The Fierce 50

The Fierce 50 Campaign

Fashion Trends and Friends is PROUD to be participating in the first annual #Fierce50 campaign! 50 woman bloggers in their 50s have joined together to collaborate, and support each other on the 50th day of the year – February 19th.   It is the intent of the campaign to show the world who we are and that the 50 we are experiencing is not the 50 we saw when we were growing up. It’s a powerful time in a woman’s life. It’s an amazing time of personal freedom, empowerment and strength. The Fierce 50 intend to wake up the brands and to let them know that we are the women with the capital in our pockets. We deserve their attention and respect. We encourage you to join us in our mission to change the world and a culture of women who genuinely care about one another and work together for the greater good!

FTF partnered with 7 Charming Sisters to bring you this post!  This is the last of our three part series.  In previous weeks, we featured Julie and Lori.  Here is what you need to know about 7 Charming Sisters:

SISTER COLLECTIONS

7 Charming Sisters is the brainchild of seven “work sisters” who’ve been colleagues for 10 to 15 years. The sisters are: Paula, the elegant Classy Chick, Kim, the vivacious Life of the Party, Jennifer, the dedicated Fashionista, Donalda, the flirtatious Social Butterfly, Jessica, the smart and Sexy Nerd,  Kimberly, the cute Girl Next Door and Melissa, the sporty Super Mom.   7Charming Sisters has a deep commitment to helping those with disabilities find jobs and employs disabled people in their studio. Many of their handmade pieces are handcrafted by those with intellectual disabilities who earn commission.

Which sister are you?  Take the quiz!

Cindy: the quiz identified me as MELISSA ~ Super Mom

“Clean, sharp, and stylish! If you’re into simplicity and neutral colors that will pair with any outfit, the Melissa line is for you.”

Thoughts: As Julie said, quiz was easy and fun.   (I love a quiz!)  I was actually surprised by the result and chuckled a bit.   I have no children, except for my 4 dogs.  LOL      But when you read how Melissa is described, it is totally me.   I too like my pick. Multitasker Necklace.  It’s on sale right now for $7.00!  I wore  it to work last week and got a bunch of compliments from folks who would otherwise not notice or mention my jewelry.

Here are some more of my favorites from the Melissa Collection:

No Day Off

Instant Replay

Go Hard or Go Home

Unmatched Elegance

Check out their Valentines Collection!  Currently they are running a 25% off using code LOVE!

Lori:  the quiz identified me as DONALDA The Social Butterfly

“Scoop up some jewelry that’s as playful as Donalda! You’ll love these bright, fun, glammed out looks that transition perfectly from day to night.”

Thoughts:   In parent teacher conferences, I was frequently described as “a pleasure to have in class.”  Today my day job is Director of Sales so for the quiz to describe me as a social butterfly hits the nail squarely on the head. I love color so the Donalda line has my name all over it.  Pictured is the Paint The Town Necklace   I will get a lot of wear out of it this summer!  It is on sale right now for $7.00!  How can you go wrong?

Here are some more of my favorites from the Donalda Collection:

“Affinity for Bling Necklace”

“For It’s a Jolly Good Necklace”

“Flirting with the Fall Necklace”

Julie: the quiz identified me as PAULA The Executive

“The Executive knows what she wants! If you know what you want and don’t want to compromise timeless looks for come and go trends, check out the ‘elegance with an edge’ look that is the Paula line.”
Thoughts:  The quiz was quick and easy!  I thought I would score and be identified as the “Fashionista”.  However, I do like the Paula line.  The nice thing is that you can of course order from any of the lines but it’s easy to head right to the one you most identified with and begin shopping.  The prices are great!  The choices are current and trendy!  The items ship free and if necessary, returns are free.  I was elated with my pick:  Classic Cashmere Necklace.  I’m sure you can guess why!

Here are some of my favorite pieces from the Paula Collection:

“Who’s the Boss Jewelry Set”“Black Diamonds Are Forever Necklace”

“Run This Town Bracelet”

Wearing Hats At Any Age

The Most Flattering Hat for Your Face Shape

I going to Cuba in April.  I was reading up on the weather and fashion trends as I prepare for my trip.   It appears that they have 80%+ humidity which is going to cause 10 bad hair days! I started thinking about my options…. I could get a Brazilian blow out.  I’ve had them in the past and love them.  (maybe another blog post specifically about that!)   Second option was to bring a few hats to wear.   Hats are a great to hide those bad hair day but also a nice fashion accessory.

Since I’m a huge fan of wearing hats, I decided that I would opt for bringing a couple of hats with me on my trip.    As I started looking through my summer hats, I realized how many winter hats I own but just don’t get the chance to wear anymore due to living in Tucson.

Since many parts of the country are in the thick of winter right now, I thought I would share some of my favorite winter hats with you.   (At least I got to wear them once this season!  LOL)

I know some of you thinking…. that’s great Cindy, but I can’t pull off wearing hats.   My answer is maybe or maybe not.    Maybe it’s just you have picked the wrong hat to suit your face shape?   So, below are tips on how to choose the perfect hat for your face shape.

Do you wear hats?  If so , what type(s) do you wear?   Send us a pic of you in your favorite hat!

“Pearls are Always Appropriate” Jackie Kennedy Onassis

My Introduction to Pearls

My FTF partners and I came of age in the early 80’s.  Preppy fashion was in and with that came pearls.  My mother gave me my first pearl necklace; a single strand princess length beauty.    I wore it almost everyday.  I paired it with buttoned down collared shirts, polo shirts with the collar popped, on top of crew neck sweaters and with my Calvin Klein jeans.  A love affair was born!

Versatility

Pearls never go out of style because they are so versatile.  Their varied lengths, strands and colors allow for so many different looks.   Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Audrey Hepburn and Princess Di are wearing different styles and yet all illustrate a classic look that is sophisticated, elegant and youthful at the same time!   Madonna on the other hand with her opera length strand of pearls mixed with other necklaces showcases an edgier 1980’s thrift-shop look.  Lauren Conrad and SJP look contemporary and modern by combining classic lengths and strands with fresh colors.  Then there are my girls and I.  Julie and I favoring classic multi-strand “statement” necklaces and Lynn who has so artfully layered and mixed multiple necklaces, styles and lengths.  The possibilities are endless!

2017’s 5 Biggest Fashion Trends

According to Elle Magazine, the following 5 Fashion Trends will be in for 2017:

  1. IN – Stripes:  This trend has been popular for at least two to three seasons and we’ll see it continued.
  2. IN – Sneakers:  Sneakers will continue to be extremely popular in the upcoming year, but don’t think your typical run of the mill sneakers.  Think glitter, leopard and satin, which will effortlessly dress up an outfit and give you reasons to buy multiples!  On a side note, thinking of FTF’s good friend Lynn…time to get rid of your “busha tennies” and upgrade!  We know you’ll love the leopard!
  3. IN – Artistically Inspired Fashion:  According to Elle, “there was an artistically inspired theme across the runways.”  Whether directly inspired by a particular artist’s work, painterly prints, or patterns, strong art references will be here to stay in 2017.
  4.   IN – Easy Elegance:  According to Elle, “there is a new attitude shift toward ‘easy elegance’ going into spring 2017.” The influence of athletic-inspired pieces will continue.
  5.  IN – The Mule:  I think I wore this trend in the early 90’s!  Do you remember it?  Flat mules, low block-heel mules, heeled mules, sneaker mules, espadrille mules—mules in all fabrications and colors including velvet, satin, canvas, and embroidery. They were big for 2016 and they will be even bigger for 2017.”SHOP THE TRENDS:

A Tribute To Wendi Mancini and Trifari Jewelry

A Tribute To A Fashionista & Trifari Jewelry

Back in Nov. Julie did a post on adding some pizzazz to your look by adding a brooch or pin.   If you missed that post you can read it here.   (In case you didn’t know, brooches and pins are having a moment this season)  With all the buzz right now about pins and brooches, it got me reminiscing about my days working for Trifari Jewelry and my boss/mentor, Wendi Mancini.

There is so much history to Trifari.   The mark Trifari made in the world of costume jewelry still echoes today.  They commissioned jewelry for Broadway plays, they had the first coast-to-coast advertising campaign for a costume jewelry manufacturer, they even won a lawsuit in 1955 that defines costume jewelry as works of art!

My boss at Trifari, Wendi Mancini, was the first wholesale jewelry saleswoman, Trifari historian and a True Fashionista!  She was also very active with Chicago chapter of  The Fashion Group International.    She introduced me the world of fashion.

My favorite line from Wendi “back in the day” was ….”you know you made it when you can afford a St John Knit”.   My days of working for her were filled with shopping trips on Michigan Ave and Oak St.  Mind you, I was in my 20’s and couldn’t afford a thing!  LOL

After Wendi retired, she became more involved, donating her time to raising funds for Hurricane Katrina and became involved with her church’s Rummage Sale managing the jewelry donations and jewelry dept. for the sale.   It was a way to connect her career with supporting her church.

Wendi had been a mentor of mine throughout the years and unfortunately passed away at this time last year.   I miss her dearly!

In memory of Wendi and my days at Trifari, I pulled out some of my vintage Trifari pins.   The pins with stones are all hand set using Swarovski crystal.

One of my fondest memories working at Trifari were the times we got to go to the factory in Providence RI and watch how the jewelry was made.  The process on how they hand set the stones into the pieces were my favorite.   The folks that handset these stones had a crazy way of making sure they got each stone set in the mold correctly.  They would cut out the bottom of a paper cup and looked through the hole of the cup to set the stones.   They told me that this process was the best at reducing the glare!

Over the years, Trifari had several ownership changes.  Trifari was purchased by Liz Claiborne in 2000. Now located in Puerto Rico, it brought an end to the high quality signed Trifari jewelry.

So with that, here are some of the favorite Trifari pins I own.

A pin or brooch is a simple and affordable way to make an older top, dress, coat or even a hat feel new.  I especially like to add several together on a denim jacket.  You can pick up a pin or brooch very inexpensively at a vintage shop, flea market or estate sale.   Anytime I wear one of my Trifari pins I’m stopped and complemented.  They just don’t make costume jewelry like this anymore and many of my Trifari pieces are now collectables!

HERE ARE 3 TIPS TO DETERMINE VALUE OF YOUR COSTUME JEWELRY

  • Look for a jewelry mark. Most high-quality costume jewelry will have the company name or stamp.

  • Do you see green? Check if it has a green residue or the finish is delaminating. If so, its value is probably low.
  • Look for clear detail. Inspect the back of the jewelry and look carefully at the design details. If it’s sloppy or running together, it most likely is cheap, but if it’s clean and it has clear detail to it, then the quality may be higher.

If you’re unsure, your best bet is to take your jewelry to a reputable expert who can assess its value and suggest options for selling it.

In closing, I have to say that  I couldn’t have asked for a better boss, friend and company to work for.  Here’s to Wendi & Trifari. And Wendi ….I hope you are looking down with a glass of chardonnay and smiling!

Eyelash Extensions

To Extend or Not to Extend That Was the Question…

After doing some research and talking with others, Lori, myself and Brittany, Lori’s niece/millennial fashion advisor to FTF, decided to EXTEND!

Upon arriving to our appointment, we completed a questionnaire.  Once in our individual rooms, we chose the lash style we desired.

fullsizerender-54

We each choose GORGEOUS!  However, it looks different on each of us.  (see below)

The process takes approximately an hour or more when first getting your full set.  Each individual lash get’s a synthetic lash attached.  Here is a brief video to see the process:

My Thoughts on Getting My Eyelash Extensions:

Not sure why I was nervous but I was for whatever reason.  I quickly realized that there was nothing to be nervous about. Courtney, my licensed esthetician, put me at ease and answered all of my questions.  I was concerned about falling asleep and snoring. Courtney informed me that it happens often.  Soft music plays in the room.  You can feel the work being done.  At times it tickled and at times it itched.  Your bottom lashes are taped down to keep them out of the way.  I had such a positive experience and love my lashes so much that I will definitely continue!  I think my results are AMAZING…see for yourself!  Don’t you agree?

LORI on Her Eyelash Extension Experience:

“I loved the experience.  The staff were very informative and very courteous.  The process, which took about an hour, was very relaxing. A pillow was provided for support under my knees and a blanket.  It was so relaxing that I fell asleep at one point. When I apply mascara to my extensions I am 100% in love with them!” When I go back I am going to ask if there is a way to get “thicker looking lashes”.  I am hoping for a look that will eliminate the need for mascara.  But make no mistake I am in love with these lashes!”

BRITTANY on Her Eyelash Extension Experience :

“The lashes turned out amazing! They look very “gorgeous” and make me feel beautiful.  A smoky eye with them even makes them look more defined.  So glad I had this experience!”

OTHER INTERESTING FACTS:

  • For an upgrade charge, you can get mink lashes instead of synthetic.
  • Lashes are available in the following colors:  black, red, green, blue and purple.  You can also get ombre lashes – black with the colored tips.
  • You should go back within two weeks to check if a fill is necessary.
  • After the two week check, it’s best to go monthly.
  • The age range of those getting lash extensions spans 14 years old – 70 years young with the average between 30’s and 40’s.
  • They recommend that you do not get the lashes wet or wear eye makeup for the first 48 hours after getting them.
  • If possible, you need to be careful on how you sleep and of course avoid rubbing your eyes immediately following.
  • You can go swimming both in a pool and in the ocean.  Ocean water might cause them to not last as long.

So what do you think?  To extend or not to extend that is the question!
