream similar to the shorts and top.  You can purchase the shorts and clutch at Dress Barn.

There you have it…the details can make all the difference in the entire, pulled together look of an outfit!

Clothes That Transition Into Fall

TRANSITION YOUR WARDROBE FROM SUMMER TO FALL

I can’t believe I’m saying this…. in a couple of weeks we officially say goodbye to summer.    I’m still wearing summer clothes for another month or so (Tucson summers seem to drag on right about now). Even so, I’ve already started thinking about how I can make the seasonal shift to fall with versatile pieces.

Of course, I’m also looking for a bargain. Lots of stores are reducing prices on their summer items.  Check out our Weekly Sales Alerts . The key is to find just the right piece that can transition to the next season.  The old rule about sales still applies: don’t buy something just because it’s on sale!

I’m having fun looking ahead and deciding on new pieces I want to incorporate with my basics.  Here are some transitional items I’ve been contemplating:

Scarves

If you follow our blog, you know that I love a scarf!  (If you missed the post click here) I like both of these from Shoptiques.  The neutral colors pair well with a wide range of shades. I love the warm tones and pattern of the one on the top. The one on the bottom is definitely a staple scarf! splendor-scarf-multicolor neutral scarf

Layer a light sweater or cardigan

These are classic cross-seasonal items. I need them now for overly air-conditioned offices, stores, and restaurants. In a couple of months this will be that necessary layer that lets me keep wearing lighter tops.   I think this floral cardigan from Nordstrom looks great with just about anything.  It comes in Regular & Petite and it’s on sale! (40% off)  Click here be taken to the site

Jeans in a new color

I have dark denims, so I’m toying with a color that crosses the season.   I really like these by NYDJ.  Perfect with summer tanks and fall jackets.  I think they would be great with ankle boots as well as sandals. Plus, they too are on sale right now at Nordstrom! Click here to be taken to siteNYDJ red jeans

Layering tops

I’m looking for more of a Fall-ish color and like the high-low styles.  Love this one from Macy’s.  It’s such a rich burgundy that can go through to winter as well.   It will look great under a blazer, cardigan and/or leather jacket.  They also have a number of other colors.  It’s on sale for $24.99!  Click here

burgundy top

Shoes that aren’t sandals

While I’m still able to wear sandals for a few more months, I will start transitioning to darker colors like tan, black and brown.  But I’m really looking for booties that don’t scream “winter”.  I found these  neutral booties (on sale!) from Nordstrom (they also come in black) Click Here

bootie tanSo that’s what I’m looking at right now.   What are you looking for in your wardrobe as the season starts to change?

Here are some more trans-seasonal items to browse.  Most are on sale!

Fashionable Friends – Meet Hilary!

FTF is as much about friends as it is about fashion.  So from time to time we are going to introduce you to some of our most fashionable friends and share their secrets to looking great!

Today, I’d like you to meet my dear friend, Hilary.  I met Hilary 20 years ago when we both lived in Baltimore.  She now resides in New Jersey, works in Manhattan while I call Chicago home.   We recently vacationed together and I was reminded of her great fashion sense.  Each day I looked forward to seeing what she would be wearing!

Hilary’s personal style demonstrates two good concepts.  The first is that you don’t need to go overboard with the season’s latest trends.  Buy a few things that you really love, look good on your body type and align with your personal taste.  Then mix them with the pieces you already own to create a great look.  This approach keeps you current without breaking the bank.  Hilary also knows how to mix and match pieces to create new outfits.  A great skill to have overall and especially when traveling.

The second thing Hilary does so well is accessorize.  She has a beautiful light weight bag.  It is perfect for carrying day trip necessities (bottle of water, scarf, sweater, and umbrella) or for toting a laptop to and from the office.  Hilary’s other daily accessories include a nice watch, sunglasses, cute belts and shoes, bracelets, pretty necklaces, rings, earrings and often scarfs.  She totally understands that accessories make the outfit!  Check out a few of the great looks she was sporting on our  trip!

Shopping Tips for Petites

Shopping Tips for Petites

Petite

An FTF friend and follower, Wendy, requested that we do a post on finding fashion for petites and especially petite pants.  Since petite is no where in my vocabulary, I’ve enlisted the assistance of all my “Pretty Petite” friends – Terese, Lynn and Annie, who are also FTF friends, followers and supporters.  I tried to get Wendy to be part of this post.  However, she’s requesting that FTF do a fashion makeover with her…that’s a post for another day!

Here’s what our “Pretty Petites” had to say about finding petite fashions and pants to fit:

Terese:

“I am a 5’4″ middle aged woman… I have difficulty shopping for pants at the box stores because they typically do not go small enough for my size except in juniors and I am NOT a junior…. I have had much success at Ann Taylor, Loft and Express. They have high quality clothing made for the modern woman and typically have awesome sales. My height is borderline petite.  I can go between regular and petite length. Sometimes the petite just fits better. When I have things that need to be altered, I take them to my cleaner lady who does a fabulous job with alterations.”

Lynn:

Lynn is 5’3″.  “Finding Petite pants has improved but still not great. Some of the nicer brands carry Petites (Chico’s, Boston Proper, Carson’s, Coldwater Creek (I think??), but in most cases they don’t carry the variety that a regular size has. Altering can be iffy depending on the style because most times so much has to be taken off that the shape of the pant doesn’t look right anymore and forget about any bedazzling at the bottom of slacks if they have to be altered. When I find a petite pair that fits and I really, really like them, I’ll buy more than one color BUT I wanted to do that with the Not My Mother’s Jeans and they didn’t stock any other colors (that are available in regular sizes).

Summer is good because I can wear cropped or capri and that solves the problem. This is also an issue with workout yoga pants – have to have these hemmed or I trip on them. For the most part, I won’t even look at pants that aren’t petite for fear of liking a pair and then can’t have them.  Long sleeve anything in a regular size is always too long on the arms.  I have permanent creases on all my jackets and tops from folding the arms up!”

Annie:

Annie is 5’3″.  “Hmmm… I so rarely get pants altered. I’d say all my pants in the past two years have all come from White House Black Market; and they didn’t need altering.”

Here are FTF’s Top 10 Recommended Shops for Petites:

1.  J. Crew:  They’ve takes the most popular styles and shortened the sleeves, torso and inseam to better fit smaller frames.  Recommended for woman 5′ – 5′ 4″.
2.  Express:  If you haven’t set foot inside an Express for year, give it a shot.  You may be surprised to see a plethora of petite skirts, trousers and tops under $100.00.
3.  Anthropologie:  Since Anthropologie was a pioneer in modern petite market in the U.S., you’ll find a wide ranging selection of ready-to-wear with form-fitting arm holes, higher knee breaks and tailored sleeves.
4.  American Eagle Outfitters:  Looking for distressed denim, boyfriend jeans or bell bottoms?  Head over to American Eagle Outfitters.  On-line there are options for shorter inseams under $50.
5.  Ann Taylor:  Ann Taylor’s petite line has been around for years.  It’s particularly useful when you need plus-size petite clothing since options go up to size 16P.
6.  Loft:  Loft isn’t all work and no play.  They carry faux leather leggings (that don’t look cheap), oversized sweater dresses and even scuba pencil skirts.
7.  Gap:  Gap isn’t just for basic petite tees and denim.  You can also find a wide variety of dresses, rompers, shorts, skirts, and jackets.
8.  The Limited:  When you need sheath dresses and suit blouses, The Limited is still a go-to.   But don’t overlook the outwear.  Often, an affordable motto jacket or swing coat is hanging just around the corner.
9.  Old Navy:  Walk three feet into an Old Navy store and you’ll likely bump into a petite plaid top or toggle coat.  They also have very reasonably priced workout clothes.  (No need to trip on your yoga pants Lynn!)
10. Talbots :  One of the best selection for petites.  Offers both Petite and Women’s Petite.

Threading!

Threading

Threading for eyebrows is widely practiced in India.  Indian women generally have their eyebrows done every three weeks.  Threading is also used for full face, upper lip, chin, sideburns and cheeks.

In threading, a thin (cotton or polyester) thread is doubled, then twisted. It is then rolled over areas of unwanted hair, plucking the hair at the follicle level. Unlike tweezing, where single hairs are pulled out one at a time, threading can remove short lines of hair.

Advantages cited for eyebrow threading, as opposed to eyebrow waxing, are that it provides more precise control in shaping eyebrows and is gentler on the skin and less painful.

My niece, Ashley, went to have her eyebrows groomed and was a bit startled when the stylist had a spool of thread in her hand.  She expected her brows to be waxed.  Ashley was hesitant but decided to give threading a try.  Once I saw how great her brows looked I wanted to try it too. During the procedure I felt a vibration like sensation and some discomfort but nothing like waxing.  My skin was pink for about 15 minutes afterward and then went back to normal.  Below is a video of me having my eyebrows threaded if you’d like to see the process.

Swimsuit Season…A Love Hate Relationship

I’m always super excited when we finally get some sunshine and warm weather to hit the pool or the beach! However, like many, I dread finding that perfect suit to conceal my problem areas and work miracles to suck, tuck and lift in all the right places. We were asked by one of our blog followers, Ashley, to give some tips on how to match the right suit to different body types.

1

2

Pear Shape: You’re curvy at the hips and thighs and smaller on top, like Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez.

What to look for: The key to the perfect swimsuit is balancing your proportions and getting the coverage you need for your bottom half.

  • For a traditional fix, look for a clean-skirted bottom that falls just below the largest part of the upper leg.
  • Avoid reaching for a boy short or thick-banded bottom. The extra fabric will only call attention to the area you’re trying to mask.
  • A plunging neckline or eye-catching top draws the eye upward, minimizing the bottom.

Large Bust: Ample cleavage; you’re chesty and require more support up top like Brooklyn Decker, Katy Perry, and Sofia Vergara.

What to look for: If you’re more well-endowed on top, then support is key. Opt for suits with underwire or molded cups to give the girls the support they need. Avoid ruffles or embellishments up top if you’re hoping to minimize the focus on your chest.

  • Bra-style tops with underwire and adjustable straps provide extra bust support. The thicker the strap, the more support.
  • Higher backs are also a good fit for helping to keep the girls up.
  • Molded cups provide extra support and are available in many different styles.
  • Explore suits marked with sizing like your regular bra, including styles that go above a D, which are constructed to support a larger bust.

Small Bust: Proportionally, you’re smaller on top with an A or B cup, like Kate Hudson.

What to look for: A smaller chest requires less support, so you can look for styles with more minimal coverage or embellished detailing, bows, and patterns to create the illusion of a larger chest.

  • Triangle tops create the illusion of curves, as do tops with bold prints or embellishments with ruffles.
  • Bra tops and padded push-up tops offer extra lift and can create cleavage, as can certain halter-tops.
  • A smaller bust always means you can wear tiny scoop tops or bandeaus — embrace them!

Athletic: You’re more straight up-and-down and have fewer curves, like Cameron Diaz, Jessica Biel, and Jennifer Aniston.

What to look for: The name of the game is playing up your curves with styles that flaunt your frame. Suits with less coverage help to create the illusion of a shapelier figure.

  • Monokinis create fabulous curves, as do one-pieces with slashes or strategically placed cutouts.
  • The smaller the swimsuit bottom, the fuller and curvier the derriere appears.
  • Tie-side bikini bottoms enhance curves and adjust perfectly to your size.

Tummy Concealing: You’re built a little more like an apple shape and carry your weight mostly in your middle.

What to look for: Whether you prefer to be covered up or you’re out to slim your middle, there are a number of one-piece and
two-piece suits, like high-waisted or tankini styles, that help to smooth out your middle.

  • Shirring works miracles. The gathered fabric hides bulges and creates definition in the waist.
  • A figure-flattering surplice-wrap silhouette trims the waist with its crossover fabric.
  • If you carry your weight in the lower part of your belly, try on a retro-inspired, high-waisted suit. They’re on-trend and ace for covering the abdomen.

Curvy: You’re curvy throughout with a full bust, hips, thighs, and butt like Christina Hendricks, Scarlett Johansson, and Kim Kardashian.

What to look for: For curvy frames, the key is to highlight your curves while providing enough support and coverage. If you’re not keen on exaggerating your curves, then steer clear of monokinis or string bikinis with thicker ties, which can accentuate your widest areas.

  • Asymmetrical suits draw the eye toward the neckline, highlighting the beautiful line from a woman’s neck to her collarbone.
  • Colorblocking can help highlight your shape, as do retro suits (think high waists and boxy halter tops).

red swminsuit

I have many of the issues listed above (large chested, curvy, large derriere, thick middle…a rather long laundry list) Therefore; I need a suit to accomplish many things! I was super excited on a recent shopping trip to find the perfect suit on my first try!  I immediately texted my success along to Cindy and Lori! Ironically, Lori owns the exact same suit! The reasons why I love the suit are as follows: it has ruching throughout the front to hide my midsection. It has a high back and built in bra with adjustable straps. I was slightly concerned that the skirted area would draw attention to my hips and thighs. However, I feel it has a slimming effect! I typically buy tankini’s but made an exception for this fantastic one piece!  This suit is by “Every Woman Has Her Own Profile”.  It also comes in red, royal blue and cobalt blue.

Lori and I decided to get brave and take pictures in our suits…two body types – one suit!

We had the pleasure of meeting Ann this past week during our annual “girl’s poolside chat”.  Ann was nice enough to take a picture of all of us while in the pool.  FTF thought Ann looked great and rocked her swimsuit!  Ann chose her swimsuit because she wanted something that would flatter her figure but provide a bit more coverage to the top of her legs.  She searched several popular retail websites .  Her swimsuit is from Kohl’s – Apt. 9.  Ann was lucky and found it on clearance.  Thanks for modeling for FTF Ann!  FTF feels your swimsuit compliments your body type perfectly!

Now is a good time to purchase a swimsuit as many will be on sale at this time of the year.  If you’ve followed our blog, you know my feelings about when to spend vs. when to look for good deals and spend less.  In my opinion, a swimsuit is a good item to spend a little more on since you’ll probably want to be able to wear it for at least a couple of seasons.  I try to have about three suits each season to rotate through…a new suit and a couple of suits from previous years.  Additionally, if a suit sucks, tucks and lifts in all the right places, it’s worth it’s price!
